Title: yew wood dry heat?
Post by: HighEagle on February 13, 2016, 12:19:29 pm
Can I use dry heat to slightly flip the tips or should I boil them? On yew 64" ttt,  1/2"w x 5/8" t  tapering back 12" to 1 1/2"w x 3/4"t  the bow is now pulling at this time 45.5# @ 22" Thanks Chuck

If they're thin enough dey heat will be fine, but I usually use steam or boil

if I'm tweaking parts on working areas (deflex reflex kinks or string alignment) I'll use steam then a little bit of dry heat. I usually don't bend recurves till late, the tips are thin enough that they bend like spaghetti and have very little spring back

Either or both, sometimes if you are getting spring back or band pulling out, then combining heat treating and heat bending together will help fix the bend in place.
I use steam for thick sections.

Maybe its just me? But I've found yew to need a bit more heat time to reduce spring back. It likes going back to where it came from and that's good trait in bow wood. Either steaming or dry heat.

I've used dry heat(with oil) for minnow adjustments with yew.  If you are going to use both steam and dry heat seal the back well with shellac. Shellac can handle the stream and will help prevent checking on the back.

Man 20min of steam and my first tip bent like a dream, My cull was a little more radical then I thought, May be close to a static tip will see how it all pans out. Thanks for the help Chuck
