I picked up some Osage staves from a fellow a few month back. They were his fathers and have been sitting in his garage for a while. They were more or less free so I started where his father had rough out a blank and never finished.
The back was left un protected and had deep checks in both belly and back. The end were sealed with no checking.
After getting to one good ring this 67" stave needed cut to 57" due very thin limbs. There was a sharp curve that was in the rite place to make it near center shot. After floor tillering I recurved the tips. As I finished the tillering it had a pin knot develop a small horizontal crack. I shot 100 arrows through it and it didn't get any worse but decide to wrap it with thread as a precaution. I added goat horn to the tips and some of my amateur art work to the belly.

It had some nice wiggles and twists so I left it natural.

Using carbons shows you just can't let got of that speed thing yet.
Where were from that's a disgrace not only to you, your selfbow but to all Osage bows.
If you had a buck in your truck killed with a self bow and a carbon arrow. You'd never even get a turned head. From me or any of my friends.
If you want to shoot carbons get a re curve or compound. There not made for self bows
Sorry shooting carbon arrows is not to primitive to me. I can just see a couple indain's setting around the camp fire flexing their arrows. Looking down their carbons getting ready for the next morning.

That looks to be some really old Osage...I really like all the profiles on that piece...Nice bend 8) and craftsmanship...Looks very efficient and fast...

Ok, it's really bothering me. I can't decide which rune system you are using-- it is clearly not the elder futhark, but it is close. I also can't make any sense out of the text. There are too many vowel in the second line--AAUT SOTT-- and the last 5 runes on the top might be a word for snow--but I just am not sure. Did you just choose runes at random, or did you try to write something--I think they look awesome, though. Runes always make a bow shoot straighter.

The runes were from goth similar to elder. I sign my bows as wicked snags which the one line is meant to spell.
The second line spells I believe aau (It's been a while since I looked all this up)which means ale or beer and appeared on a lot of weapon and such. It's followed by 3 victory rune and 2 t's which will bring victory in battle so they believed.
The spelling may not be exact as I'm 1500 years late to the party.
I use the runes for aiming as I like to shoot out to100 yards and need reference.
