here's my latest bow. i mentioned it in the mass formula thread before. it's 65" ttt and 64" ntn, draws #46@27" and shoots a 10gr/# arrow slightly over 150fps. she weighs a little less than 18 ounces. the silk backing is painted with a modoc inspired design. she'll also get a raw-hide handle wrap, when i get to it ;D
the outer third of the upper limb looks a little stiff, which it didn't a few days ago so i'm not sure why that is. oh, and she's very pleasant to shoot.

here are some details of the tip (a bamboo sliver wrapped with hemp) and the scorched belly.
and of course the hero-shot ;D

Great looking weapon, Marius. I like the diagonal handle, and the paint job looks good, too. Is hickory wood hard to find in Germany?
-
thanks hillbilly. it's available as lumber, but not easy to find. i usually get it from a stave dealer (almost sounds like something illegal) ;D
-
That handle is definitely cool. I like it a lot. The color scheme is pretty cool too. Justin
-
Marius, he doesn't hang out on street corners with a bunch of hickory boards and osage billets hanging from the inside of his long trench coat, does he? ;D
-
thanks justin, but the handle is not my invention. i once bought a roughed out stave from michele bombardier, a local bowyer and that stave had a handle like that. i liked it so much that i've built it into this stave as well. very spine-tolerant ;D
hillbilly, you must have been to germany before ;D
-
I doubt any of us actually invented most of the stuff we do. At best we may have re-invented it. Justin
-
Nice Marius the handle design is something new to me, the paint is awesome.
I'll rest easier knowing hero's such as you are at large ;D
DanaM
-
Excellent bow Marius. I like every thing about it, especially the handle. Tiller looks good but the top limb looks a bit stiff. I really like hickory! Control the moisture, or manage it, and it is an excellent bow wood.
Pat
-
dana, i wish my shooting skills were those of a hero, 'cause the way i shoot right now i couldn't deffend diddly-squat ;D
thanks pat, i appreciate it.
the tiller is a puzzle to me. on these pics it looks right (at least to me) ;D
i wonder if the silk backing did it. these pictures were taken before the backing.

WOW ! love that color scheme . How does the handle feel to you when shooting. Does it alleviate some of the archers paradox problem a bit? Looks pretty cool.
-
rudderbows, it feels normal, really. the spine tolerance is great though. i shot arrows with 20 or more pounds difference in spine (but same weight) and they all hit in the same place.
-
It's look really cool! :o :o
And she is a fine shooter 8)
-
andrew, what do you say about the upper limb? it didn't look like that when i was at your place. the more i think about it, the more i believe it was the silk backing. should i re-tiller it?
-
I think, no!
First shoot her! Then you can decide if you have to correct the tiller ;)
-
I just realized you had reflexed tips. That gives the appearance of stiff tips when they are actually bending. Pat
-
Leave well enuf alone Marius, if it feels good let it ride.
DanaM
-
wow! Looks great! That handle is a great idea even if it's a borrowed design. Paint job looks great to. I think you will be just fine with that tiller.
-
Tiller looks fine to me.
That's a really neat bow. Wow!
-
thanks guys. i feel better now ;D
-
Very nice ,the paint job is cool also, that must have taken some time. The tiller looks good to me also.
Pappy
-
Nice overall looking bow Dustybear. Handle is inspiring. Paint job is great. Tiller? ??? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ;D Listen to me with only 8 bows under his belt. :-[

Very nice bow, how did you put the reflex in the limbs? I've never had much luck heat-bending hickory.
Sometimes when you do a full draw pic, if you are canting the bow even slightly it'll make the top limb look a little stiffer. That or even a different grip can change the look of the tiller a bit. Its pretty darned close if you ask me, should hold up fine at that length and poundage.
-
Great looking bow, looks like a shooter as well.
-
Sweet looking bow. Love the artwork on the bow.
-
looks great, fine design. Its holding its profile well so don't change it. Shoot it til it begs for mercy.
Dave
-
thanks for the kind words guys.
snedeker, that's exactly what i'm gonna do ;D
dick, i still remember your number 3, that's how impressed i was
pappy, bet you say that to all the boys ;D
-
Very nice and certainly bookmarked for April Self Bow of the Month.
-
even though i don't stand a chance against some of the beauties i've already seen this month , it's an honor just to participate. thanks don
-
Thats a really neat bow! I've done that cocked handle a couple of times but still can't deside if I like it, how about yourself?
dan
-
Very nice bow Marius!
I have thought about that design of handle for the improved center shot characteristics. Never have attempted one though. Didn't know how it would feel shooting. I cant the bow quite a bit, your handle design I would think would possibly lessen the amount the bow was actually canted if you held your hand as you normally would when shooting.
Do you like the feel of the bow/handle arrangement as much as without it?
-
dan, greg, i actually like it a lot. this is my second bow with a handle like that. greg, you're right, you cant the bow less if you don't pay attention ;D but the main reason for this stile handle is still the spine tolerance of a centershot bow, with the primitive look of a straight handle
-
I saw a bow,on this site years ago, that had that style handle.Ever since then, ive wanted to make one.I tried once, and ruined the stave due to inattentiveness. No fault of the handle,of course.Seein this one, makes me wanna do another.I like it.Congrats.
-
Marius could ya post a close up pic of the handle? Thanks eh.
DanaM
-
Marius, sorry to get off the topic of your really nice bow...
I posted the physical weight of my bow in ounces per your request for Badgers formula to be compared. :)
-
traxx, thanks. you should try it. i think you'll like it.
dana, i wasn't going to, until the handle wrap is on, but i'll make one when I get back from work, if you promise not to look to closely ;D
no sweat greg. thanks for weighing her. i wonder how much weight is in the skins and nock-overlays. have you shot her thru a chronograph yet?
-
Thanks Marius, I will close one eye ok :)
DanaM
-
well dana, here they are: you can even see the splice of the silk in the center of the handle ;D

-
Very nice bow. Congratulations. Jawge
-
Thanks Marius, I appreciate the close ups. Very well done bow.
I may have to be a copycat and try it.
DanaM
-
go for it dana. i think you'll like it
i just put the first two coats of tung oil on her. how many coats do y'all think i should put on her in total?
-
Marius, I usually put 5 to 6 coats of Tru-Oil on the bows I make. Some use less and some more. Depends how deep you want the finish to be. Pat
-
thanks pat. do sand or steelwool her in between?
-
@Marius
Normally i put 2-3 coats of tung-oil, then I put on shellac or a selfmixed pineresin with alcohol mixture (2-3 coats), then 1-2 coats of tung-oil and last a layer of wax. When I would use only tung-oil I will put on > 5 coats.
-
Marius. I use 0000 steel wool between coats. Pat
-
thanks guys
-
DB,
I forgot to ask about the specs,on this bow.How wide is it at the fades?
-
traxx, it's 4cm (1.57") wide tapering to 9mm (0.35") nocks and it's 1 cm (0.39") tapering to 9mm (0.35") in thickness. all strait tapers
-
dusty! - i just came back from a tour through southeast asia with a band. at a craft's store in cambodia i watched folks handpaint silk scarfs and stuff and thought i would do something like this, too.
very nice bow!! could imagine the handle shape helps to avoid wristpains in the bowhand, doesn't it?!
frank
-
dunno frank, since i don't seem to be able to make a bow over #40, i never had any wristpains ;D
-
Very nice bow. Gluing the silk on seems to have changed the tiler slightly. I would take just a few light scraped from the outer top limb
-
thanks marc, that's what i thought too. i still want to shoot her some more and see what else shows up and then fix it all at one time.
dana, i put the rawhide handle wrap on it last night. i'll post some pictures when i get home from work.
-
Hey Marius, are you going to bring a bow with you to the Tn. Classic?
If you want to conserve space to maybe carry more home with you, we can come up with plenty of bows for you to shoot if you'd like. I have I think three bows right now that I'm not shooting. All three osage, ranging from 50-57 lbs. @ 26".
Just wanted to let you know that option was available to you if you're interested... ;)
-
actually, with the restrictions on importing wood, i might not be able to bring a bow. but since i'll participate in the challenge, i hope to end up with a shootable bow ;D i thought you guys had already roughed one out for me ;D
but arrows, if i could borrow some arrows, that would be nice. i'll try to make some with pat at the campfire, but just in case.
greg, that was very nice of you to offer and i would like to keep that as a fall-back option, if you don't mind.
-
dana, as promissed:
the raw hide is from a dog chew bone from the pet store. ;D

-
Best not be leaving that bow around where a dog can get at it - it might like it as we do :o
-
yep, this guy would have made short order of it (and the bow with it). unfortunately he died 2 years ago.
here's a link to his page:

The first piece of rawhide for the handle that i offered Marius was eaten by a nice little dog ;D
-
I really like that handle wrap Marius, It looks like it will provide a sure grip.
One more question what ya gonna seal the rawhide with so it don't get wet?
Beautiful dog Marius. St Bernard? Dang he probably pooped bigger than my Yorkies ;D
DanaM
-
Marius, I like the way the bow turnedout. I think I'm going to try that handle design.
Dana, its a Leonberger. Justin
-
yep, andrew's dog is something else, first she refused to look for my arrows (after she found everybody else's), then she ate my handle wrap ;D
dana, i was going to use tung oil, just like on the rest of the bow, but i'm new to this, so i don't know if it's going to work. i'm surprised how transparent rawhide gets when it dries.
justin, i'm impressed. you hardly find people here in germany who know the breed. or did you cheat and look at his web page? ;D
