You knappers amaze me. Im gonna get into this as I can. Isee alot of flint, chert, toilet, glass, ect. But what other materials-stones are knappable? Id like to hear all what kinds you guys have used, and like best. Kinda curious about jaspers, agates and other rocks of color too. Thanks, Auggie.

What can "I" knapp? Not much. :'(
Others can knapp any stone that flakes in stead of crumbling. I have a bunch of fancy Italian porcelain tile left from doing the floors in my house that works. I use it when I want to go hunting and be snooty. ;D Justin

Off the top of my head, I've tried: Many cherts (Ft. Payne, Knox, Dover, Flint River, Coastal Plains, Pedernales, Georgetown, Edwards Plateau, Flint Ridge, burlington, Belize, Horse Creek, onondaga, Boyles, cobden, etc.) Kentucky and Indiana hornstones, English flint, rhyolite, obsidian, dacite, basalt, silicified metasiltstone, quartz, quartzite, silicious limestone, argillite, coral, opal, opalized phosphate, agate, petrified wood, Mookite, jasper, Fenton glass, slag glass, beer bottles, forty-oz. malt liquor bottles, plate glass, TV tube glass, principal's-office-door glass, toilet tanks, porcelain sinks, coffee cups, ashtrays, plates/saucers, insulators off electric poles, ice, and probably other wierd stuff I can't remember. Out of all that, my favorites are probably hornstone, Flint River chert, Fort Payne chert, and good rhyolite.

Maybe I should asked what cant be knapped.Gonna get D C Waldorfs book and study up.Also wondered about cut slabs or pre forms ? Something for a novice or no?Any recomendations of a material -rock for a beginner to start knapping? Thanks for the input guys.
-
If you live where you can just go outside and pick decent rock up yer all set. Otherwise glass
and toilet tanks are free for the finding.
-
..........Hmm dont know about "thunder chert"(toilette tanks ! ) Its tough ta work fer a novice but guess it would be good fer practice. Maybe Auggie like Dana said glass er obsidian (volcanic glass ) Obs works easy but beware it will cut ya as soon as look at ya ! They will all cut ya but obsidian has a passion fer it ! :o ;D.....bob

If you knap quick. ;D Jolly Rancher candies also break with a semi-conchoidial fracture.
Auggie, Missouri is like the chert capital of the country, so you're in a good spot to be a knapper.
-
sometimes our math teacher gives us those big flat jolly ranchers >:D i dont think i can cut myself too bad with those

Pretty much what Steve listed except the Jolly Ranchers. Anybody know if there's knappable rock in Alberta? Got my marching orders this afternoon, leave on the 24 of Mar.
-
I generally knap anything I can lay my hands on and still looking for more ;D. Don't know about the clear candy, thought it was only good for lookin through :).
-
Paul, that's one of my favorite movies of all time. ;D Just be sure you're not looking through your rock candy so much that you get civilized and easy to sneak up on.
