Title: Mollegabet Style Hickory Bow
Post by: SDBurntStick on January 22, 2022, 02:46:15 pm
It has been a bit since I have posted but finally found some free time to work on another bow so thought I would share. This is another hickory bow with rabbit fur silencers and squirrel hide for the grip.  This was my first attempt at tanning a hide and thought I would try it out for a grip.  I stained the hide with some walnut stain I made.  The back of the bow and tips are stained with ebony and belly side with the walnut stain and I put a few coats of lindseed oil over that.  This was also my first attempt at a Mollegabet style bow and I really like how it shoots.  The stave had a pretty good hook in it and the ends had some deflex that I had to deal with.  I was able to heat bend some of it out but it still has some character.

Nicely done, layout and tiller. The hickory lends itself to a variety of stains and never loses the natural camo look. Again, nicely done.

Thank you.  I agree, it seems to take stain really well.  I made this one on the heavy side since it's so cold outside and in my garage this time of year.  I noticed my other hickory bows gained quite a bit of weight the colder it got out.  Curious to see how this one does when it's hot and humid this summer.

Beautiful work. Nice job not keeping the levers super massive. They could definitely be narrower for future bows. One thing to note is that wood in the outer half of the working limb isn’t doing as much work as it could be given the parallel width taper. So it could either be tapered or the tiller shape could be more elliptical. Either way it’s a minor nitpick and the bow is probably a screamer anyways.

Thank you and the critique is welcome as I am still learning at this.  I was a little nervous to thin the levers anymore but I plan to do a few more of these so I will have an opportunity to test the limits.

I really do like hickory simk and fortunately I have plenty.  Too bad it would probably cost a fortune to send a stave to you not to mention supply chain issues...lol

Very nice work on this bow too. That hickory loves heat treatment probably the most of all the bow woods.
Good to hear about another tanner on this site too.
