Nice Black Locust Tree

(1/3) > >>

Will B:
My friend Jim (BlueJack) and I found this beautiful black locust tree on his farm here in PA. There were a number of them planted by his wife’s grandfather to use as fence posts on their farm. As luck would have it this one was never used for that purpose.
It was approximately 18” at the base with nice, thick growth rings. We were able to get three, six-foot logs and a total of 22 staves out of this tree. The staves were relatively knot-free and fairly straight with minimal twist. I’ve made a half dozen black locust selfbows and love the way they shoot. Thanks for looking and Merry Christmas!

Will B:
Nice truckload of black locust

Will B:
I used my drawknife to remove the bark and sapwood and sealed the ends and back with shellac.

Will B:
One down…. This is gonna take a few days to finish but it will be well worth the time and effort.

Pat B:
Nice haul of black locust. You may want to double up on sealing the back or keep a close eye on the staves you have remover the bark and sapwood. If they start to check seal the back more.
