Title: Osage Bendy
Post by: RyanR on July 06, 2014, 09:42:19 pm
This is my first attemp at a bendy and it turned out well.  I was originally planning on making another flat bow with a rigid handle but the stave did not allow.  There wasnt enough handle thickness and limb width to get the results I had desired so I took advantage of the situation and changed my plans. I had also wanted to save some of the character of the antler on the overlays so I had to really plan that one out and be careful.  I had never shot one off the hand other than during building but, was surprised how well it shoots. It is really quick for a 42# bow.  It holds about 2" of reflex which probably helps with the speed.

Osage Orange
58" NTN
42# @ 27"
Whitetail deer overlays
Whitetail rawhide and red fox grip

Nice lines on that full draw..... believe your speed is in the stiff tips. Nice looking all around.

Wow!  That is a sharp looking bow.  Looks like it would make a nice hunting weapon.

Another great looking bow Ryan. The more of these bendy handle bows I see the more I'm beginning to like them. Love that full draw.

Great job man.  Did you use the same caul as you last one?  I really like this one.  Your tips look like they isn't anything there that doesn't need to be.   :)

What a nice looking bow !!

In a bendy, does the grip area maintain the same depth as the limbs on either side of it..  Or, is there a gradual thickening of the grip itself of
1/4" or so..

Good looking stick Ryan. Unbraced looks mean.

Thanks for all the comments.

Idaho Matt - That was a copy of the caul from the last one I built
Pat B. - The grip was slightly thicker than the limb, maybe 1/8 to 1/16". I also made it slightly narrower in the grip area so after putting on the rawhide it wouldn't be much wider than the limb.
P/D - That reflex is a testament to your caul design.
Blackhawk - It may see some Michigan whitetail action

That finished up real nice Ryan, I'd say you got the most out of that stick in that design. Grip, tips and bend all look great.  More bendys in your future?
