First try egg tanning

So I was able to AM to smoke my 3 hides. First smoke lasted a bit over 2hrs before I turned my skin "chimney" inside out. Second smoke was about an hour. Significant difference in color-I was surprised. How long do you all smoke your hides for? I have seen online everything from 25 min to 24hrs....Anyway, I was unhappy with the effects of the second smoke so I put a skin back over the fire just kinda laid across two pipes to keep it away from the heat. There was NO flame...I came back in 10 min to this :-[ >:(
Living and learning I guess. I want a more proper chimney system next time so the bottom skin is not so close to the heat. Do you all do it about the same as this? My wood was punky pine that I had to soak in water before putting it on the coals.

I use a long pipe on a small tent wood stove, you want cool smoke long pipe and I also sew a pant leg on to the necks as an extension to slide over pipe and never ever leave hide unattended way to much work to lose at this point :(

Yeah...as one of you guys say, make the most of what comes and least of what goes....hard lesson learned.
How long do you smoke for? Paul
Pappy:
I use a tent stove with long pipe also, usually I smoke them about 2 hours but as Bob said i stay with it adjusting the skin and watching the heat by feeling the pipe with my hands, if it is to hot to touch, it is to hot and will cook or scorch the hide, I also put small sticks inside the hide to keep it open and move them around so you don't get white spots where the sticks were in the hide.

I put the fire in front side of the stove, damper it down slow and add punk wood as needed. I use mainly oak punk wood , Just guessing but think pine might burn to hot even as punk wood. :-\
