faking the sapwood

(1/1)

radius:
Hi,

If i wanted to use a hickory backing strip over some other wood to make a bow, and I want to imitate the yew sapwood/heartwood contrast...can I dye the belly piece before hand?  Will the stain interfere with the epoxy in any way?  I know that during tillering all the stained wood from the very belly will come off, but i want to avoid having to stain it later, at the joint between the backing strip and the belly lam...

Bob Barnes:
I had the same idea and glued 1/4" hickory to a bulletwood slat...it's a nice contrast but the bulletwood is way darker than yew...it should be near indestructible though... :)  I have never tillered an ELB but I'm working on it now...

bootboy:
what is bulletwood?

medicinewheel:

bulletwood = beefwood = massaranduba

my neighbour works on an elb from hickory backed jatoba (=brazilian cherry) in my shop; looks very much like yew!
plus it seems to make a very good combo!!!
