Soooo I went to the range to shoot my bow for the third time (I've already shot 60ish arrows out of it) and it splintered while drawing it back... There's no way this is salvageable, right? I'm just really upset about this haha.
-
I hate it when that happens :(........
-
Nah, she's R.I.P. Resting in Pieces.
Back to the drawing board. On the bright side, you get to make more wood shavings!
-
Ouch!!! :'(. I know exactly how you feel. 5 in a row :o yes 5!! >:( but we are sitting nice now 8). Keep going make another.

Also, you get to apply what you learned on this one to the next. (that kinda makes me feel better, so I thought it was worth a shot :) )

Yep, sometimes its trial and error until you find your sweet spot. ;D some of us get there quicker than others.. :o
-
Bummer dude.
Fortunately, bows DO grow on trees. You just have to whittle them out a bit.

Study that break very well so when you choose your next board stave you'll know what not to get. Looks to me, from what I can see, that it lifted a splinter along a grain line on the tension side of the bow.
Sorry for your disappointment but if you're gonna build wood bows you have to expect breaks. I went for my first 15 years or more without breaking a bow. Some badly bent but no breaks. A few years back though every bow I touched broke and these were all tree stave selfbows.
-
Yep, been there, done that.
Knowing you have lotsa company isn't much consolation, but the idea is to get back on the horse.
Will look for pics of your next ... in 1 piece.

Shithouse, at least it didn't explode!

Ouch, sorry about that, take Pat's advice and try and learn something from it,then cook some Brats. ;) :) :)

how clean is this splinter...just askin cause if its very clean ( no chunks of wood in it or a lot of debris) you might be able to just fill that thing with super glue and then take some linen or serving string and wrap it tight....then soak the string or linen with super glue...i got a red oak mollie that lifted a big splinter and it was repaired this same way...it still shoots 2 yrs later...no loss in performance. what have ya got to lose??
-
4dog, the splinter is about as clean as it gets! When I press it back down into the wood you can barely tell it's there... Wow this is really getting my hopes up haha does anyone else have any experience with doing something similar?? and 4dog would you recommend I back it after gluing it down and wrapping it? (what kind of glue should I use by the way??)?
-
I would chalk it up to experiance and build a new one,
-
sinew wrap might hold it,, worth a try,,,
-
the super glue may not be as strong as wood glue,,, if it was my bow,, I would use wood glue,,, then I would wrap with sinew,, I think the sinew shrinks more than some backings ,,, having a healing effect on the problem area,,, it wont be too pretty,, so a thin rawhide wrap over the sinew(when dry) can make it look a little better,, if it holds,, it will be fun to shoot and the patch soon forgotten,,,, I have repaired similar and worse issues using sinew,,, I have not tried the linen,,, it may be an option as well,,,I was like you,, I had a hard time giving up on a project,, so went to the bitter end on most,, some success,, some not,, but learned alot about repairs,, which comes in useful if making wood bows,,,
-
That's a bummer man. Keep at it. I had a bad record lately too. Trying new thing will some times will bring you to your knees. Can't wait to see your next one.
-
for that splinter use wood glue and maybe clamp it closed ...you have to start your wrap a bit before the splinter all the way to the end of it...may work may not...but what do you have to lose. good luck..and wear safety glasses when you do pull it ...just in case..lol...dont ask how i would know. ::)
-
If you can't fix it enough to shoot without breaking, cut off the long limb as far past the grip as you can. Put it up and put the broke limb in the fire, an offering to the gods of archery. After you have broken enough bows you can try splicing or making a takedown? Good luck. ;)
-
Well sometimes that's how it goes had a walnut bow do similar. All you can do is go make another lol
-
This primitive bow making would not be near as satisfying if the odd break didn't occur. Sorry for your loss and know you are one step closer. When it all works out how sweet it will be.
-
Dude i feel you, ive had 3 splinters, brakes, cracks in a row... Was able to save 1 of the 3 but 2 out of 3 aint exactly good odds but its worth it! Keep at it!
-
Hey, if you a`int break`n you a`int make`n.... it happens.
What wood is this? stave? board?
-
No use trying to fix that. Make an atlatl out of it.
