Lets do, Lost Lake for sept.
-
well ifn thts the one ya wanna do
lets see a pic and some general size description
and we'll see ifn we can do it ;D
-
A search on "lost lake arrowheads" in google turns up some reasonable pictures.
Some additional details per the Joel D. Justice and Overstreet books.
- is a member of the Thebes Cluster, which also includes the St. Charles and Calf Creek forms
- 8000 to 6000 BC
- medium to large sized corner-notched point
- broadly triangular, with edge curving inward (incurvate) to curving outward (excurvate)
- much shape variability due to resharpening
- 2" to 4" long,
- 1-1/4" to 2" wide
- materials include wyandotte chert, coastal plains chert, sonora flint and dover chert
- biconvex in pristine condition, but normally each face has just one edge (e.g. left edge) that is beveled resulting in an overall flat rhomboid cross section, and most beveled edges show a nice serration pattern
- Justice comments on a deep corner notch that usually curves in and up

Knapping season is pretty much done for me, may bust a few rocks this week while camping but
then its hunting season :) Besides another month and it'll be getting to damn cold here to knap outside.
-
im no where near good enough to actually plan out a point, but i'll watch with intrest you guys giving it a go!

I hope the Point of the Month keeps going. Seeing the different blades keeps me trying. Also if ya pick an easy enough one I might be able to chip one out. ;D
-
Rick, You can do a lost lake. i mean a fancy on with deep notches is Tough.
But there only 3'' long and if you remember the bolin bevel we did, you bevel a lost lake the same way. only difference in a bolin bevel and a lost lake is a lost lake is corner notched and a bolin bevel is side notched and most of your lost lake points have concave sides.

(http://Here's my first effort at a Lost Lake point. I broke the tang off on the first notch but went ahead and notched the other side and then glued it back on, more or less where it was. I was attempting to copy the lower right point on page 451 in Overstreet, 7th edition. Dimensions are 3 1/4 X 2 1/4 X 1/4. Made from a spall. Obsidian wouldn't be authentic, but it's what I have right now.[img])

Picture above, now. I wonder how I managed to post the pictures without the text.

Ok Jesse, You inspired me I'll get to work. No promises on how good it is. ;D
-
Like that point Newbow. I'm working on one, gonna be a challenge for me too.
-
I was gonna ask for pictures, but now I see what The point is suppose to look like. I will see what I can knockout and post results if they survive.
I am not real sure on all the different point styles. I have been mostly making points from my area lately. NC

Sounds like a good one to try.Just drove from the Flint Ridge to central Vermont.I dug out some rock and tools out of the truck and can't wait to get started. It's a little chilly for this Fla boy but mid 70's today so I will survive.

Jesse, I've got an authentic one where the edge is shaped like that, I'll try and post a picture of it if I can remember. :)
-
i've got some rock cooking, so i'll try and make oe when its done. need to make up some tools also.
-
I have a lot of trouble with these points. To make one right, the notches should be punched and I just can't seem to get the hang of it. >:(
Here's one of my real ones. I'll try and see if I can make one this weekend.

Here's another try; my first ever attempt to use chert. This is one of the spalls I got at the Keokuk quarry. Craig said it needed to be cooked, but I thought I'd try it raw. The piece was pretty flat except for a big bulb of percussion. I could hardly get a flake to go more than an inch and I didn't get it very thin (3/8"; about half of what it started at) which left me unable to drive the notches very far. I was afraid to try punching it. I've never had chert to work with before, but I think I'm gonna like it. Compared to obsidian, this stuff is tough as hell!

Nice try, newboy, it's a lot easier heat treating it.
-
So these points are only seratred once on each side?? Or is it only beveled once on each side??
-
They were only sharpened on one side of each face. It's a more efficient way of resharpening a blade.
The points you see that are steeply beveled, have been sharpened several times. A newly made Lost Lake would not show any beveling until it had been resharpened a couple times.
-
Ok I think I understand. I will see what I can knock out this weekend.
Thanks
-
Not much time fer knappin lately, but I did manage to peck out this 'un. It ain't very slick though. The rock had a big concrete like spot in it and my flakes just wouldn't run right.
I'll try again with a better rock.

Nice work guys. Those are some good looking points.
-
I broke 3 points today trying to corner notch them.
-
Still on vacation but pulled out a chunck of Burlington I nabbed at flint ridge. It was about as smooth as a red brick but knapped a little better.

i made a cool looking one outa some horse creek. pappy will post a pic tomarrow, also knapped something else.
Thats a good one shanon. next time your down at the bow rang i'll show you how to do those very deep notches without a punch.
Thats purdy bonepile.
-
I wasn't too happy with the first try, so I thought I'd give it another go. This time with some Knife river. My butt hole was puckered every time I'd hit that punch when I was notching it :o It all worked out...no super glue this time ;D
These are one of my favorite point types and HARD to get a good authentic one.
Jesse, I'll be down Oct. 8-10 I hope you can make it over. I'll take all the tips you want to offer. ;)
Yea Bonepile, that is pretty.

Nice work everyone!
Shannon you amaze me son! Where did you get that knife river? Cost way to much for me....$5 a lb :o
No knappin time for me. Got a very big plate right now and it is full.
-
thats very good shannon. your gettin real good.
-
Thank Ya'll ;D
Tim, I bought 3 pieces of that at a knapp-in. I gave about $4 a piece for it and destroyed one of them. For me, two out of three ain't bad! :D
-
Man, Shannon that is a BEAUTY!! Nice work
-
Yeah, Shannon! That's what I've been trying to do. What I actually did is below. Probably the last one for me for awhile. I'm getting my eye worked on next week. If I'm lucky I'll be okay again by the time the general deer season opens here in October.

You boys got some serious talent! Beautiful work all of you! ;)
-
Beautiful point, Jesse (not to mention the dagger!). That kind of work, from you and most of the other posters, gives an old beginner like me a degree of proficiency to aim at. Thank you all and keep posting!
-
Great point Jesse, Is that Horsecreek?
-
yes the rock is horse creek.
-
dude im gunna learn how to do that one of these days!
-
I gave this point to Craig Ferrell this summer. Mighta posted it here before. It's Joe Stephen's Burlington, highridge subspecies. Good stuff. PD

Better late than never? ;D
Went to the bodark knappin today and made some nice points.Never broke a thing,(got lucky) andyhow picked up a piece of raw tough a$$ texas that just about beat me up. had a big ole stack in the mid section and the point was just about a point. I live by no guts no glory when it comes to points,so I set her up a whacked it. The stack came off but you can see the trade off in the dip. My notches stalled out before I could get them deep enough,so I had to quit with it.

The point looks good, but I'm most impressed with your hands! I thought you worked fer a living ::) ;D
-

sorry i couldnt find the time to make this one this month.
havent really had time these last 2.5 weeks for any thing but my mom.
sad to say here husband past 2.5 weeks ago,so i have been busy being a good son and helping her out with anything and everything i can.
well theres always next month ;D
so what will next months be?
-
Someone mentioned a Turkey tail a few months back?
-
Turkey tail would be awsome!!! lets do it!
-
Shannon, I mentioned earlier about taking care of your hands. ;D
-
I know! I don't know how you and Tim do it ???
Seems like every time ya'll post a picture, the hand in the pic is waaay prettier than yer face ??? ;D
Here's a turkey tail I knocked out a little while back. I think I can do better. It'll just take me a few days to find the time.
Just fer reference...They're from the woodland period, mostly all percussion, usually thin and very little pressure work.
Somebody correct me on any of this if I'm wrong.

Great looking point! You should copy it over to the October point of the month as a reference.
