Ash bow from spliced stave: Thoughts on design?
Jim Davis:
I've made a lot of ash bows. Ash was one of the few bow woods available on my land in Maine.
Beba is spot on for the handle and limb length. To minimize set, I always made my pyramid bows at least 2" wide at the fade and around a half inch thick. I didn't heat treat in those days and always ended up with one or two inches of set. But "string follow" bows have a following and my bows shot well and lasted.
Ash is a disappearing species. Might as well use it before the emerald ash borers get it.
MattCav:
Thanks for the input everyone. I'm getting going, will update in a day or two with photos! I'll adjust to the 10" handle, but leave the length for now, till I get a good bend.
