I really like this challenge thing, makes one think outside of his normal "want to knapp" self. Lets start thinking about next months point, Lay down your ideas here and we'll all kinda figure out what's next, unless someone wants to just step up and demand" We are gonna make this ( ----------- ) this month". ;D
Lets hear um.

hand fluted clovis, any size or material

Don't matter to me...I like 'em all. I would like to see pictures of the different stages though: original spall or flake, preform, and final (front, back and side). Maybe a picture of the real thing? Also a picture of the tools used?.....OK...I'll stop now. ;D

Clovis! clovis! clovis! ;D
I learned how to make these points shortly after i started knappin. Once you understand the consept its simple.
I am sure there are utube vids on this.
I think the clovis point would be a nice one to do for June.
-
Oh God...not a CLOVIS!!! I've been trying to make one for an anthropology professor and have broken 3 or 4 in a row. But if ya'll wanna try it, I guess I'll give in!
We can always make bird points! YEah! Little tiny cute and fuzzy bird points! Oh, I just love those bird points! I just want to hold them and pet them and love them and caress them and sleep with them in my bed and feed them and give them water and talk to them......uh...ya'll aren't still reading this.....are you? :D
-
Billy, How bout clovis bird points? Does that make you happy? ;D
I'm in the same boat. I can get the first flute to work perty well, but that other one always gives me fits. Need to learn how to set that nipple, so I rekon I would vote for Clovis.
All percussion?Raw material? ABO? ;) (just had to ask). >:D
-
never made one so i need to give a few tries i guess.
-
I vote for Clovis,,,,,,anyway you can do it. :-*
-
Only ones I ever tried I busted trying to flute. I 'll dang sure try a nudder one tho. Got my Clovis vote for what it's worth.

so this is gonna be one of those "lets see how many points i can break" months. im in
billy, was wondering what your favorite type of point was ;D
-
I read the whole thing billy - kinda like one of them billboards that reads "does advertising work? just did" :D. Clovis works for me, anyway you can make it. I'm going to lean towards all abo but haven't gathered the billets yet..
-
Clovis sounds good to me, especially with it not touching one of those damned implement-of-the-Devil lever fluting jigs. :) I can get one every now and then, but I dive that second flute right through the middle of it most of the time.
-
You sound like me Steve. First flute worked kinda OK, second one did not :-X ::).

All this practicing going on here? Yall are gettin a head start on me...But I do have tomorrow.... ;D
-
It ain't all lost, Paul. Try again on the top half or just make a nice hunting point from it. If you start with one long enough, you could possibly try 3 or 4 times on the same point. ;)
-
or just send the pieces to billy for birds ;D
-
Cowboy, Those are some bad looking hands. I see a lot of old scars and enough new cuts that I figure you're a couple of quarts low on blood. Nice point, even if it did snap on you. Praise superglue.
-
Hey Jamie,
I don't know if I have a favorite point type. I like those Columbia River arrow points and Gunther barbed points with the long barbs, but I don't have a favorite.
-
Spent some time this weekend working on points. Here's a couple clovis types I knocked out. The larger one is made from Georgetown and the smaller one is heat treated Edwards chert. I used an elk antler billet for 95% of the knapping....and a copper pressure flaker for cheating...uh,...I mean trouble spots. ;D

I think they might be a little thick? I don't have any pictures of the side view of the originals.

Lookin good Patrick!

This was the first point that I tried to replicate. All the others were just triangular, something with an edge that may take game. I see after reviewing that I need to concave the base. If you look closely you may be able to see the number 1 and 2 on each side. They represent the order of the sides that I fluted. The first seemed good. The second I really made sure was WAY below center line hoping that it wouldn't snap but and the result is the small flute. Any other comments please let me know.

If I get the peroria in the mail I'll try this challange but I have tried with obsidian and broke them all (4-5) just made me respect the talent of old even more. Not that I'm ant good but you would think I would make at least one. If I ever do it will go in a case.
-
Well, at least ya got one made without it breakin Bill ;D. Looks like the challenge has already started ::).
-
Look perty good to me. Just need to study some pics to get the shape a lil closer.
yea Paul I rekon the game is on now, I guess we should announce it?
I worked down a piece of basalt tonight. Not sure if I like the stuff or not? ??? Got one good flute then miss hit the second one, and cussed. >:(
-
tim your talking about the south western basalt right, not the nasty connecticut stuff. do you know where to get the southwestern stuff, cause i really like that stuff.
-
Yea jamie, It was the sw stuff, I got ii from Pebblepimp over on PP,we did some trading at Osage knappin. He told me that there were truck loads of the stuff down there.
-
I think so Tim - kinda jumpin the gun a couple of days but everybody's really gettin fired up for this one, aughta be good ;D. I'll get a thread going here in a minute.
I'm still struggling with that second flute - did it three more times this am. Didn't break anything in half but just absolutley crushed the second one. Need to cool off and try again, darnit :D.
-
You guys are missing the beauty of an internet based point picture contest. No one's going to see the "second" flute. >:D
I may just stand a chance. ;D
