The winds from one of the hurricanes late last summer toppled some trees on one of the farms I hunt. Down in a hollow were some very straight tall sugar maples. I cut staves from a couple of them in February. I reduced this one to rough bow form on the table saw and hung in front of the heat/air vent in the basement. I got it out a few weeks ago and started working it on down.

I stained it with cherry stain, as it was simply too white to shoot when the sun was shining.. I really liked the maple look, but do plan to hunt with it this fall.

I drew a copperhead pattern and used black, brown and silver sharpies to blotch the pattern ( this before I added the cherry stain).

No hand shock, quiet, sweet bow... It did take almost two inches of set, I'm pleased with it regardless..
Any critique or suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm learning and having fun. I plan to be more diligent with sanding and final finishes as my skills and confidence increases. There are certainly tool marks, etc that I could have done a better job on, but was more interested in seeing if it would survive...

If you wanted to improve the tiller then you should have got the outer limbs working some more. The lowers bend is concerated near the fade and the upper is similar but not so concentrated.
Maple is yet another wood that benefits from trapping the back. Also heat treating turns it into something great that won't take 2 inches of set. Look at the posistion of the set - it is your teacher.

I tried heat treating, I guess I scraped the treatment away in final tillering. I also reflexed the tips which straightened quite a bit after shooting. As far as the location of the set, it appears to be all along both limbs not any one location. I did knock the corners off somewhat on the back making the belly wider than the back.
I've sealed the bow using tung oil, is there any benefit to heat treating a finished bow?

I really like the idea of the sharpie snakeskin pattern. Any pointers for how you did that? I am building a bow for the neighbor kid, I think he'd like that type of thing. I know I do!

Love hard maple, bud. Really nice bend ya got. A whole bunch better than my first bows for sure. well done!!!! PS: them aint tool marks, they are channels to disrupt the laminar flow on the vacuum side of the limb ::)

Congrats on only your 2nd bow with them kind of results.Pretty darn good in my book.Looks like you got the bug that'll make ya itch to make more bows.Glad the little crack on one of the limb tips worked out ok for ya too.
