Here's my latest osage r/d selfbow. Started out with a typical bodark stave in February this year - amazing what a little heat and steam will do for ya :). She's 58" n/n and 60#'s @ 28" shoots sweet! Have been flinging those funny lookin arra's at misc birds and jackrabbit's with it last coupla days - no hit's ;D.
Finished off on the back with RyanO's crumpled up plastic sack dye dob job - I'm very happy with those results and will do it again, thanks Ryan. Did a little laminatin on the tips with diff colored woods I had laying around, Strunk style handle wrap, and eight coats true oil. Here she is.....

Nice bow Paul, I got some of that cactis too, looks like some chert on that wall ;D
-
Thanks Cromm and Dano! There's no chirt in that wall, just your typical everyday limestone - bet I could bop something out of though ;D.
Oh, I roasted the belly on this thing up to the recurves - seemed to add some zip to it's zing. Gonna try that more on future bows.
-
That's beautiful Paul! The full draw is perfect. I just love the looks of those curves. From the looks of the stave, you earned that one. Saw Filer
-
Thanks Shannon! It was fun to build - learned tons about heat and wood, now I'm going about it with a matter of fact kinda attitude - seems like a breeze :).
-
Danged Nice Bow Paul....you don't pump them out like Some do....but when they Come....they are worth waiting for!!! Nice Full Draw....I love it....and you don't have to worry about String Slap with that Brace Height ....do you!!!!

Dang It Son!, that baby looks sweet as a cow chewing sugar cane. :D When you get through slinging arrows and waring that thing out with dove, you can send it to me.
-
excellent as always
-
Thanks fallers ;D! Destructo, the reason I have it braced so high is these funky flu flu arra's i've been shootin at the birds - they seem to get ruffled quicker than regular fletches, I'll toner down come real critter huntin season :).
-
That is one sweet bow. Good job.

Really nice bow. I like the tortoise shelll effect on the back and your novel laminates on the tips. Your knappiing seems to be progressing also. Really liked those calf creeks. Wish I could notch that deeply. Have you tried the chert under the Nueces River bridge south of Campwood. Again, very nice bow.
-
Thanks again Mike, that paint pistol ain't exactly primitive but whaterver gittser done huh ;D. I'm gonna get a dove come hell or high water, have about two dozen shots in so far and got some ducken and diven out of em. Have realized that close don't count when your bird huntin with a bow :).

Yeah, I just caught a glimpse of this un for the first time...and had to take a good long closer look! ;D Sweet! All details from the tiller to the finish work look great! Paul, you ought to be proud of how that one turned out! ;)
-
SUPER! No doubt about it! I hope I can learn to make one that nice one day. Great job.
-
Cowboy, ya' done real good on this'n. At least you won't have to hunt big critters with that "ol' chicken snake" bow this fall. Good luck with them doves. David
-
Cowboy,
Killer piece. How does a person go about taking a crooked stave like that one was and gettin' it as straight as you did? I never have seen how to straighten a stave if its crooked left to right.
~~Papa Matt
-
i'm not really sure myself as i have never attempted this as of yet.
however i have read on here that to remove side to sdie bends to use moist heat.
tim
-
That ought to knock down a few doves. Very nice looking bow.
Tracy
-
Excellent tiller. That is beautiful bow. Jawge
-
Wow! Thanks ya'll ;D. It's a joy to shoot and a real thumper ;).
Papa Matt: What I generally do is rough out the bow, steam in the recurves and use dry heat (heat gun) to straighten out all the bends. Just eyeballl down the stave and start heating and straightening, usually wind up losing some of the recurve if thier's a bend in that area - if so I heat on the other recurve till it matches. Not sure that's the best way but it's working for me - think I'm going to start straightening before recurving though, would be easier.
-
Very nice recurve, cowboy!! I really like those tip overlays.I missed the article on that "crumpled bag finish".How do you do that? God Bless
-
Thanks Pete! And this is really simple :). Take a wall Mart sack or some such and tear off a small peice, kinda crumple it into a wad, then dip it into your dye, blob it onto a 2X4 or something to get off the drips and start dabbing it onto your bow back. Looks great..
-
Wow - I like the tiller on this one. Great jobs on the tips. And bookmarked for Aug Self BOM!
-
Thanks for the info on the finish job.I've got a HHB and a hickory bow in the works right now,and I don't want to leave them white.I'll have to give a try on one of these. God Bless
-
Thanks Don.
Not a problem Pete - good luck.
-
