I built a 2x72 in belt grinder was wondering what grit belts do you all like to use.
-
Rob
I use 50 and 120 grit the most.
if you give anything that your gonna grind off the forge scale a 24 hour soak in white vinegar it'll greatly save on belts.
forge scale is HARD,

Thanks Kevin

And get a scotch Brite belt, 50 120 220 up to 320 or 400 then scothbrite, I really want a scotchbrite

What's also important is what the belt is made of. I prefer ceramic belts for metal. They cost more but they last longer. Aluminum oxide just wears out way to fast, especially on steel post heat treat.
-
I’ll second the ceramic belts, way better for working steel.

Has anyone tried the purple ceramic belts are they any different than the orange ones
-
Rob, will you post a pic of your homemade belt sander? I'd like to try to build one.
-
Pat I'll try started using my phone I'm still learning
-
Robbie I get my belts from Phoenix abrasives, they can give you info on the different belts, they are very helpful. I usually go through Greg Magnuson

Bubby do you have their phone number

I usually order from Trugrit out of Cali.
The Norton Blaze (orange) belts are usually my go to. I get the most life out of them. I tried many different belts when I first got started, but I can't recall which ones or how they held up simply because the orange worked so much better and I've stuck with them.
For handle materials and woodworking I use a blue belt that's aluminum oxide but I'd have to try to find a past order or browse Trugrit's site to figure out which brand.
