Started my first static recurve a while back, only worked on it when the mood struck me which has been a good bit lately.
I caught a lot of flack from the so called experts on this site when I mentioned adding overlays or underlays to my static tips. You would have thought I said that Elvis was actually gay by the tone of the comments.
Never being one to fall into lockstep with conventional wisdom, I forged ahead. I am in the shoot in phase at this point and am really impressed with my statics performance.
Just a little teaser of what I consider a sexy static. I added a bunch of wood to the back and removed a bunch of wood from the belly to accentuate the bend of the curve, the tips are a little over 3/8" wide.
I put the first coat of Tru-oil on the handle and back this morning, holding off on the belly finish until the shoot in and final tillering adjustments are complete.

Looks good so far, can't imagine why anyone would give you flack for a method you choose to use.
-
Looks sexy as heck to me :-* Don't worry about the nay-sayers. Where would we be if everyone stayed inside the box?
Looking forward to more pics!

+1, looks sexy indeed. Can't wait to see the rest
-
Looks real nice. Question, did you put the overlays on after the static was bent (hard since it covers the bend) or did you bend them already on thereby bending the glue joint? In my mind, easier woodworking to add the extra meat on the belly side, but it looks so much nicer imho like you have done. Russ.
-
I was kinda' mystified myself Steve, one guy said only a rank amateur would consider what I had proposed. I haven't posted pictures of my bows here in years, perhaps he thought I was a beginner at bow making and needed some stern "guidance".
As for the overlays; I bent them on the same form as I bent the static on and added them after I bent the static, then filed away the excess wood to create the look you see in the picture.
-
Skillfully done. Look forward to seeing more.
-
From here it looks pretty good, can't wait to see more..............what are the woods?

Stern guidance has no place where fun is being had. Glad you went ahead with the project. Looks nice.

She looks very nice and sexy, Eric. You know, some folks do and some just have to find fault. The proof is in the pudding and your pudding looks pretty tasty. (that didn't sound quite right but you know what I mean) ;D
-
Who on earth advised against that? Are you sure they weren't just saying get the bow to prove itself before sprucing up the nocks too much? Kind of like maybe shooting a bow a bit before you consider it snakeskin worthy?
I must have missed that post where you were advised against it
Mind you because your overlays extend down the curve with a series of unsupported glue joints the potential is there for them to peel up if the curve starts to work in any way.
Adding some underlays to the curved portion would have actually been an even better idea. You just have to find an area to trim the fat for every extra bit you add.
Carson's Kingfisher bow shows that very well.
-
look's real nice Eric, I've put curly maple underlays with horn tip overlays I got no problem with it
-
The overlays are glued on with urac, bomb proof stuff. The thickness of the lower one is paper thin so I suspect it will flex with the bow.
-
That is one sexy lookin tip, Eric. I can't wait to see the whole thing!! :P
-
not so far outta the box as this!!
-
now thats a nock fer ya!!!!
-
looks very nice,, please post specs of how the bow shoots
-
I guess the tips look ok, Eric.. :)
-
All i can say is... WOW.... Im stealin this idea Bro!.... Brian
-
Interesting way to build that up, looks good to me!
-
Excellent looking craftsmanship and attention to detail on those tips…… How thick are they?
-
Eric, WELL DONE!!!
-
Awesome.
-
Great craftsmanship, and your thread title is totally appropriate!
-
Eric has been quiet, I wonder if it broke? :P
-
Tips look great ,looking forward to seeing the rest of the bow. :)
Pappy

Maybe he just can't stop shooting it. Looks awsome
-
Real nice, Eric. I don't see a problem unless the curves start opening up a lot on a Full draw, then again, that's some good glue. And I have noticed, there have been a few, new experts on here with videos on YouTube.
-
Looks AWESOME!
You should get no flack for that jack!
I'd say the only flack should be..." where the heck is the rest of it?!". cant wait to see it and all the details! Nice work indeed.

I am off to Briarfield for the Russ Dixon shoot this weekend to put the bow through it's paces. The handle leather goes on tomorrow, as I shoot it in I am having to lighten the top limb slightly little by little. I will post more pictures after the shoot this weekend.
-
Good luck at the shoot! I was going to go and bring the kids, but forgot about some family issues to attend. I'm sure that bow will handle the task nicely.
-
Nice looking curves Eric
-
A little update;
I came in third at Briarfield at with my new static.
A friend came over today and took the money shot with my new bow. Here it is as promised;

She's a real beauty, Eric. I love those curves and nocks. 8)
-
Good result & great bend!
-
The stats; 64" ntn, 54#@25", bottom limb one inch shorter than the top limb,1 1/4" wide, round belly limbs tapering at mid limb to about 3/8" tips, 2 1/2" fades. Gizmo tillered for the most part except for stiff limb tips and plenty of work getting the fades to bend.
-
Great bend.
-
Beautiful bow!
-
Beautiful bend right there.
-
Boy that turned out great Eric. Congrats on third place. Are you going to take some more pics of the finish and whatnot? I'd like to see some ;)
-
Very nice indeed. That right there is as good an advert for gizmo tillering as you are like to find.
Russ
-
You'll put yer eye out!! ; )
Nice bow, what woods did you use? Maybe I missed it.
-
The bow is osage, tips at layered osage/walnut/osage.
The finish is 5 coats of tru-oil followed by a couple of coats of satin spar urethane.
-
Not a thing wrong with that one, Eric, except it doesen't live at my house.
-
great looking bow Eric. Thanks for the update
-
