This is one of my favorite projects I've taken on. This was one of those 'surprise' staves. It wasn't until I chased the ring that I saw the snakiness and character it had. Ever since Carson Brown made his 'Kingfisher' bow years ago I've bee wanting to try my hand at the Grumley brushnocks. For the brush nocks I used pacific yew heartwood and over(under?)laid them with Dall sheep horn. The tip overlays are deer antler. For fun I scooped out the fades to add a hollow effect though the limbs themselves are flat aside from a spot here or there where I dished out the belly a bit to follow a hump on the back. The dark look of the fades was achieved with a quick pass from a blowtorch which darkens the earlywood. Carson recently hooked me up with a stingray skin to try out and this felt like the perfect opportunity to use it. That stuff is amazing, both in how it looks and feels. I'll definitely use it again.

beautiful, ,congrats,, :)
-
Can’t say it any better. It’s just beautiful.
-
Real craftsmanship. To turn a stave like that into a work of art speaks volumes. A bowyer's bowyer.
-
Incredible, Weylan. I think you've found your NC groove. :OK
-
Beautiful, but why? Unless you have a five figure commission, you must be crazy to spend so much time to make such a beautiful object. Do you think you are an artist or something? If not, stop making things too pretty to be used, please. ;) It's about time for you to get an agent.

It's not often that i'm impressed.....but I am now :)
Super nice bow :)
-
Nice curves in every aspect :BB

Man Weylin, that piece of wood really did some talking to you. it screamed to stick out from the crowd and brother does it. I study your videos more than any others and now you show how you have taken it up to another level. crazy awesome work. now people will be wanting you to make them one. And I am just trying to make a good shotting bow for hunting. Cloud 9 stuff! :BB

Beautiful bow Weylin, but I think I'd be most excited about not having to pick all the brush out of my bow while hunting, and not getting snagged so often. Can you tell any difference in how it shoots with a litte extra weight out on the tips?
-
Very nice Waylin.
-
Rays, skate and shark skin is all great stuff. The bridges look solid. Good to use sheep horn and not deer type horn. I like it a bunch.

Wow, what I can't understand is how you can bare to part with your creations?

Wow, thank you for all the positive feedback! I'm glad you like it.

Thank you! I need to make one of these for myself. I hate getting brush stuck in my bow when I'm hunting. I was worried about the weight affecting the shooting but it really didn't, at east not in a noticable way. There was very little handshock and it felt just as quick as a bow without them. I worked hard to make them as slim and trim as I could, I think that might have helped some in that regard.

It's gotten easier. This one was especially easy because the snake set this up with an offset arrow pass that's perfect for a righty. I'm a lefty so it was easy not to get too attached.

In the Jungle hunting hogs I just use to take old round soft brown cork bobbers and just pull em tight into string. When I get to a good Guava thicket with sign just pull em out. Those bridges are nice what glue you use on them?

Masterful!

Beautiful bow! The handle wrap and brush nocks look Awesome! Another great bow!

There is nothing I can add that others have not said. You make this craft a true art form.
-
You really set the bar with this one. My mind is just blown.
-
Good to know Weylin, I will add this style to the bucket list.
-

I've done similar but cut the bits of cork to fit a bit better and then stuck them in place temporarily with double sided tape.

That sounds like a good solution. I might try that on on my hunting bow. I glued these on with gel CA glue

We need to add a drool emoji. That is just ridiculous! It's like watching John McEnroe (minus the tantrums of course) or listening to Bob Wier and Jerry Garcia in the late 70's...awe inspiring artistry that gives me something to aim for and dream about being able to maybe come close to pulling off one day. Dynamic, pure art. Dammit!

Work of art Weylin, beautiful work on a challenging stave. :)

That looks like Indian Ocean Ray skin? There are so many types hard to say. I do like them but hard to get for a decent price. They feel good under hend I bet.

Beautiful, every last piece.

G'day Weylin,
This is a nice bow. Great to see something well made that is not the regular out of the box so to speak. Well done! (SH) :G (-_) :-D
-
Awesome bow. When its not being shot it should be hanging in an art gallery, for all to appreciate its beauty.
