, I posted unfinnished pics of this bow 5-6 months ago, it has been balanced/tillered with heat and pressure and decorated and the sinew has had nearly 8 months to dry. This bow is the practice run to my first horn bow. If I knew what I know now , I would have stressed the bow much more, it should have more reflex and be 6 inchs shorter, to get the best out of these materials ( I believe) . But still , it is a reasonable shooter, it feels steady with not much hand shock. but I know the potential is there for more speed and power!!
It has a bamboo back, very thin ipe core and 3 layers of Scottish red stag leg tendon/sinew. 56" ntn. nearly 1 1/2" wide for most of the limb. The siyas are taken from a natural bend in a piece of Welsh oak, and the glue was made of cow hide. It shoots about 58lbs at 27"
I glued several sinew wraps down the limbs because as the sinew dried and shrank it caused a few longitudinal splits in the bamboo , i thought the wraps would be a good precaution, but now I think them unnecessary , I just lacked faith in the hide glue.
after unstringing it returns to about 7" of reflex in a few hours.
I didn'y copy any specific style of bow , just used what I had and it turned out like this. I guess that a bow like this could have been made any where in asia!!!

My full draw pics where'nt so good, I'll take some more and post them tomorrrow!!
-
beautiful piece of work, does the grip feel comfortable?
-
Yes, I was suprised, because it is backwards to what I'm used to, but It feels good in the hand
-
Very Very Nice!! What an amazing transformation its gone through from the first time l saw it. Great Job.
Just wondering, how thin is the ipe core?
-
Nice, a couple of questions. What did you use to make the transition between the siyas and limbs. Did you use putty or something to make it flow at the transition. How about a full draw picture. ;D
-
Sweet, that's a pretty respectable draw weight, and I'd guess you could pull it waaaay back to 31" if you wanted.

Justin, the siyas are spliced to the wooden core and the splice is covered with sinew, no need for putty or any filler, just blend the sinew into the siyah.( I'm gonna take a new full draw pic tomorrow and post it.)
JustAim, the ipe core is 2 1/2mm thick

Holy Smoke - what work!

Very cool bow. I would love to shoot it.
-
You did a great job, what a nice piece of work.
-
Fantastic bow, I too like the work you put into the siyah's. VERY NICE!!
-
Way to go I like the look of that bow!!!
-
Wonderful workmanship. A beautiful bow.
-
Pretty!

This bow is a one of a kind piece of art. Colors are unusual for a bow but its nice to see something different. Can't wait to see the full draw.

Thanks, that was what I wondered. It is so smooth that you cant see the texture from sinew. I wondered if you used a filler or if the paint was thick enough to hide the texture.
-
Dragonman, you got some mad skillz. ;D
Beautiful, beautiful bow.
-
SUPERB!!!!!!!
-
heres a full draw pic, The wife just took in our garden
Thanks for the compliments guys I appreciate them. Actually, I think the main difficulty with this type of bow is -patience-, all the individual operations are quite straight forward!!

Holy Smoke - what work!
Amazing work! I d k if i have the patience to build bows like that! This one really rocks, dragonman
-
Nice Bow!!! You win!!! -josh

That is very impressive, you really have some talent Dragonman. I like the blue color too, we don't see much of blue colored bows.
-
Thanks again guys, it's nice to get some feedback for your work, I only know one other bowyer >:(! shown a few friends but they can't relate to what they're looking at and just look blank ??? only bowyers know whats invoved in making a bow!! but the real credit goes in making a bow with a good performance not just good looks. This one is not bad but coud be better, I reckon one of my boo backed ipe bows is faster!!!
-
Do you have any chronograph stats yet, be interesting to see what this style of bow meters:)
-
ZenBowyer, i've been looking to buy a chrono for a while , Don't think they are for sale in UK. ( does anyone know different??) I'll have to order one from the States. Anyone have one for sale out there?
-
You can get a basic chronograph for just over $100, any of thee major suppliers, $200-250+ will get you a few bells and whistles:)
-
I like the way your bow bends, nice and fluid
-
Chris Cade, Meclesher, Made one like that. It was sinew backed osage. He won BOM with it and said the same thing you are. It shot, Okay, but could be better. That is one pretty bow and I would be proud to make one that nice. Mine broke :P
-
;D ;D ;D
Very nice.
-
Congratulations on a very beautiful work of art and complicated bow to build. For your first horn bow, you did awesome. We are often our own worst critics and always learn what we could do better on a bow. But as you have heard from some very experienced bowyers that is an accomplishment to be proud of. Keenan

Beautiful work. I take it you meant the belly is bamboo? If you wished it was shorter couldn't you just draw it further if you feel it could be stressed more?
-
GREAT JOB, that bow begs to be shot from horseback... way to go..Hawk a/ho
-
I said it before I saw the full draw and I'll say it again. That is a piece of art. Bending real nice also ;)
-
Nicely done!
-
... I take it you meant the belly is bamboo?...
Was wondering, too...??
-
Thanks again, yes it is the belly that is bamboo
-
wow !! great looking bow , how many hours did you put in to that??
-
many hours , lost count, took 8 months. These arent the origanal siyas ,one of the first ones broke and nearly hit me in the head, so I soaked off the sinew from the tips and replaced them, its been a long term project!!!
-
Very nice work, great detail work. :)

WHOAH! that bow is just insane. Really good work Dragonman!!
-
Congratulations!! That's one beautiful bow! I'm afraid I wouldn't have the patience, or the skills, to make one like that. Nice job. :)
-
Dragonman
Here's a chrony for about $100
[CENSORED]
-
thanks for that link ZenBowyer, I think that chrony, will be good enogh for me, I have to just look into shipping,if that is reasonable I'll get one, and I'll pm you the arrow speed results!
and thanks again for all the compliments and encouragement everyone else, the bow just looks harder to make than it is!!!
-
WELL! This is obviously a major contender for Nov Laminate BOM
