There was a member that frequented the old message board in the early 2000 by the name of Daniel Higginson, Daniel lives/lived in AR. Daniel’s username was Dano. I'm sure some of the older members here remember him, perhaps not fondly. I had worked out a trade with Dano, I sent him one of the heat-treated recurves I was making at the time in exchange for a couple Osage staves. I only got 1 stave from Dano, it was a bit on the short side but large enough for a couple bows and very clean so I didn’t complain. I made one bow from a belly split out of the stave but still had a piece left over which has been sitting in one of my wood storages for the last 20 years. A couple months ago I got the urge to make something with it and decided to make a copy of an Elm bow I made many years ago, which I don’t have anymore. This was the Elm bow I more or less copied http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,5611.15.html
This little Elm bow shot really good, as in fast, and I shot this one here a few times in my shop and it seems to shoot as good as that Elm bow. The dimensions of this bow are similar except it's 2" shorter with 1 ½” wide limbs instead of 1 5/8". There was quite the bend at one end which I removed and then steamed in some small recurves. No heat-treating done on the bow although I did use dry-heat to set the recurves and to even out the little reflex it did have. With the recurves it started out with about 4” of tip setback and ended up keep a couple inches
The specs are 55” N to N with 1 ½” wide limbs pulling 55# @ 28". Here are some pics
This is the stave before making heat corrections

Very clean bow and your usual beautiful tiller.
-
Very nice bow, Marc. I remember Dano but that was a long time ago.
-
I'll trade you a stave for a bow : )
-
Beauty Marc! Simple and complex at the same time. Really like it.
-
Beautiful bow, Marc. Jawge
-
Very nice bow and a great story!
-
Sweet bend and bow Marc.
Allyn beat me to it. I’m betting theirs a bunch of guys that would trade you a Osage stave for a bow. I know I would.

Always love seeing one of your bows. Great looking little bow, and again great tiller.
-
Stunning. I love seeing your work Marc. That tiller is hypnotic.
-
Perfection!
-
Thanks guys. Don't make a lot of bows anymore but been wanting to do something with this stave for awhile.
Got another bow I made last winter that has a story to it, I'll post it some day
-
Ah that's a teaser if I've ever heard one ;D
-
Beautiful bow Marc and great story, and yes I remember Dano, seen a lot come and go here over the years. :)

Awesome little bow. Doesn’t get any better than that. Good yo know it’s okay to save a stave for 20 years before using it. ;D
-
Like that one. Beautiful tiller, Marc.
-
Nice one Mark! A bit different than your usual.
-
that's really a stickbow. Congratulations for this fine piece of wood.
-
Nice work on that style of bow from a nice piece of osage.
-
Wow, what a beauty. The curve is just beautiful.
-
Very nice! I’m gonna attempt to steal your design.
-
Wow, what a beauty. The curve is just beautiful.
If anyone wants to look at what a well tillered bow looks like. Well you don’t have to look any further. Marc you really have perfected it.
Bjrogg
PS I was think I have a bow I made that looks almost exactly like that. Then I looked at a full draw picture and it’s not bad, but it’s not as good as Marc’s
-
Thanks guys
Yes quite a few people have disappeared over the years, I suspect for many making bows is just a passing fancy
Just a bit different Steve
I used a shallow D section for the main part of the working limb on this bow

I might be one of them. Only made occassional child's bows in the past few years.
Awesome little osage bow!!!
-
Good to see you again, Frank. :OK
-
Speaking of people missing. Don’t want to hi jack the thread. Anyone hear from Simson lately?
I had such a strong feeling a few days ago I almost started a thread to see.
Hope he’s doing well.

Yep. I haven't achieved perfection, but I think it looks a whole lot like that.
-
So good
no frills and fancies to distract you from pure beauty :OK
-
Once it gets nicer out I'll put a few more arrows through her
I have some gut string for serving tennis rackets I bought several years ago that I'd like to try and make a string with for this bow, I'd bought it when I had an interest in flight shooting. I just need to figure out how to go about doing it

Are you thinking about taking it to the salt flats?
-
Real nice! thanks for sharing. What's the width at the nocks if you dont mind me asking.
Mike
-
Nope, not going to the flats
The nocks are 1/2" wide at the shoulder
-
Thats a shame. If you decide you want it shot, I'd be happy to shoot it at the flats and send it back to you.

Not likely to be competitive since you would have to shoot it in then unlimited class and at 55# it probably wouldn't compete with the heavier bows that could shoot in the class
-
This is a sweet little bow. Nicely done.
-
I remember Dano. Saw him the last time maybe 14 years ago at Ojam and gave him a couple staves.
That's a fine bow there Sir and a good remembrance... :OK

That might not be the same Dano. I remember there was one guy who went by the name Dano that frequented the Leatherwall and Tradgang, not the same guy

Ah, with the same names I guess it got me confused... ???

Seems like there was another Dano who lived in Arizona who was an outstanding bow maker and all-round nice guy.
-
The Dano I'm talking about disappeared in the early 2000's, I think he kind of pissed off a few people when he did
-

Yep, that's the Dano I was talking about. He'd come up to Mojam, where I first met him, and hung out with Micky aka: Ferret.
-
a beauty of a bow Marc. The Dano that Paul and Eric are likely referring to was a MoJam regular the first few years. He was a character that we enjoyed visiting with a great deal as he was a talented bowyer as well. Seems like he also ran around with a short cigar most of the time. I don't think he was from Arkansas though, or I would see him at our state events.
-
Everything you make seems to have a special aura to it, Mr St-Louis. I can't express how cool I find this bow.
-
Congratulations Marc. That is a really nice bow. It’s simply beautiful and it’s profiles are awesome.
Thanks for sharing it with us.
