Title: Abo Heat treat and some points and blades
Post by: Sasquatch on March 21, 2017, 11:16:10 am
So i recently have been abo heating stone.  Ive had some good results and some bad.  I took some pics of the depth and layout of my stone.    This batch was  medium rough perdanales and other tx stone.  some of it was pretty course stuff.  I had a piece of sugary rootbeer in there but it blew up.  lay the corser stones in middle as that will get the hottest.  Cover to the rock to about 2 in in depth.  Build a fire with real logs if you can, stir the fire every now and then to make sure heating equally all around.  I usually spread fire into a circle after an hr or so. This will keep the heat towards the edges also.  5 hrs of fire and let it burn out. Wait 48 hrs then pull them up they still might be hott even then.

here are some abo heat treat and abo knapped heads.  nothing special juts getting back into abo.

Green is from a slab,  this is the first big slab ive produced. I dont know what material it is. It was a gift from a friend Jerry Hinkle

Very interesting Sasquatch, your sand doesn't look like it's very dry. I've been wanting to try this method on some really grainy tough local stuff. Thanks for posting. That Snyder belongs up top in the POM if it's not already and that green is real sweet

Nice work, the " Long Green" is quite a piece :KN.  looks like a neat fire ring, too. Unfortunately, I don't think I could make one in the backyard, and with the high fire danger we are having, a remote pit is out of the question😩  With the mavias gauche, I'm  Just about a few weeks from being able to start knapping, I think.  See the hand lady tomorrow for a session and prognosis.  Doc said don't rush it, though.  It hurts when I do that!  Don't do that😂👹. Got to put a few home made tools together to go along with the store bought stuff, right now, I'm getting ready to gather some shafts to get seasoning, and maybe trade.  Again, nice work.

That backlit one made with copper is my favorite. Nice chipping.

I have fire treated only one batch. I made sure the stones and the dirt were as dry as possible. My burn time and cooling time were about the same as yours. The best I can remember, none of mine blew up. Some were premium and a few still needed heat.

The long, green, thingy looks like Berns obsidian. I'd like to get some more of that.

Nice points!

I have only seen the green obsidian one time, and the guy selling it wanted a pretty penny for it ($10/lb).  Said that the site it came from was no longer accessible and so that was all he would ever be able to get.

I heard the site was still there but no one wanted to go into it. It is supposed to be a 30', hand dug pit with vertical walls with sharp obsidian sticking out everywhere.

Let me know when and where - I will bring the first aid kit and the suture set😂👹 >:D - and strong leather shirt, pants, and gloves.  I heard, read, or saw that the green obsidian was only found in Mexico, somewhere near Yucatan!  Apparently the Aztecs guarded the supply very carefully.  That green would make a great looking atlatl dart point!

Good job on the points and the heat treat.
I tried that, and added more wood to make sure it got hot enough. It got too hot and all the rock just crumbled into tiny pieces.
