Anyone heard of TOM BROWN? Well he said in one of his living with the earth books that he makes all his fletchings out of tail feathers. does anyone else do this? i have a pile and if they work good ill use them though i dont know.

About any feathers will work, Tail feathers arent as stiff as wing feathers and will lay down quicker when damp.... All the feather does is stabilize the arrow.

Here is a great option for tail feathers courtesy of Kowechobe.... http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,2180.0.html

I traded bob all mine ;D

They work well, quite well. I usually try to save mine for special arrow, unless they're aleady beat up. They really spruce a primitive arrow up :).
-
so they are good to use then. Thanks
-
They work pretty good, not quite as good as wing feathers but I use 'em when I've got 'em. They make great Eastern Woodland style two-feather fletches. I once met an old Cherokee bowyer near here who uses turkey tail feathers on most of his arrows with the two-feather fletch, they lay down flatter to the shaft in that style than wing feathers. I'd take most of what Tom Brown says with a grain or two of salt, too. :)

Uh I agree with Hillbily except I would take most of what Tom Brown says with A POUND of salt. .........bob

pound and a half ;D

...maybe a dump truck load.....
-
hell i'd just buy a salt mine,, thats about what your ganna pay for one of his classes anyway ;D
-
How about the Boneville Salt Flats. ;D STAN

Tried um,didn't like um so I don't use them anymore,I have plenty of wing feathers so I really have no need to.If that was all I had I would use them, and no never heard of Tom Brown and I guess
from what I am hearing I don't need to look him up. ;D ;D Got plenty of salt also. ;)

im guess im dumn when you say with salt does that mean what he says is true or no?
-
I wouldn't say that everything he says isn't true-he does have a pretty good general knowledge of the skills. Most people would say that he's more ......quite prone to exaggeration and embellishment. Just ask yourself what rings true and what doesn't in his (well, actually his ghost writer's) books and filter it through your common sense. Most of the info he gives is true enough, just don't swallow his stories hook line and sinker. There are plenty of people who are just as (or more) knowledgable who will teach you things without turning you upside down and shaking your life savings out of your pockets.

thank you. i have a few of his books and some seems a bit out there or i guess weird. i truly understand his respect for the earth and creator and all the organisms of the earth though.

Yep, I believe the world would be a better place if we thought as much of everything else as we do of ourselves.

Tail feathers work great. They're just not as durable as wing feathers. They are also great candidates for "stripping",which require no grinding, and they fletch great too. God Bless, PeteC
