I have an old piano that needs to be disposed of, that has ivory key surfaces. We looked into getting it fixed, but it wasn't worth it. The repair person said ivory can't be sold (due to animal protection I assume). My thought is that it possibly could be used in bow building somehow. It's thin 1/16"or less. How would you use it? Any good ideas? I thought about the possibility of trading it also. I'm not sure about the legality of trading though.

I have used and traded Ivory key covers. I used them as thin overlays.

Spines for reinforced self nocks for arrows. You could possibly layer them for bow tip overlays. Also, inlaid at the arrow pass. Good trade items too like Clint said.

Don't forget about the ebony keys.. Good for tips..
Thanks Leroy

I think they can be bought and sold as they would be pre-CITES ban.
If you salvage them, drop me a line. I am interested in a few. Lemme know whatcha want in trade.

I'd be interested in trading for some of the ebony. It's pretty pricey now-a-days, that's if you can even find it.

Unfortunately the black keys are just painted wood. :-\

I plan on salvaging them. I'd be happy to do a trade.

Seems ivory is the easiest to skrimshaw on too.Compared to horn that is.I think it's got to do with the finer grain maybe.
