Title: New Boo-Backed Osage/Ipe - Arrows Added
Post by: 4est Trekker on July 29, 2010, 09:13:31 pm
Hey, all.  I just finished this boo-backed ipe/osage from a blank from James Parker at Huntworthy Productions (James goes by robustus here on PA).  It's 68" ntn, pulls 43#@26", has horn/osage nock overlays, a trapped back, and a sunburst  dye-job on the back (which James applied before he shipped it out to me - he's a REAL whiz when it comes to dying boo!). It's sealed with several coats of lacquer followed by 4 coats of spar urethane, the last two of which were frosted.  It's got a handle that finally fits my goofy grip (which is similar to Fred Asbell's).  Not sure why the brace height appears so high in the second picture...it's only braced at just a hair under 6".

James does GREAT work and is a heck of a fellow to talk with.  I'm not sure if he's still offering bow blanks or not...I'll check on that.  But if he is, I'd highly recommend him.

Oooh, that's just too sweet. What wood did you use for the dark "walnut" colored handle?

The handle is osage and ipe (which is, ironically, also know as "Brazilian walnut").  :)

Amazing job on the boo staining!  Did you stain in all red then come in with the darker?  Rest of the bow looks great too.

Thanks for the kind words, all.  Regarding the stain job:  I had James do it before he shipped the blank out, so I can't take the credit. He uses a breath atomizer to apply the dyes.

James gets ALL the credit on this dye job!  Thanks again, everyone, for the kind comments.

I've contacted James to see if he still sells bow blanks for those of you who have asked, but I've not heard back from him yet.  Will keep ya posted.  :)

Here's some pictures of the new matched dozen arrows I made to go along with my new bow.  They're stained with an aniline tobacco/black sunburst and finished with lacquer, then 3 coats of Tru-Oil, then two frost coats of lacquer.  Once fletched, they were coated with Gunstock Wax.  The dye job was supposed to match the bamboo, but the colors didn't quite come out quite right.  Oh well.  I'm not really fond of the white fletching, but I sure do like being able to see the arc of the arrow in flight.
