ash stave profile

(1/4) > >>

bluejack:
I`ve been gifted an excellent ash stave from a friend (Will B) I`ve never tried ash before but laid out the profile as follows-66" ntn-13/4" wide at the fades-to 11/2" at midpoint to 1/2" tips. Do you fellows have any recommendations on this profile. Stave was cut in 2017-should be plenty well seasoned. How about fire hardening and adding reflex ??. Thanks in advance

Pat B:
Your dimensions sound good. Heat treating would improve the compression factor and adding reflex at the same time would be helpful. Don't try to add too much reflex. Maybe 3" or so should give you a finished bow with 1" of reflex or flat profile if you do your part.

Aksel:
Depends what draw weight and draw length you are aiming for. With 1 3/4 " at fades I wouldn´t shoot for much higher than #50-@ 28 to make sure to keep set low. But depends on your skills and if you mind taking the risk of messing up.

Think Badger mentions in TBB that Tim Baker calculates for a 65" straight bow with 2 inches wide limbs to safely be tillered to a draw weight corresponding to its specific gravity @ 28 inches drawlength. White ash is said to have .59 in tbb4 but of course that can vary... Reflex would put more strain on the design. Heat treating can help.

Mad Max:
68" NTN
2-1/2" wide at the fades, 5/16" at the nocks
Long slow heat treat

Pat B:
Very nice, Mark. I love the look of timber rattler skins on a bow and you made the string to match.  :OK
