Know your regulations!

JW_Halverson:
Two things I absolutely refuse to mess around with are turtles and bears. In both cases state laws vary radically from one state to another and you are guaranteed to get in trouble, and yet both are regularly permitted for hunting/collecting.

One of my favorite homemade turkey calls is from a little red eared slider shell I picked up in a dried up lakebed. I went back to that lakebed and picked up about two dozen of the same sized turtles and was gonna make up a bunch to sell at Rendezvous. I got in contact with a local call maker and told him about my plans and he sent me an email listing the regulations on several surrounding states regarding turtle parts. That flat out killed my passion for that project.

Then, in reading about how the federal govt has cracked down on bear poachers and illegal bear parts, I figured I really, really do not need to be screwing around in that bear trap.

Now I am reading about Canada's laws about Indigenous arts. A non-indigenous person cannot legally create indigenous art....but at what point is a visual representation indigenous, inspired by indigenous themes, independently arrived at outside of indigenous inspiration, or outright cultural appropriation? Now there's a rainbow of grey I will strictly avoid.

I lost all my animal parts and firearms in a boating accident  ;)       Years ago at work I found a dead animal in the back field.  I took certain parts of it and made a very cool looking necklace.  Then I thought maybe I should look up the legal ramifications and discovered my necklace was worth $100,000 to the government officials.  I took my necklace apart and tossed the parts into the woods.

Eric Krewson:
I made several turkey calls out of box turtle shells that I found long dead and bleached in the woods. I hunted with one for years before I found out the box turtle is an endangered species with stiff fines for using any body parts. The call sounds really good.

I understand the reasoning behind the laws; some jerk might kill a box turtle just for the shell

I will still hunt with it but only on private land with locked gates and no chance of running into a game warden.

I dont think I would have admitted that and posted a picture of it in a public forum man. Im certain game wardens look at this place in occasion.
