Title: R/R Spike Tomahawk
Post by: Pennhawk on February 18, 2010, 06:33:40 pm
What do you think guys, could ya use this around your campfire?

I forged this from a high carbon railroad spike.  It's fitted with osage orange that has a few checks in it so I filled em with crazy glue and saw dust.  The handle is finished with a bees wax and bear grease mixture.

Enjoy.

:o Cool, when I get to Montana this year, I hope to find a large anvil, and build a forge also.  I have lots of railroad spikes, and that is one of the things that I definitely want to make. 8)

Very nice!  Put a curved spike opposite the axe blade and I'd be interested.

For those times around the campfire when the discussion becomes "interesting", you could always bring it out as visual punctuation for your highly reasoned and supremely logical point of view!

I used to pound out blades now and again. Never tried a railroad spike, or made a Tomahawk. Way cool man.

I'm going to have to come down some weekend and play Chris. You can teach me how to use that forge.  ;D

You say forged. do you think i might be able to do this with a blow torch, hammer, and anvil? i have a few of these spikes layin round and have been inspired 8).  how did you forge out your center hole for the handle?

Hey Aries,I think you could use a torch. To get the hole through you heat the spike red where you want the hole and drive a chisel through, it will take a few heats and keep cooling the chisel about every 5 blows. once you get the hole opened up with the chisel heat it red again and drive a tomahawk  drift in the hole from the top of the spike. A drift is a piece of ductal iron shaped and tapered to shape the hole.
