i was invited by a costumer to hunt on his gameranch for a african blackbuck and what they have to use is 15ft tall bow stands i have never shot off the ground before is it hard to compensate at that height i have a week to learn how to shoot from that height if i cant figure it out i will ask him if i can just shoot from the ground. if yall have any tips plz let me know i think the feeders are 15yrds from the stand ttyl

Just like shooting down hill . Pivot on the hips keeping your back and shoulders square maintaining your form.
Shoot on the high side of the lungs going in you gotta both of them. Stand on your roof and giver a whirl
It's actually fairly easy.Good luck on your quest.
Thanks Leroy

Good advice. My tendency is to shoot high from an elevated stand. Consequently, I always try to heart shoot the target from a high stand. My theory is that I tend to overdraw the bow when I'm shooting downhill because I don't bend from the waist very well. I can count on one hand the number of times I've undershot my quarry, but have many many times sent an arrow over their back.
Good luck,
George

If at all possible, get up in a stand and try it before you go!
I cant tell you if you need to aim high or low or dead on - I practice from both the ground and a stand, so its all kind of "instinctive" for me. But I can tell you that shooting straight down, I missed badly the first time I tried it. Took a half dozen arrows to get that dialed in.
When I get out early, I bring 1 or 2 field points and stump-shoot them as soon as I get strapped in.
And as stoker implies, remember that you are aiming for the heart inside the deer, so the spot you pick to hit needs to be higher on the body.
good luck, sounds like a fun hunt :)

Hey brother, I am no expert by any means on stand hunting. but can say that what I have learned concerning shooting deer from on high, is that they seem to duck the arrow more often than when hunting from the ground. Must be a response to the sound coming down on them. anyway happy hunting bro. let me know how you do.. Hawk

Well I am planning to do the hunt tomorrow or Friday if not It will be early next week wish me luck from what I figured out it's like shooting gar your target spot is lower then where you would normally hit and I know I can hit a gar from up high thanks again for all the info hope the next time you hear from me it will be smiles and lots of pics of my first game kill with my bow that's not a fish ;D ttyl

The steeper the angle the lower you have to aim. If your shooting straight down you need to try to shoot under them to actualy hit 'em in my experiance. @ 15 feet high 15 yards out it shouldnt be much of a issue. Maybe just shoot for the lower portion of the kill zone.

Talked to My costumer he is booked up till mid next week so I get a few extra days tp practice

Good luck on your hunt.
Thanks Leroy

If it really bothers them, just say you found a new way to put up Christmas lights.

I concur that most people tend to miss high from a stand but it's not because there is some gravatational reason for the arrow flying high. The arrow goes where you shoot it. If you follow the advice above of bending at the waist your form will be the same as on flat ground. If you don't use proper form then your draw changes. So, bend at the waist, hit anchor and most importantly - PICK A SPOT - and shoot that spot. More people miss deer from shoot at deer vs. a spot on the deer than any other reason. I've missed my fair share over the years and when I do I know what I've done. I try to pick my spot early and never let my eyes leave it until the shot is complete.

As everyone else said, you'll shoot high if you're not careful, especially if the critter you're shooting at is in close. I whiffed two arrows right over deer's backs a couple weeks ago, they were both almost under me. At fifteen yards I would have probably nailed both.
-
Good luck, and if you practice from the roof, and the neighbors look, and ask what the heck are you doing, just say, oh nothing, I just wanted to give the snakes a sporting chance. Oh, could stomp your foot, and shoo that big one over this way? ;) ::) Good luck, and I hope to hear, you are dining on Black Buck steaks, and back straps soon!

Will do he changed what I can kill now I get to choose. my selection is any doe "axis, whitetail,or black buck" or a white tail spike or deformed black buck male. So I get just one kill with that ;D and to top it off asmany hogs I want so I mite take a semiauto rifle after I try with my bow just incase a herd of hogs walk up and I am out of arrows. With a kill or not tomarow will be a great day it will be 29deg in the morning the feeder is 10 yards from the stand that's 15 ft off the ground.

well i am all pact up and have the jitters with excitement :). its going to be a long nite of waiting lol

Good luck, Sterling. Aim small, miss small!!! 8)
Pick a spot on the deer and shoot it, not at the deer. ;)

Thanx all well I am heading out it's 4:48 am TTY in a few hours ;)

My dad shot a cull buck and I got nothing we had to leave at 10 to go on a service call. I plan to be on stand again around 3 I saw lots of deer but nothing I could shoot. There was two nice does but they stayed out of range behind the trees

Hopefully this afternoon will bring better chances. Good luck.

I understand. Once deer season is over, if you feel like a road trip my lease is south of Abilene. I'm always looking for company on hog hunts. Gotta shoot at night, though we put lights on the feeders. Good luck with your deer hunting.
