Well, not really, but I thought it would be fun to look at some toiletite/johnstone points from some of our knappers as you get time and material to work on them, no rush, post'em as you make'em. Give that old toilet a more dignified existance-let's see some recycled crappers. ;D We could come up with a particular point type to try to make, or just make whatever.
-
This will be interesting. I just hope this thread doesn't take the turn that most do and somehow turn to food. ???
I'm going to start on another soon.

oh man, i hope a bunch of wives dont come home to drained toilets with the tank missing...wait, that gives me a idea....

Alright, I'll get this started. I've moved one of the pictures from my other post as my entry.
Good ole Johnstone. I've still got plenty more where that came from.

Do have to use the tank? Or can you use the flat section from the bowl where the tank sits? Just curious . I have an old bolw on my work shop. Makes a nice stool. :-X ( Pardon the pun) ;D
-
Aww, ya went and done it now Steve ;D. I can see this turning into one of those threads that keeps ya laughin :D. OK - git home next week, go to ole homeplace, locate old crapper out in woods. At least it's been out there a good twenty years, maybe I'll find a bonus rattlesnake in it..
-
Otoe thats a crappy point ;) ;D Is that from a US Standard or one of them fancy French bowls ;D Oh this is gonna be fun.
Can I be the judge Hillbilly I don't know crap about knappin but I know sewage :D
Nice Point eh.
-
i broke some of the wifes good plates the other day and saved em for points. now you want me to smash up the head. dude im gonna be in the doghouse ;D
-
I guess I will take a hammer to the bowl and see what happens. I reckon I can get a few decent pieces out of the business end of that unit.
-
Will try and squeeze out a crappy point ;) For ya 2morrow. Make do a little straining in the process.
-
I'll try to make one tomorrow if I get a chance.
Secret to knapping johnstone: Beat the *crap out of it. :)
-
I'll give it a shot, but when I get to the preassure work it may be hard to PUUUSH those flakes off :-X.
-
I have almost worked up a sweat ;D That is alot of pushing and beating and straining.
-
Save yourself some grief with the wife, go to McDonald's and take the lid off their toilet. Steve, are we going for the thinnest, and prettiest thunder chert point?
-
I dont have any crap stone :'( if i take a piece of our thunder mug i bet no one would notice ;D
-
Let's see, for those of you keeping score at home, that's:
2 crap jokes
2 "squeezing out" or straining jokes
and several other defecation references, and we're still on the first page.
;D
I like it. Way to go Steve. ;D
Dana, You're killing me too.

well i was working a nice dalton about 6" long and just like my luck, smacked it in half. figures, well i managed a decent small point outa it but its not the one i want to show, so tomarrow maybe i'll give it another try to make a bigger one.- Ryan

I think we should deduct points for splatter marks, clingons, streaks, and any other disturbing discolorations on the johnstone heads. LOL ;)
-
Oh this is good, just got home and can't quit laughing. I'm fairly sure that there is still some royal porcelin out in my pile of crap :D behind the play house ;D Guess I'll have to go dig through everything to see what I can find. Hopefully the snow hasn't melted into a solid sheet of ice. I don't think I want to do any ice fishing out there. :D Do we get deducted for inclusions in our work ??? What about pitting and staining ???
Do we need to provide proof of authenticity of origin and a history of probable use. ???
I've heard that short quick stikes on the edge with your tool will produce random flaking. ;D Keenan
-
;D Maybe I'll try to make a Morrow Mountain #2. ;D

heres my crappiest knife blade.

Way to go MBG. :).
Otoe

Very cool MBG.
I am gonna try and push one out tomorrow. Hopefully it is somewhat as elegant as yours.
-
After this you will all will no longer be knappers but hence forth you shall be known as Crappers ;D
Important safety tip be sure to flush first :o
-
nice knife
-
Good looking knife, Jamie.
-
I got one roughly bifaced out, figured I'd take pics before I break it :) I haven't decided yet whether to break it while fluting it into a Clovis, or break it while notching it into a dovetail, or break it some other creative way. ;D

Nice work y'all. Really like the point Steve and the knife Jamie !........................bob
-
OK, here's the finished product. I decided to make it into a Dalton, one of my favorite types. The johnstone kinda looks like the Burlington chert that most of those Sloan daltons were made from, but it's a heckuva lot tougher. I'd forgotten how much fun it is to try to run long pressure flakes on that stuff-I've now got a big blister on my Ishi finger. :) It's a little shy of 6" long x about 1 1/4" wide. A little thick, but not bad for the point type and this crappy material-I think it would do the deed on a longhorned bison or a stray mastadon. Sorry for the crappy pics, hard to get flake scars to show on a white point.

Nice finished product Steve...bob

Thankee, Bob.

Way to go Hillbilly, With one that good I think I just gave up ::)
I've never even tried this crapy material until now and now I know why. Cut my teeth on obsidian and with plenty of it around here I never ventured to get myself in trouble with the the royal throne. Beat the crap out of a few pieces this afternoon but ended up breaking everything eventually. Is it normal for that stuff to give off various oders while napping it ??? Keenan
-
Depends did ya flush first :o
-
Great Job Guys. I was on the road today, so no Kappin' for me. Maybe I'll take some to work with me tomorrow and sneak off at lunch and make some flakes. I think I'll make a hatchet. After all, I still have the handle..... ;D
Otoe
-
Nice knife Jamie! Well I'll tell ya Steve - looks like you been on the john awhile :D. That's one hell of a nice lookin Dalton!! I have yet to get around any Johnstone but will give it the dickens when I get home - have patience ;D.
-
Thanks guys. One thing about johnstone, it's crappy stuff, but it'll teach you to build good platforms, it has no tolerance for bad ones. If you don't get the right platform built, the flake will step or hinge, or the whole piece will break. Oh, and a disclaimer: the stains on the preform are blood, not something else. ;D
-
Oh yeah, meant to add that I saw some blood on there - I had a leak myself today ;D.
-
I thought that was blood. I cut myself hauling my tank out of the dump. I feel official now. ;)
Otoe
-
wicked nice piece steve
-
Come on guys, based on the number of entries, I'd say I'm in second place. ;D. We need more. 8)
Otoe
-
Steve, that point is craptastic! Allright, I'm gonna get to gettin! I'm gonna go there; blood from your hand or blood from your????? (rhymes with cool).....sorry ;D
-
I'll get one on here this weekend, Turkeys are starting to take over my life for awhile.
-
My Johnstone attempts have been CRAPPY! Everytime I try and make one it turns into Crap. No luck yet will keep trying.
-
Eddie, lucky you. :D. I've made a deal for a place to hunt, just getting time to do a little scouting is hard, seeing that it's about 45 miles away. Based on what I've seen you guys do, I feel the silver (and bronze) slippin' away. 8)

i'll try to get one on here this week end. i just gt to find a toliet ???
-
Was at Home Depot a couple days ago and i saw the toilets they have for sale and i had one of my "brilliant" ideas, i found a employee and asked if they had any broken toilets in the back that they wanted to get rid of, i thought he was going to call security....lol..so i explained why i wanted to know..needless to say i left without any johnstone.... :(

At this point, it looks like Hillbilly's the man on the "Throne".
Come on men, step up and start squirting out some points. ;D ;D ;D
-
Hey Michbowguy, sorry man, I forgot about your knife post when I made my comment about Hillbilly and I were the only ones that had posted pics so far. :-[ Yours is awesome.
I tried making an ax or tomahawk last night but it just kept breaking. And my hands were getting cold.
