Alright guys, you all know the drill. This is where you post about whatever you're working on for you trade recipient. Just be sure to leave out who that recipient is. That is of course unless its me >:D ;) ;)
-
I have a box of assorted goodies already but I just checked out who I got and revamped the box a bit. All I need is a little more research to pull it all together. A little wood cuttin too :D
-
ive got a plan layed out just need to get the materials
-
What u need jordo ? I got my plan started today and things in motion. Whoever got me I'll take whatever. I could use some back sinew O:)
-
Knife making begins tomorrow. I would love to give some nice points, but I would need about 200# of stone. Maybe a wood harvest. Then some sewing. >:D Good thing I like sewing!
-
I need a piece of Osage, like a stump cut off for a display.
-
Just need to get the handle on this and see what else I can turn out.
-
Sweet man! I already got a couple things in progress. Got another couple in the works. I love the Christmas trade
-
So hopefully this little five curve gets it done. Adding overlays and then sinewing. I know I don't have to in that order but I want a little more meat for the string when I reverse brace. Plan on attempting to make a set of 3 arrows as well. Nothing too fancy. Just the profile for now
-
Pistol grip knife made out of carbide skill saw blade i made sure to leave carbide tip also gonna make a holster for it
-
Materials all laid out,Now just need the upper 90s and 95% humidity to go away. :o
-
Some Knife making today. Not too bad for my first one.
-
Whys everyone making knives?! lol
-
Burned out on the bow trade I guess!
-
Got something started yesterday and have another idea or two ,and who doesn't like knives? ;D
-
I would take about anything that someone made me. I don't think I would enjoy a turd :o. As far as bows go, I can see giving a stave, I would love a stave if I was short on wood. I would never turn down Osage. I am currently sitting on 3 boards, a juniper stave, and a hole in the limb Osage. Knives are just fun. I never thought I would enjoy it as much as I did. Now I have to make a sheath.
-
Well blaflair tis the season for giving so im throwing in my build along bow with arrows and the knife
-
I should have gotten the photo of you with cookies in your beard >:D
-
I wasn't complaining or anything. Just highly it was funny so many knives have been posted already. I love knives.
-
I know blaflair i just really wanted give
-
Just because im fat and in a shop building presents with cookies in my beard doesn't make me santa
-
Knives bendy handle bows and cookies. I love em all!
-
just fyi if you should check your recips local laws on knives. here in cali we cant carry knives with a blade over 4"
-
Not even hunting?
-
thats a different story. i meant like an everyday hang on your belt knife.
-
Im thinking a quiver... im in the process of brain tanning a deer hide right now. I hope it comes out ok. I hope my recipient could use a quiver... hes kinda a knife guy from what I gather.... but im not so good at knives, especially compared to him. It will be a quiver that can be carried as a back or side depending on how he wants it t be carried. Also for target shooting it has a side stake that jams into the ground to hold the entire thing straight up so you can just grab the arrows with out any awkwardness.
-
I have tied some flies that should work in my guys local waters. Working on a knife(s) because I wanted to be like all the other kids! A few raw materials for knife and bow building and maybe a home made set of arrow heads... still room in the box?! Ok, some feathers, some knapping material, a knapping tool or two... Bone?... yeah now some bone
-
Well I guess since everyone else is making knives..... Lol. I was actually thinking of making a knife myself. I have one started. I'll post a pic of it when I get a chance.
To whoever got my name, I'll be happy with whatever you send. A knife, a tomahawk, a bow, a quiver, some arrows, raw materials, or anything else you might want to send. I'm not picky. I mostly make bows and an occasional knife. I haven't made any arrows yet, but I will one of these days.
-
just put mahogany handles on with osage dowells
-
I have some materials gathered. I will start working on them tomorrow after bow hunting.
-
I don't have any pictures .but so far I carved a morrel mushroom o a cherry walking stick and I have a nice shed deer antler I found this year to through in and a stave. And who knows what else.
-
Winning lottery ticket?
-
Winning lottery ticket?
Is that considered a natural resource ?
-
Well , I'm gonna go against the grain. I can turn out a pretty decent knife , but I have a piece of two year old osage that keeps talking to me. I also am thinking some arrows like the one I gave Pat B in the arrow trade. Althogh my guy is an osage bow builder so maybe a nice belt hawk if I break the stick.
-
Isn't the spirit of giving great?
-
Winning lottery ticket?
Is that considered a natural resource ?
Ummm.... numbers are! Numbers are natural. And a replenishable one, so thats important.
-
Got a start on my gift this morning. Rooted around the yard and shop to gather up the required materials and then got at it. Involves wood, hemp, bone, and steel... not a knife. Will post some pics later.
-
Took an hour or so today and just about got the sheath done before I had to go to a family party.
-
Looks like a lot of great things from many talented craftsmen.
-
Not so much talent as sheer determination from me >:D
-
Not so much talent as sheer determination from me >:D
Hey, in a lot of cases, that's better!
-
How many Christmas traders are on Face Book? Might be easier to stalk,I mean see other intrest they have. :)
-
I am, and since we are already friends, its easier to stalk my page. If you didnt drsw my name, send me something anyway. ::)

I am but I'm private. No stalking necessary. I would gladly take anything anyone wants to send me. Materials, Knives, Knapping stuff. I am in it to make something for my name.

I started this one out with a piece of sycamore.

Then a little more, a third face on the back side of the stick. I haven't figured out what he will be, but I am thinking maybe a mountain man.

-
Cool josh, I'm still pounding sinew. Lol gonna sinew nj the next few days
-
Nice Josh, want any exotic woods?
-
Depends on what you want for them. I don't have a lot to trade. What I really need are some brass pins to attach them with.

-
Tyke that was pretty funny, I just showed a few guys at work. Merry huntin one and all
-
So I found time to sinew my bow, well ny MY bow :'( this little sucker may be pretty impressive. There's one sketchy spot where it has a check that goes around a knot. It'll be wrapped after all said and done. What y'all think? I plan on making a few other things to go with it. Hopefully @&)@$ likes it! If not I'll keep it >:D I can short draw, maybe
-
I love shorties!
-
Ya never know jojo ;)
-
I don't, but then again, I haven't seen anything on here that doesn't tickle my fancy a bit. It is about giving, I just need to make sure my member gets enough!
-
Thats cause your short joe
-
>:(, i'm six feet tall. Just because you are 6'3 doesn't make me short. The average american male is 5'10, so that makes me tall. So take that you tall freak! >:D
-
Excuse me im 6'4"
-
Got some materials from blaflair2 today. I'll get started as soon as I get home. Thanks again bruce

Red oiser dogwood shaft, bull snake skin crest, turkey feathers. Still waiting on a point, looking for something Purdy. Gonna make a display stand as well
-
Working on a Rawhide strap on quiver. That stuff is kinda hard to work with :-\
-
Almost done with mine :) I think Mr. Whatshisname might just like it. Pics soon as I can catch one of my yunguns to take some for me. 8)
-
I have the hair cut in on two of the wood spirits and started the mountain man below them. I also decided to try a basket weave on the back to fill in the void and give some texture for grip.

-
You ever do one of those and leave a round ball of wood in it as if it were caged in the wood?
-
Yes I have done several of them. There is one tucked away in the top of this one.
-
Nice.... im enjoying watching this build.
-
I migt have to develop a limp
-
Madcrow, I think you might have violated the back on that there bow, but it sure looks nice.
-
Since my guy lives a little North of me,I know it gets cold there,So I made a pair of Rabbit skin mittens. These are some of my rabbits I butchered last year, Also I figured everybody needs a squirrel cooker, this one is just the right size for a backpack. It finally got sort of cool so I could fire up the forge! Hope you like them Mr Whatshisname ;D

-
Looks like you are at the Fair. ;D
-
TTT, anyone got any new progress?
-
I've got all the stuff together for my knife including some leather for a sheath and some beautiful scales sent to me by NeolithicMan. I've decided that I'm not quite happy with the taper, and it could use a heat treating. Right now I'm trying to put together a charcoal forge to heat it in.
-
I've got all I need to put my trade together. I should have it all done in a few days.
-
Josh, to temper my friend uses a toaster oven. 400 degrees for like 2 hrs. If that's what u mean by treat it
-
That's part of it Bruce, but I need to anneal it so I can drill the holes and do a bit more stock removal. Then I'll harden and temper it. That means I need to heat it to critical temp ( about 1500 degrees ) a few times and that's where the forge comes in. I want make it the best I possibly can, so I'm learning all I can.
-
I thought ya already had it made. Get a big magnet. Heat it till it's non magnetic and that's the temp ya want.
-
Yeah, I guess made it look that way. I didn't mean too. I did everything so far with a bench grinder and I'm sure I probably ruined the original file heat treat in the process so I'm gonna re-do it just to be safe.
-
Wifes working late, so I got to stay in the garage later. I don't want to give too much away, but here are some things I worked on.
-

Didja use square stock on the fork or round stock, Rick?
-
Round Stock. Got a bunch layin around I found. :)
-
Got my Christmas Trade item finished today. It's a GFA style side quiver I made from old Selway bow quiver. The hood and arrow grip were added to an ash board with diamondback cover and then added an adjustable leather shoulder strap.
This is my favorite style hunting quiver. It holds the arrows securely, quietly and safely and can be carried on your side or slung back behind to get it out of the way.
I'm also throwing in 3 hill cane arrows with field points, self nocks and turkey wing feather fletch.

-
Wow! Nice Pat!!
-
Thanks guys. Its such a great hunting quiver I just have to pass it on. ;)
-
I managed to get some arrows fletched the other night. I still need to get some more feathers processed.
-
I hope my recipient needs a quiver as well.

That is some nice looking work there Bowman. You have some talent.
-
thanks. hopefully i can get it hafted and get the display done this week
-
So Elijah made me a point for my arrow I'm making. Thanks again. Just halfted it. Man that pine pitch cleared my sinuses. It's my first arrow ever. I tried. Lol. Hope so and so likes it
-
My picture posting ability is pretty much non existent at the moment. But, I have made a prototype quiver for my guy. Its just a test as it was a first, ill be making him a better one than this. Its body is a rain stick cactus ive hollowed out with a cane stick down the side to hold the deer skin egg tan shoulder strap. The cane stick is long and stout enough to jam into the ground so as to hold the quiver up on its own. There will be stitch work leather around the base and a bow sock attatched to the bamboo stake so you can store the bow and arrows together when not being used. It can also all be carried on your back. It will be a top draw quiver. If I have time I may make him a bow for it as well. We will see, gonna be getting back In touch with nature allot here real soon. Thinking about keeping a journal about it, if anyone is interested, spending fall living in the woods roughing it with my wife and son. They are both excited. If anyone is interested lemme know, ill start a thread, camp life and cooking, daily adventures.
-
Hey everyone, it's getting quiet so bows the time were gonna start bugging people. Let's keep the thread alive and can everyone just check in. Let us know how it's going. If u need message jo5h or I.
-
I need to make a few more small Items. And figure a way to attach the quiver. Maybe make something else I never have.
-
I'm working on a few bows at the moment. My recipient will get the best one.
if they all suck he'll get a nice stave or 2 ;) lets hope it doesnt come to that
-
Well if it comes the that wizard, considering how much we all value raw materials, I cant imagine somebody not being very pleased to get some nice staves :)
-
My project is just waiting to be shipped. I wish shipping time would hurry and get here because I keep adding more to the already completed gift...and I keep thinking of even more stuff to add. ::)
-
Project is coming along good.. Had to clean up a coupla tags clock is ticking.. Should be no problem
Thanks Leroy
-
Working on mine will be out in time for Christmas
-
ive finished part of mine, now working on a blade.... havta see how it goes.
-
So, wanted to ask. Trying to find out if my victim turkey hunts. I've been making these turkey pot calls for a couple years now and wondering if my guy would use one. If not, I'm thinking he's getting a deer grunt call.
Tattoo Dave
-
No turkey for me
-
GOT some of mine done ... trying to finish up some doors for my Polaris ranger . About done then finishing up Christmas trade .. Will try to post pics :)
-
Yes to turkeys
-
I turkey hunt.
-
I could, and would if there were more of them here in NE Oklahoma. But I have seen maybe 10 in 5 years. Not going to diminish the population. Maybe in a few years.....
-
I hunts Turkeys to! I made a couple modifications on the squirrel cooker, also made a carry bag for it. Will get pictures up next week,Bow season starts tomorrow so y'all know where I will be 8)
-
Those really look good Dave what all kinds of wood do you use.
-
Wow, Dave, nice slates! I could send you some beeswax that you can treat them with, nice polish and a wonderful smell! You could market them as Dave's Patented Honey Pots!
-
I can see the add now...daves honey pots, with added scratch and sniff honey scents.
-
I do my turkey hunting in the supermarket .lol.
I have been working on my gift a little at a time.
-
Thanks fellas! I do sell a few from time to time. Mostly in the spring.
JW, I do have some beeswax, haven't got around to using any of it yet. I wonder about using it as a finish. Maybe a crazy question here, but what about people who are bee allergic? Just curious.
Trapper Rob, the woods in the pic are red cedar, ambrosia, and curly maple, and one I don't remember. But I'll use just about any wood I can get for calls.
Dave
-
Nice turkey calls! I see a lot of great stuff here guys. Im getting greedy!
Honestly, bow season started and that was it! I have neglected just about everything in the pursuit of freezer meat. Got a little done here and there for the trade, I will do a better update after a few days when Im taking a break from the blinds and stands
-
The bee allergy involves the venom, wax is secreted in a bunch of modified sweat glands on other parts of the bee. I have never heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to beeswax.
-
Here is a little taste. Some steel I got at work, not sure what it is exactly but it has not rusted in my "scrap" pile while everything else has so maybe a type of stainless. these two blades will have a 3rd to make a simple butchering set as part of my trade offering.
Full tang, 10" overall,6 1/4" boning blade
Full tang, 7" overall, 3 1/2" paring blade
-
Well, I decided to make my victim an all wood deer call. Here's the first one I've made that has snakeskin on it. Michigan milk snake that is. The wood is some really old osage and white oak. Hope he like it. I still need to pull scales off and seal the skins, but almost done.
Tattoo Dave
-
That stainless is only like 34 on the Rockwell scale john. I had Jamie test it
-
Dude, you gadda do a build a long on the deer call!
-
Build a long...I think I can do that ;). Be happy to.
Dave
-
I appreciate that.
-
Yes I to would love to see a build along on the deer call.
-
To bad deer calls dont work on our mule deer but im still interested on that build along
-
What's this Christmas thing all about?
-
Hey len, this link should answer some of you questions http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,48125.0.html (http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,48125.0.html).
This years Christmas trade is well underway, but keep your eye out for future trades. The next one will probably be the bow trade which usually starts around January.
-
so... what is this all about?
-
I'm sure there are some who could give a better answer than I, but here goes: In my opinion, Its about community, its about pushing ourselves to expand our skills, and its about giving. Its us attempting to create something to the best of our ability and then sending it along to another member of our community.
Hopefully that answers your questions :)
-
For me it is about stepping outside my comfort zone. Learning to make new things. And most of all just having a good time.
-
It's about making something for a potential stranger, doing your best work and going on your gut as to what your recipient will like.
Last year I drew an acquaintance, and knew exactly what to make him.
This year is more of a mystery.
-
In my opinion nerds have magic cards baseball fans have baseball cards and awesome people have primitive trades
-
Wow, this is very cool! There was something similar to this on a un related hobby forum of mine. You would fill a box with random parts and trade random parts with people like a mystery. Very fun.
-
IHAVE MAGIC CARDS!!
-
Go bruce
-
I also have magic cards Bruce. Tyke and I like to call ourselves Bownerds. Say it slowly!
-
Hey fellows, It's getting kinda quiet again. How about a new round of updates?
I don't have much to report. Still working on a forge or some other way to heat treat my knife blank.

You can build a fire, take a fan of some kid and point it into the fire, that will heat your blade for treating. I did that all the time until I built my forge.
-
Blow dryer works nicely fwi....

I have used a foot pump for a raft in the same manner.
-
Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll work something out.
-
half way done
-
Just need to glue on and shape the handle then make a sheath.
-
Into the assembly phase now. Rushed it and buggered a part of it up and had to do a redo but making progress.
-
Got a 15 yr old osage stave today! Making a 54" bendy handle rig. Hopefully my guys likes it!
-
I got one part done. It's simple, but handy.
Gonna make a few more things to add. Nothing like getting multiple goodies in one box, ya know?
-
Have all my materials together, just need to pick a design ;)
-
Man im really crossing my fingers for a new bow ;)
-
Man im really crossing my fingers for a new bow ;)
well you can uncross them
-
I was j/k im happy with what ever i get
-
How many bows do you need Tyke?
-
What a silly question!! He who has the most bows, wins. :D
-
I love other peoples bows, it's something to compare your work to and u can never have too many
-
I was j/k im happy with what ever i get
im just messing with you lol
-
Im with dc and as many as i can get
-
Would anyone object if the happened to have a billet of damscus included in their gift to tinker with?
-
Sleek , materials are always good! My guy is tough to figure. I have a few things going , but I am thinking a small belt ax and shoulder sheath , or a bendy woodland osage arrow flinger. I have both going decsions , decsions. Maybe both!
-
Sleek how long does it take you to make your Damascus makes some beautiful knives.
-
No way sleek id love some damascus
-
I doubt anyone would object to a bit of damascus to play with. I know I wouldn't.
-
Me like me some damascus 8)
-
Damascus would be good to receive.
-
I've always wanted to make a damascus frontier knife
-
Ok guys you convinced me. Damascus is going in the package.
-
Well here she is. Old number 9, fresh off the buffing wheel. Hope my guy enjoys it. D2 steel and red linen micarta with mosaic pins and brass tubing lanyard hole.
-
Beautiful knife
-
Very nice knife. What are the dimensions?
-
Barely over 7" overall. 2 5/8" blade. 1/8" thick full tang.
-
Perfect! 8)
-
I'm going to have to make a pattern for this one. I made it to be a user. Not too big to be a pain to carry but big enough to handle any skinning job in North America.
-
Looks good Barredowl when you going to etch my name on it? >:D
-
I would use the heck out of that.
-
If only I had an etching machine, I would be etching someone's name on it. Guess we'll have to wait and see where it ends up! Glad you like it.
-
NICE Owl Very nice.
-
They have a way to mark blades in the how to section I belive
-
I just looked for it Bruce but couldn't find it. It was posted by "4est Trecker" I believe.
-
Thanks guys. I didn't find it right away either. I would have to do some experimenting before trying it on this one. Don't want to muck it up at this point in the game.
-
Do a Google search for "etching steel". There is a ton of stuff.
-
http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/index.php/topic,24281.0.html
in the archive section
-
I believe I moved it there, bubby. :-[ Thanks for locating it.

I knew it was somewhere!
-
your probably right Pat, everyone, especially newbies need to remember that section, easy access to great info

Well , we sold the house , so I had to make a decision on my gift as time will be short between now and Christmas. I heated up a little metal and banged around this weekend , added a hard maple handle and an over the shoulder sheath. I hope &^%$#(* likes it.
-
Anyone would be pleased with that , Wildman. 8)
-
now that is cool
-
That sir is the exact design for a hatchet on my someday list. Its awesome.
-
That hawk must be for me because many people substitute cusswords for my name.
I hope &^%$#(* likes it.
-
Your name is also associated with boarding houses and Jail.

Nice Wildman!
-
What kind of steel do you use wildman.
-
Who on here fly fishes? Im getting ready to make a split cane fly rod and maybe try and turn a fly reel on the lathe.
-
I Fly fish. Tyke does too.
-
I need to hang out with you guys...
-
Lee Slikkers in Michigan is a professional split cane fly rod maker. His rods cross the line from hardworking tools into the realm of art works.
-
Hey I know him from paleoplanet. Is still on the forums?
-
I like fly fishing.
-
Trapper Rob , it is spring steel for the hawks.
-
Seems making the jigs is beyond my resources right now for a flyrod. Its on my to do list though.
-
almost got the blade done! working on a stand to go with, and some other goodies too, wont be long and I'll be ready to send!
-
If your ever in utah sleek hit us up we'll take you out
-
Ya never know, I may Tyke. Thanks.
-
Looking at all this really kool hand made goodies makes me mad at myself. Because when talk started for the Christmas trade I posted I would like to do it again this year. Guess what? I FORGOT TO SEND A PM OUT! So therefor I so not get to play along. Good stuff I'm seeing guys. Have a good one!
-
I just finished a blanket and canvas hand sewn sleeping bag for a six foot long snake. Alternatively, could be used as a bow sock, you know, if he is into that. I also finished a nice bow rack for the wall. I put something in a jar, too. But the big piece has been sawn out but not finished. Last night for some reason I dreamt of making that certain object, but my imagination went wild and included moving parts. Normally, anything I dream is just too flipping wierd for words, but this time it was pure genius. It adds a degree of complexity to the build...but it will work, I just know it will work! Oh, this is getting good!
When I ship this box, there will be a plethora of goodies!
-
Jw, you got me excited, and the odds of you drawing me are slim.... so I gadda settle down and wait till I see pics.
-
I got the bow in working on starting to bend. Gotta do a little aligning and matxhing of the limbs. We'll see. I've got a few projects going ATM
-
Question for y'all.
My gift was going to be a set of pants for a 12 inch Old Hickory butcher knife.
Is that to much knife for woods work?
Leave it big and mean or cut it down and make a spar point and mini Skinner set?
-
12 inches is good with me >:D, but more stuff is always good. I need to make a few more things, and figure how to ship some stuff to avoid breakage. Hope someone is ready for a heavy package .
-
I butcher my own deer, but im not sure what a 12 inch knife would be like. I use a 7" blade because that what I have. Id try to balance it for sure, dont wanna buther a whole deer with an unbalanced blade.... that would get very tiresome.
-
If you made cigar box guitars or banjos, would you prefer the materials alone, or the materials somewhat assembled (head made, neck made)?
-
Oh man I dont know! I would have to look at it like bows. I love making them, but learning from others craftsmanship is why we are all here. Id go with either but if you made it a person could learn from your style.
-
I have never made one. But it looks like fun. I am a tinkerer, so it is hard to stop doing anything I start. Today has been a bit crazy. I cut out and glued up 2 kids bows, worked on my Christmas trade, and thought of about 25 more things I could send with my trade gift.
-
You sound like me... good thing we aren't neighbors. Id never get anything done around the house.... already im a garage rat.
-
Joe I make CBG' s and canjos and me personally would like the materials, but if you can do a quality job go for it
-
Bubby, what woods would be suitable for a neck and such? How about string material? I just want to make sure I don't send a box of unusable crap. ;D
-
Maple walnut hickory, if ya go to cbgitty.com they sell everything and you can see what materials they are useung and what parts you need, you can't get strings any cheaper than what they sell, a simple diddly bow guitar would be cool for anyone as they are easy to learn to play with one string

joe here's a buddy of mine at work playing one of my diddly bows, just click the pic and it will play
if ya want more details send me a pm and i'll breakdown the whole build, this is closer to a no buy build than a cbg
-
We are getting close to ship date. Are you guys ready?
-
I've been ready. All I need is to find a box to ship.
-
Mine is ready I am likely gonna ship this week.
-
I think the 15th is the earliest shipping day. Shipping time is December 15 through January 15
-
Im almost done, should be ready to ship by the 15th!
-
I was born ready. 8) Huntin a box.
-
I am plugging away plugging holes.... >:D
-
Plugging holes? JW what are you up too?
-
First you take something without any holes is it. Then you make holes, several holes. Then you plug the holes! And then it's done!
-
Hmm . must be one of the triangle games with pegs in all the holes but one.
-
guys jw drew my name last year, ya'll won't be dissapointed
-
I haven't posted an update for awhile so here is what I have been working on. I have some arrows finished and need to prepare fletchings for the rest. Fletchings are split and ground, they still need to be chopped and attached. I finished tillering a tricky piece of black walnut late last night (thanks to a tillering gizmo). It came out right at desired weight. I think I am a fan of Black Walnut. I will finish sanding and shooting in today.
I had been working on a piece of ironwood and with a slip of a draw knife I went from a 55 pound bow to a 30 pound bow. That is set aside to finish later for my son. I have some other goodies ready to go along. I hope to be able to ship before Christmas but I most likely won't be ready by the 15th.
-
The old hickory is stupid sharp and I've prepped the materials for it's sheath. A little dye here, a little weaving there, and it will be good to ship before christmas.
-
Hey everybody, shipping begins in only 1 week. Let's see what everybody's got going. Here's where I am.
I've still got to epoxy the scales, peen the brass, shape and finish the handle, and dye the sheath. I should be able to finish it up next weekend. What do you guys think?
-
Looks awesome. I'll post mine when I get home. Busy Busy!
-
Got the sheath made and waterproofed. I have a couple other odds and ends I'll probably throw in too.
-
Sweet barredOwl
-
Well, I messed up the shipping and mailed mine today so if you get a package and you don't know why its there it is Santa coming early. Don't open till Christmas. :)
-
I am assembling the various items on my dining room table as they are finished. I know I like those gifts where as you dig around the box you just keep coming up with something else. And that is how I pack my box.
-
Well, I have the belt ax and sheath going out , and as I have a nice stash of osage that I have to move to the new place. I do believe my guy will be getting an "OL Yellar" stick also.
-
I really wanted to make some kind of tool or weapon for my dude, but had 4 bow sets to get done for Xmas. Weak excuse I know, and I'm sorry. I'll make it up to whoever I get in this years bow trade. I've been throwing some homemade things in a box, jams, candles, soaps, and will be sending him one of my nicest yew staves. Would of loved to make one for him, but he has made some nice bows himself, and surely this will be another. Heading to the post office this afternoon.
-
You had me at Jams!
-
Man, giving away jam and yew?! Your a nice guy.... ( said in amazement )
-
unfortunately the lady in the post office wouldnt let me send glass, so no jam or candles >:(
i got home and repacked it, still with the soap, and threw in an ocean spray stave.
my dude lives pretty far from yew or ocean spray, so i hope he puts these to good use, the soap too ;)
yew stave is 65" long and OS is 55"
(http://i1370.photobucket.com/albums/ag255/wizardgoat/IMG_2509_zpsfb599022.jpg) (http://s1370.photobucket.com/user/wizardgoat/media/IMG_2509_zpsfb599022.jpg.html)
-
Yeah, the Post Office is really down on shipping anything in a jar. I understand that, things break, packages leak, and that is not good for other people's mail. And all because someone ain't got the good sense God gave a goose to pack the jar/bottle such that rough handling won't break it.
As some folks here may attest, I have shipped glass jars of honey. I usually wrap the jar in several layers of plastic bag. Then the jar is slid into a box that has room on all four sides. I then prop the jar with wedges of styrofoam so that it is away from the cardboard on all sides, and I seal up the box. Last step, I poke a hole in the side of the box, stuff in a nozzle from a can of Great Stuff Foam Insulation and pull the trigger!!! Harder than heck to get the honey out when it arrives, but so far none of the jars have broken either!!!
-
Or just don't tell them it's glass
-
OOOH, me I hope. I want some yew and ocean spray, and my wife says I could use some soap. Been in the woods too much lately, soap might help things, if ya know what I'm saying. >:D
Tattoo Dave

By the way, Dave, the turkeys here in the Black Hills have an excellent sense of smell. Better use lotsa soap before you get here next spring!
-
My guy is going to get a walking stick with a morrel mushroom on top a sweet black locust stave and some grip leather of different colored.
-
Sorry I have been so absent for a while, deer season bug bit me bad, reeeeeal BAD this year. I only missed 5 days of hunting and I still have a january DMFA season coming up! I had some set backs in the work shop, had budmenchaca make me a SAWEEEEEEET blade from red fleck obsidian. I attached it to an antler handle, started cleaning it up and snap... I just about burned my wood shop when I saw the gorgeous blade in two... I cleaned up the smaller half and attached it to a new antler, should be a fine knife by tomorrow evening. Shipping with a few other goodies this weekend hopefully.
-
Just shipped!
-
Shipping tomorow. Hint to where its goin,, North of my house. ;)
-
Oh no! We have reached the shipping date!!! AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! I am not ready to ship!
Ok, just a couple little thingys to do and I will be. One of those thingy's will be the actual construction of the cardboard box to put the gifts into for shipping. This means I gotta go scavange a nice piece of quality cardboard.
Just in case I do not please my recipient, I promise to ship whatever I receive if you are not satisfied with what you get.
-
JW if someone isnt happy with what you send, they need a knock on the noggin. I still.have a little stain, a bunch of tru oil. This one might be done and shipped before Christmas, but I am sending a small package in advance. Probably this Friday.
-
Mine is packed up and should go out tomorrow...heading NW from here. ;)
Whomever gets their gift first should start a post with pics of his gift and everyone else can post their pics there too.
-
I will ship in the morning, if I remember to grab it on the way out the door.
-
Shipped !!! and headed West. A long skinny package and flat rate.
-
assuming it stops raing for a day ill finish it(just needs a clear coat) and ship by the end of the week.
-
Good luck on the rain stopping, Jordan. Looks like there are other storms coming in. At least the drought might be busted though. ;)
-
its been pretty crazy out here, lots of flooding but its not too bad in the area i live. might just have to spray it under the overhang and bring it inside, i hate the smell though.
-
north bayarea has 17" of rain since the beinging of december, resevoirs are overflowing.
-
From famine to feast. All that loose soil out there its a wonder Cali hasn't slipped into the ocean.
My PKG went out today with a scheduled delivery date on Tuesday, December 23, just in time for Santa! ;)
-
Mine goes east tomorrow!
-

lol i know right, all we need is an earthquake to shake things up and get it moving.
-
Just finished up and shipping tomorrow >:D
-
I shipped this morning. ETA by Friday of this week.
-
My guy isnt getting what I wanted to make him, didnt have the money to invest in equipment, but he is getting a decent amount of raw carbon steel, perhaps some Damascus, and some opals to do inlays with and maybe a quiver if I can get one together I like enough to ship. The last quiver split on me. Not happy about that, its made of dried hollowed out cactus.
-
I just got everything together and boxed up and realized I forgot something. So Out it all came, added the missing Item and back in the box. I made a rawhide and bone quiver, and it didn't turn out to the level that my victim deserved. So I stuck with the knife I made, along with a scraper, and some other goodies. Heading East tomorrow. Should be there by the 22nd. Here is a photo of the goodies, along with a personal touch not pictured.
-
Jo jo that bag of apples looks good in the picture.
Got the BL stave leather and a walking stick ready to ship tomorrow. The stave should yield two bows.
-
Oh they are. There are Kiwis too. They are sadly not part of the gift. >:D
-
Got a stave looking package from Vancouver, who do I know there... :D, cant wait until I can rip it open and find out who got me and what they sent. Finishing touches are going well an I am on track to ship saturday. Thank you for my package, you know who you are... even if I dont!
-

-

-
I'll be sending mine out Mon. or Tues.
-
Just pm me when ya do rob plz, thanks
-
Well Folks -
Had a run in with Mr Murphy the other day. He wrote Murphy's Law! Something in my well system is not working. Have not had water for two days. Of course it is right before christmas and right as I am trying to get my gift finished up.
To whom it may concern,
Your gift may not go out till after the first of the new year, but you will get it before the 15th of January..... pending nothing else goes wrong.
Hopefully I will find an easy resolution and won't have to pull my pump.
-
Tough to hear Ben. I hope everything gets back into working order.
-
Went to the post office saturday and fought my way to a new flat rate box! stood in line for an hour and left. Just sent my package today, a nice little flat rate box full of stocking stuffers is on its way to a hopefully happy recipient! Ill let them post pictures if they feel its worthy. Good times everyone, another fun trade. Thanks to bruce and josh for taking on us knuckleheads this year.
-
Alrighty mine is about done and will be in the mail in the next week or so. A lot of cool stuff so far.
-
Got to finish up the last details but wont be able to ship until after Christmas. It will be within the 15 Jan deadline though.
-
I'm sorting out some issues with weaving the sheath covering and it put me back a little.
Finishing this weekend, shipping monday.
-
The last sheath i wove, i ended up whittling out a blank a bit smaller than the sheath, and holding everything in place with rubber bands while i was weaving. Quite tedious for my fat fingers.
-
Got my shipping box half built today...fully intended to get it out today so I could open my gift tonite. But then a friend called, she had slipped and fallen. She struck her head and was bleeding badly. Got her to the hospital and fixed up with a butterfly bandage (you know head wounds, bleed like mad), and spent part of the day looking for her dog that had ran off when she fell.
Found the dog, she's ok, and I'm at work wishing customers a Merry Christmas. Will Ship on Friday...if the post office doesn't burn down!
-
Hellova day JW. Glad you were close by to help her. Bet she was too. Your a good man Charlie Brown.
-
This will be heading out friday. I hope my victim likes it. Three wood spirits, with a basket weave pattern filling in between them.
Here is the top. it has a wooden ball in it that rattles when it is moved.

Here is the basket weave pattern I carved in it. It looks much better than leaving it blank.

-
The sycamore took the stain a bit darker than I like, but over all it turned out pretty good. I will ship it on Friday.
-
That's some beautiful carving, Madcrow. Someone is gonna be pleased with it I'm sure.
Merry Christmas to all. Now get to bed so Santa can make his rounds. ;)
-
very nice!
-
Alright so now I have messed up 2 bows. Looks like my guy won't get a finished bow but luckily I had a really nice Black Locust stave set aside just in case. Everything is packed up and ready to ship on Monday. The USPS will have 2 packages heading East on Monday.

Horrible feeling, ain't it? But just one question, what happened to the Black Locust stave...I mean, you said you are shipping two packages! >:D
-
It is a horrible feeling JW. It happens when I am in a hurry. Speed kills in bow making. I do have two packages ready. A BL stave in one and the other is packed with arrows and some other useful items.
-
My guy gets just one box. But it's stuffed! >:D It's eastbound tomorrow morning!
-
I have had many things keeping me busy this fall and winter. I am afraid my guy is getting raw materials for his box, despite all my fun plans for things to make. Hopefully he will like what he gets. Sending some steel for knife stock including files and bar stock of 5160, gonna send a few bits of wood for shingles, a billet of cable damascus, as well as some opals and turquoise for inlays or sheaths, etc.. hope he likes it all and isnt too upset with raw materials.
-
I they get upset Sleek send it to me! Id love all that :)
-
Ill take that into consideration ;)
-
I had my basket making apprenticeship lesson today from 9-5, and when I got home I just kept weaving until my Present was done.
It's got a pine liner to protect the splints, but is otherwise 100% Vermont grown black ash, hand processed and woven.

Belt loops took a little puzzling over, but I got them on there solid.

And a detail on the Cowiss (embellishment)

Should be shipped out tomorrow or Tuesday.
-
Very cool ash basket sheath. Nice work.
-
Looks like some people are getting some nice stuff.
If you have my name I am in need of a snake skin or two:-) and as far as raw materials go I don't make knives so steal to me is worthless . and I have plenty of Osage a black locust .
-
Oh yeah, I shipped today. Wednesday Mr. _________ gets his goodies box!
I can now open my box tonite! Yay me! I can't wait to see what dear Mr. Auggie sent me!
-
Ill take that into consideration ;)
:o
-
I shipped today too. Mr. _____________ is supposed to get his goodies next Monday according to USPS.
-
Auggie sent me some antler buttons, a knapped point, some handmade fishing lures (of a design I have found to work very well on rainbow trout, I might add), a handmade knife that I suspect was once a circular saw blade and a deer antler, and an amazing rack for not only that knife but for other knives to be displayed on, and an antler piece with a leather loop thru it and no explanation of what it is for, but I figure it would work as a deer drag!
I flat made out like a bandito on this trade! Thanks Augster! Photos coming!
-
JW, I have a piece of antler with a leather loop. I use it to carry a turkey out of the woods over my back. It works great and saves me from getting torn up by spurs.
-
Shipped yesterday :)
-
Shipped this morning... Hope he likes it..
Thanks leroy
-
Seems I have been had, though not terribly. The turquoise I was going to add to my gift box, is fake. I saw a pice on edge that had been chipped. Its white in color. Dyed howlite is what it is called. Just hope the fellow who gave it to me didnt pay much for it. Now im not sure, would anybody care if they recieved imitation turquoise? The opals however are real and will be sent soon with the rest of the box.

Bummer. I wouldn't mind, since it's been discovered and disclosed
-
It wouldnt bother me any

Oh yeah! That would work, too!
-
Despite being given 30 days to move on Dec 5th, I managed to get my gift to a point where I could ship it and not be ashamed, lol.
It went out in the mail today. I did want to put more work and time into it, but I had to dismantle and move my shop over the last few weeks, and no telling how long before I can put it all back together. Anyway I have your phone number whoever you are and once I see it is delivered I plan to give you a call. Hope you like it as much as I enjoyed making it and getting it all together.

Well, I sent mine out today. It should be there wednesday or thursday. I ended up sending a deer grunt call, a few arrow, some pine pitch glue, sinew, and a christmas ornament. My victim is a knapper, so I sent the arrows with no points. I'm sure he has some points laying around waiting for some shafts. Hope he likes it all.

I shipped my gift out yesterday. It should be in ______'s hands by thursday. :)
I have some final pics but I'll wait to post them until after he receives it and maybe posts some of his own.

Ok guys, here is the list as far as I could determine of people who haven't shipped yet. A lot of you on the list have posted things like "almost ready", or "going out tomorrow" but haven't confirmed that you've shipped. If your name is on the list and you have already shipped please let either Bruce or me know so we can update the list.
If you haven't shipped, there are still 9 days left till the deadline. When you do ship, please let one of us know.

Mine was shipped and received about 2 weeks ago. I believe Auggie got it the 23rd
-
Ok. Thanks JoJo. I've updated the list.

I sent a PM to Bruce about my change of address earlier this week, but haven't heard anything back. If you have my name please don't ship it to the old one. We had problems with a @#$% Land Lord and I would worry about it being "lost". I will PM it to J05H as well so hopefully it can be updated before shipping.
Thanks guys.
Skar
Edit: Bruce PM'd me and it is all good. Please disregard, lol.

Shipped mine almost a month ago but have not heard from the recipient and can't find the tracking number to see if it was received.

ran into a few financial problems. You will get it it but I may not be able to ship until the 20th. I do apologize but they shorted me on my last paycheck! A few more items to finish off but the box is partially packed....
-
mine went in the mail yesterday afternoon, in the box is a knife forged from an old trap spring, a pair of pliers forged from an old dump rake tooth, a small utility type blade also forged from a dump rake tooth, some turkey and goose feathers, some antler buttons and a bunch of smaller chunks of wood (bacote, quilted maple, elm burl, curly maple) for tip overlays and such.

I shipped my trade package today to my victim. Poor guy!
My time was limited to make things but I managed a fire bow set and some knapped stone items, then I threw in some raw materials. Cane shafts, feathers, and sinew for error makin and a few pieces of hardwood for whatever with one being a highly figured piece of sweet gum that should make some killer knife scales. Long node bamboo and large cane pieces that would make a some flutes too.
Sorry I can't post pics cause my puter went down back before Christmas and I'm operating on a borrowed I pad that I ain't too good with. Hopefully my guy can take up my slack and post a pic or two for me, and I don't know what I'm gonna do to post pics when I receive a package, but hopefully I can con someone into helping me do it. I'll figure something out.

I finally got a day off when the knuckleheads at the post office were open, so cross my name off the list. It is scheduled to be there on Monday, which means it will be there in a week or so. I just hope he's not too disappointed. You know the feeling when you see that long package on the porch.

Ok everyone, the shipping deadline has officially passed. I've contacted everyone who hasn't shipped yet and all but one or two will be shipping tomorrow. I will continue to update the list I made a few posts back until everyone has shipped. Otherwise, I think this thread has run its course. I hope everyone had a great time with this trade, and I hope to see everyone's gifts over in the Trade Item Received thread.
-
Thanks for running a great trade.
Thanks, too, to everyone that pitched in and built the anticipation, as well as the wonderful payoffs at the end!
