We just spent a few days in a lodge in Woburn Forest, England where we saw dozens of these little deer. I took this picture through the window of the lodge, where every morning we would see them just a few yards away. About a hundred years ago there was an escape of Chinese muntjac deer from Woburn Park into the surrounding forest. Since then they have spread over much of England and Wales and are moving into Scotland. They are now classed as an invasive species and in some parts they outnumber the native roe deer. The males stand about 20 inches high at the shoulder and weigh about 35 pounds or so. Despite their small stature they can run extremely fast and with very good stamina.

Makes a guy wonder, how do they taste? Cute little critters though.

They are certainly cute little things. Apparently they taste pretty much like other venison, their meat can be bought in the UK from specialist dealers.
The females can start to breed at just 7 months old and unlike the native red, roe and fallow deer they breed all year round. The males have short unbranched antlers and prominent canine teeth, which they use when fighting other males. They are steadily becoming more common, the first time I ever saw one was about twenty years ago but now I see them very regularly.

Cool looking little deer, to bad you can't bow hunt them to help control the numbers.  :)

Almost more like a goat. Pretty cool. Other than the invasive species part I guess.
