WhistlingBadger:
That is one beautiful goat!  Congratulations, and thanks for a great story.  I'll be eating my antelope tag this year, but that's mostly OK--got a freezer full of elk.

Yeah, it looks like you did ok

WhistlingBadger:
I just slowed down and reread your story, which was completely worth doing.  I am going to start using the expression "windy enough to suck a fart our of a dead chicken" at every opportunity.

Your hunt captures so much for what makes antelope hunting unlike anything else.  Going undetected is virtually impossible with their supernatural eyesight.  Your only hope is to keep a fold of land between you and them, which is mighty difficult because the land is flat and you're stalking a moving target, and/or fool them into thinking you aren't up to anything sinister, which isn't too hard if they haven't been pressured recently.  Throw in the magnificent desolation of the country they inhabit, the smell of sagebrush and goat musk, a few prickly pear spines in the knees, and the ever-present possibility of coming across a rattlesnake, and you've got a hunt like no other.

I'm glad you brought us along.  Excellent writing, sir!   :)

Years back I was doing a belly crawl across half a mile of alkali flat/cactus garden trying to get a shot on a nice buck with three does. I had detoured around a lot of prickly pear (mostly successful) and had been keeping sagebrush clumps between me and the prey. I was almost close enough to peek up when I felt a vibration under my groin. PRAIRIE RATTLER!!! I levitated straight up in the air with all four limbs pinwheeling like Sylvester the cat only to realize it was my phone in my pocket on vibrate. It was my buddy back at the vehicle calling to tell me that the goats had been gone for almost half an hour and he wanted to go back to town to get lunch.
