Title: A white ash selfbow
Post by: snedeker on June 29, 2007, 03:19:40 pm
My first ash.  From stave, for 6'7" fellow with deep draw.  quarter-inch thick rings.  69" ntn, 62#/31".  1&7/8" wide from fades to mid limb then a stepped taper to 7/16" at nocks. Heat treated in 2" reflex, took on a bit of deflex after work in.  Walnut stain under tru oil, brown osage tip overlays.  I had to find a couple old really long aluminum arrows around to test it.  The rangy young lad to whom it will belong hasn't seen it yet - field archaeologist with our firm.  Sends a 540 grain arrow 210 yds.

If I was a white tail peering out from the woods at him working out with this this fall, i think there'd be a dark brown spot in my tawny little fur.

Dave

Nice job, your large friend will love it.  The drawing to the ear looks very English.  You can tell the wood has thick rings, only two of them show in the working limb and the one covers nearly the length of the limb.  I like having a three rings showing, it is a good way to tell how your taper is going.

I really pampered this one through, I think because of the challenge of the deep draw.  Started it when there was snow on the ground.  Excercised it a ridiculous amount during tillering.  Cut down the tree on a ridge top, Nittany Mountain.  I appreciate the appreciation.

How the heck I missed this fine bow from Dave, I'll never know.  I wasn't even in goof-off mode when he posted it.  Got your ash bow bookmarked for August Self BOM, now though, Dave.  Thanks for the heads up.
A reminder, folks, if you don't see something like "got your bow bookmarked" its a good bet I missed it.

That really is a good looking bow, and I'm really impressed that such a challenging bow turned out so well from ash. I've attempted two and they both were mediocre.

Thanks again.  I took my time with this one, hatcheted out the stave when there was still snow on the ground.
