Title: Cross Plains, TX Get-Together-2
Post by: gstoneberg on June 27, 2011, 03:09:45 pm
Would like to invite the north/central Texas folks (actually anybody who wants to come :)) to another Cross Plains get-together July 8-10.  Again, this will be at our deer lease where the conditions are rustic but the fellowship is good.  We have 4 feeders going for hogs and if the wind is right there are 2 archery tree stand setups along with 2 portable pop-up blinds.  (I normally use a rifle on the pigs as I REALLY like wild pork. 8) but I will bring bows this time.)  The lease received an inch of rain last week which normally gets the hogs moving so hopefully we'll see more this time. Last time we primarily knapped, but perhaps this time we'll do some stump or distance shooting as well.  If anybody wants to work on a bow I would be happy to provide assistance.  We split the food and I saved a large roast from last time's boar to cook in the dutch oven for Saturday afternoon.  I should arrive at the lease about 6pm on Friday, July 8th and we'll finish up sometime after lunch on Sunday the 10th.  There is a flat area to pitch tents and the landowner has worked to kill the fire ants out of that spot.  Again, there's a shed with 2 bunk bed sets in it but it is a deer camp so the Hilton it aint.

Respond if you plan to come.  Thanks.

George

Too bad, it won't be the same without you.  Sterling is trying to make it.  Tell Diego that I'll hold out for a neck shot this time.  If the wind is good I'm gonna try with the selfbow and one of my stone points.  Once it gets dark, the NV comes out.

Lee, I posted a mock-up of an Anasazi style bow a while ago.  I used thread instead of sinew.  I've got several juniper staves that are fully dry just waiting to be converted into this type of bow...with real sinew this time.

Just a reminder to bring this to the front.  Dallas and surrounding area Primitive Archer folks, we're headed out to the deer lease near Cross Plains, TX this coming weekend for some bow shooting, flint knapping and hog hunting.  I plan to arrive around 5pm this Friday, the 8th and leave after lunch on Sunday.   Come join us if you can.  I know Patrick plans on getting a bunch of juniper staves this time as well.  I'm going to haft some flint points on my primitive arrows and try at least 1 sit for hogs with the self bow.  Will also have the night vision equipped rifle if you'd like to try that.

Would love to see y'all there.  PM me for directions if you're able to come.

George

We had a good time, it was HOT though!  I forgot to bring a point to haft on an arrow for the night's hunt.  Patrick had brought both heat treated and raw Texas flint.

I tried some raw and failed miserably.  I tried a treated spall and did better, but in the end I chipped a point out of a thin spall of treated and opened up the trade point slot on the arrow to get it to fit.

Then, pounded some sinew and ended up with this.

I was very anxious to introduce it to this boar, that came in to the blue feeder the previous evening.

I sat in the bow stand there.  Here's what it looks like from the tree.

But, I had no luck.  Moved to the blind after it got too dark to see to use the night vision scope but I didn't have any better luck there.  Sometimes they have my number.

Patrick did some exploring and came back to camp with these.  It's the second time he's found arrow shaft material, he sure knows what to look for.

We had a good time, no pork rode home with us but some arrow shafts did. ;D

That's practically in my back yard. I know work sounds like a broken record but dang ya'll seem to have a lot more time away from it than me :'(.

George, I put my batch of really thin shoots in the sun yesterday to see if they would check.  So far no cracks...so I'm leaving all the other shoots out in the weather today.  In a shady spot, just in case.

I'm pretty sure the shoots are dogwood (probably roughleaf).  I've looked at pictures of the leaves, bark, and berries of several native Texas plants but I'm still not sure.  I would post pictures but I forgot to bring my phone to work.

Paul, get yer butt down there as soon as you can.  I've purchased a slot on the deer lease and I'll try to be there twice a month.  No excuses...OK partner? ;D

As I look around the web at other plants, the shoots are looking more like some type of privet.  The berries give it away, I think.  I won't know for sure until the fall. :-\

Paul, I had waxed eloquent on life choices and stuff, but it was too stuffy so I deleted it.  It'll work for you to get out there and we'll have some fun.  Patrick's setting up a primitive camp site, I'm anxious to see what he does.  Let us know when you get some time and we'll be sure to be there.  It's hot enough now that it isn't as comfortable as it was before.  The company is always good though. ;)

Hmm privet you say?  Does that make a good arrow?

Privet makes excellent arrows!  So does dogwood.  Anything with a small pith and dense wood will work. :)

Good Looking Point Sir.... :)

Going to have to make it up there to one your your outings soon.
I'd sure love to learn a bit about knapping.

Still haven't had a chance to get my NVS setup on my AR and shooting yet but will have it ready by the end July.

Maybe I could come visit before deer season if you guys have another get together.

Best Regards,

-Gus
