string makers wax
Pat B:
Eric, I have some that Chad Weaver gave me made the same as what you make. For those that don't know Chad he is a commercial string maker and sells string materials of all kinds.
JW_Halverson:
I just use straight beeswax. Am I missing out on something here?

Cutting it with something else makes it not a crumbly in colder weather.

Thanks everyone for the info. Sleek ,I will try turpentine. Chumash, I guess the sunflower oil would work like turpentine ? Pat, yes ,I'm using hardened pine pitch right off the tree. Eric,if I can't make this work, I'll try the toilet wax ring. JW, the straight wax just isn't sticky enough for me.
Mo_coon-catcher:
I’m like JW, I just use plain beeswax. I’ve never had an issue with cold weather, probably just since I use just enough to keep the bundle of strands together long enough to twist up a string. I use D97 and the dynema doesn’t seem to need the same level of protection as natural fiber and Dacron strings. So getting a good amount of wax to absorb into and cling to the string doesn’t seem to be as big of deal. The dynema is naturally water repelant and has good abrasion resistance. So the wax is mostly to keep the fibers together. Where as natural fiber strings will absorb moisture if not well coated in wax and Dacron is a much softer material that abraded easy so makes good use of the wax protection. So both make good use of the softer more bity wax mixes to be able to hold a bit more.
But on mixing the resin and beeswax. You may just have to get it hotter. Keep an eye on the temp, but you may have to get close to beeswax smoking point to really melt the resin. I had a lead bullet lube mix that was beeswax base with Molle grease. The grease melting point was a few degrees under the flash point of the wax. So to get a good mix the wax would start to smoke a little and you back off on the heat. Makes things more exciting.
