for DIY, I wonder what could be done with small wood samples of a consistent length, width and thickness,  something like a xylophone key but all the same length.

Not sure how the sound of it is related to the speed of sound in the material, but there’s definitely something there! I appreciate the observation. At the very least we can all gather in a circle with our staves around a fire and chant “OOGA BOOGA” to the beautiful sound.  (=) )P(

thats why they use certain woods for baliphone or xylephone,, they have the best sound

If you drop say 6-8 staves of about the same size . You can tell the more dense staves also. Takes some practice. Best dropped on concrete.
