Title: Squirrel shoot and rock run
Post by: jonathan creason on October 20, 2010, 04:08:17 pm
Hey NC guys (or anybody else for that matter), anybody up for a trip to Uwharrie to gather some rock and fire some arrows in the general direction of some squirrels?  Bryan and I were talking the other night about trying to do something after deer season goes out, since we don't care to get shot.  I'd like to go after duck season, but if January works best for everyone else I'll miss a day.

I would certainly be interested...what area of the Uwharries did you have in mind? I know of a decent squirrel area but the only rock I have found is a very dark and coarse ryholite that's not much good.

I don't have anywhere in particular in mind, I'm open to any ideas.  For me, the rock is the main priority so I'd like to go to an area that gives us the best possibility of finding some good stuff.  The squirrels are just a good excuse to carry the bows and hopefully have some gravy later.

Well, if ya'll are anything like me your calendar tends to fill up before you know it.  Might be a good idea to go ahead and lock down a date.  How's Feb. 5th look, besides cold?

Where about's is this spot?  I mean in general, don't expect you to share your honey hole with everyone.  Looks like we may need to concentrate more on hanging out and shooting at squirrels and such.  I also know that the Perkins Game Lands in Davie Co. is supposed to have a good small game population.

If no one offers up a piece of private property for a squirrel hunt/camping then a game land will be needed. That creates a problem if camping over night is in the plan since very few game lands allow camping, at least that I am aware of. However, in central NC at a remote little place is an area called Burkhead Game Lands. It is west of Ashboro off of Rt. 49. It is a section about 4-5 miles wide and 5-6 miles long. It allows camping anywhere within the game lands. I have done plenty of trips there in 18th century clothing and carrying black powder flintlocks. There are usually plenty of squirrels about, but like anything they can be hard to find sometimes. I believe the Birkhead Game Lands can be found by searching the web for directions. Two parking lots are available, one at the old Thurmond home site that is a good choice since it can be seen from the road. The other one is hidden from the road.

This is just a suggestion as to a location. I will plan on attending if this comes together on February 5th, 2011.

I believe I called it the Thurmond home site for parking and it is actually the Thornburg home site...sorry

Looks like a cool site, and would be fairly central if anybody was to come from the east.  I'm all for planning on camping, knapping, and hunting there.  All in favor.....

What are the regulations on camping, hunting, alcohol, firearms? You know, all the good stuff. ;D

Hey Nugget, you can camp anywhere on the Birkhead land except near the old home sites.  The rest of the Uwharries land is not a "Wilderness area" and camping is restricted to camp sites. Alcohol is prohibited on all game lands, so being discrete has always been the wiser choice  >:D. Guns are regulated by the hunting season, which is; as long as a game season is open for firearms on the game land then it's good to go. We have always hiked in a ways and camped. A 6-8 foot wide creek is not far from the Thornburg home site and squirrels are usually found along that creek.

To be honest as many acorns as I have seen this year, I would be willing to bet squirrels are scattered and well fed. Just the same, nothing wrong with trying. Wonder if anyone has some good squirrel dogs??

I have often wondered if the Birkhead area could be made into a "PRIMITIVE HUNTING ONLY AREA"....black powder and bows. It would be an excellent land for it.

What's everyone's preference here, camp Friday and hunt Sat., or hunt Sat. then camp that night?

I really, really hope we have a bit of a warming trend before then.  Geez it's cold now.  (yeah, I know this is really nothing compared to a lot of you up north, but here in NC we might as well be entering another ice age.)

I would like to join in too. It would be nice to meet some folks who like scarring animals with pointy sticks. I was in the Birkheads at the beginning of archery season and saw quite a few squirrels near the Thornburg entrance. A few rabbits also.

Well, the time is getting close.  I think Bryan and nclongbowman have found us a good spot to hunt and camp, and it sounds like we might have a dog to help us out, too.  When does everybody plan on getting there?  Does everyone want to hunt Sat. and then camp that night?  I figure with work and travel that may be easier for most, but if the majority prefers camping Fri. I'm down with that.  Everybody ok with fending for yourself for lunch and maybe doing a pot luck style supper and breakfast?

If the weather holds out, I will go Saturday morning. I broke my fibula bone last Monday taking down a ladder stand that fell backwards from the tree. Not the stands fault, it was an absent minded act on my part.

I am hoping to be able to at least get to the parking lot and spend the day. Even if no one stays overnight at least a day of knapping and shooting may be in order of fun. I was down there on Saturday of last week and the road into the lower (south) entrance was muddy at the bottom but no problem getting up to the parking area. The upper (north) parking lot is never a problem, but it is close to the main road.

We can try and get a yay or nay from everyone just before going.

suggestions; if you have some firewood, throw some pieces in your truck. ;D

If you know any interested folks give them a heads up!

I can bring a good bit of firewood.  Might be a good idea if another person or 2 brings a little with them, too, I'd hate to run out.

If you want to you can come over to the house Sat., and we can ride over together.  I think Marley will be coming along, but she'll hang out in the back seat.  As of yesterday the weather is supposed to be sunny and around 50, low around 30, which would be great!  I'll commit to a fritata for breakfast on Sunday, and I'll figure out something else to bring to eat Sat.

I'll see about egg aquisition for this shindig. I'll throw in a bear hind quarter and a jar or meat or two as well. FFYS Saturday breakfast/lunch and potluck saturday night and plan breakfast on sunday mornin?

TJ you still likely to be tied up with work? I might have to throw down some jalepeno poppers, but that's a lot of work in the field, especially with that many hungry fellers.

Looks like there may be some rain Sat. morning, but it's supposed to clear out by lunch time.  I'm still planning to be there with bells on.  Hopefully leaving the house early Sat. morning (you hear that, Justin?, no sleeping in), and getting there around day-break.  What's your preference on parking areas, upper or lower?

Nugget, I hate to hear it. It looks like rain possible on Saturday morning and clearing around noon. I am still mending but will go Saturday morning if not raining much. I will not stay the night. I believe Bryan is also going Saturday morning for the day if not raining. Just have to wait and see.

Good time was had by all that attended. The skirls stayed hidden, except one that hid in a tree that was holler.

A deer jumped but not seen, four GI Joes couple day hikers and a granola.

Again, fun was had by all TWO of us that showed lol.

sorry I missed it Justin.
I was sick as a dog and between that and the rain.. I didnt end up doing much.
glad you had fun on the outing..
Seems like the squirrels are kicking butt this year... I know they have been kicking mine..
I got a couple the other day when out with david and the PCP's but other than that...
they have been mean to me this year.

Allen and I got skunked the other weekend..
Ask him about missing a squirrel with a SHOTGUN (flinter) at 15 yards... while the squirrel sat still in the tree and flicked him off....

anyway. glad you all (two) had fun. sorry to have missed it.
