This idea has been bouncing around in my head for a while and I think it's finally time to do something about it. This chunk of osage was from a stave that I gave to PatB. He cut the knot off the end and made a nice sinew backed recurve out of the stave. He saved the knot hole and gave it back to me. I should be able to follow the grain around the knot hole similar to how you do it on a bow limb. I think the handle will be just as strong as a normal one if I do it right.

I'll have to steam bend it straight after I get it roughed out.

I think this is the head that I'm going to put on it. I've got some better ones but this is the cleanest.

Cool Clint. I knew you'd find a use. It was too cool of a knot to burn. ;)
-
Can't wait to see it all put together Clint should be a interesting project
Bjrogg
-
I've been waiting to see this keep it coming buddy
-
You've got my attention! Cheers - Brendan
-
This is gonna be cool!
-
That will be very cool, can't wait to see it all finished up. :)
Pappy
-
Way Cool ! Bob
-
Good idea Clint. I have been working on a set of three hatchets also lately, they are going to be Christmas gifts for my dad and my brothers.
I really like the idea of the hole though, that's gonna be really neat
-
Another handmade original from the true Outlaw. :) Should be cool when finished Clint.
-
Looking forward to seeing this one finished.
-
Looks like it's going to turn out nice.
-
That should be a family heirloom!
-
As with all of your projects, Clint. We're waiting with great anticipation!
-
Thanks guys. It's been slow progress today. I've been doing some cleaning and other work. I did cut off some excess wood on the bandsaw.

-
Are you going to have the hole visible from the top or the side? Good luck steaming it straight. Bending around knots gives me the willies :D
-
The hole will be going through the sides of the handle. The growth rings will be going the same direction as the hatched head.
It's slowly taking shape

Looking good so far.
-
Looks good ....your going to have to start making throwing hawk handles....
DBar
-
I've made one throwing hawk handle Bill. The one I have now already has a nice handle.
I got it all squared up and then rounded the edges. It's really taking shape now. I used a scraper to remove all the file marks and smooth it out for steam bending in the morning. It feels good in the hand. I hope I don't screw it up trying to straighten it. I put a heavy coat of shellac on it as a temporary finish before the steam. I'm waiting until after I straighten to shape the head end. I want to make sure it makes it before I put in all that work to get a good fit.

I hope you guys don't mind me posting projects like this. Doing a build-a-long and posting pictures motivates me to get things finished.
-
Love it.... you know we all love pictures.............:)
I'd steam that sucker for at least a hour...and it may take a few sessions..
-
An hour is what I was thinking Bill. The flat top on my little wood stove will finally come in handy tomorrow morning.
-
That sounds good....but I really think is going to take a couple of sessions...just don't force it. But hell I know you'll do fine.
-
I would soak it in water for at least a day before steaming it
-
Dude! That is just KNOT right!
-
Lookin' sweet! This is gonna be nice. - brendan
-
Looking good Clint, an of course we don't mind a build along, if fact as for me I love them. Making handles are lots of fun, time can really get away from you while working on them. ;)
Pappy
-
I got it steaming.

Kevin
He needs to make one like this for your primitive camp outs.
-
After an hour of steaming it I chose the wrong type of clamp and didn't get it bent quick enough. I grabbed a heat gun and slowly bent it a little farther than I needed to. I'm expecting it to spring back a little bit when I take the clamp off. The knot didn't straighten out much. Most of the bend happened just above it. As long as it lines up I think it will work. I didn't hear any cracks or pops when I bent it. I think it's going to work.

You should just set up a web cam in your shop and live stream what you do. I'm excited to see this through.
-
Clint, that handle would go well with a broad hatchet for hewing logs with that offset handle.
-
^^^
I was thinking the same thing.
-
I only have one hewing hatchet and it already has a good handle.
-
Look at the bow in that 2x4
-

There ya go! ;)
That could be said for a bunch of these guys.
-
Not an usual handle for that hatchet, I'm following Clint!
-
Very cool build along Clint!
holeinthebowchuck would be envious.
Kevin
Ol' Chuck would appreciate it, I just bet!
Hey, Clint? Where have we seen that unusual and fascinating woodburner before?
-
Looks like it's gonna be a gooder Clint! Can't wait to see er done. dp
-
Hey, Clint? Where have we seen that unusual and fascinating woodburner before?
That thing works great JW. It's saving me on my electric bill. On really cold days it would take 2 space heaters to keep my shop warm.
-
It didn't spring back as much as I was expecting. I hit it with the heat gun and just let it relax a little at the bend. I'm going to call it good enough. It's got a little hump where the knot is but the head lines up with the grip. I took a few practice swings and it feels like its in line. I won't be able to finish it up until the weekend.
(http://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv22/Outlawstaves/20161207_192747_zpshrhaqrk9.jpg) (http://s666.photobucket.com/user/Outlawstaves/media/20161207_192747_zpshrhaqrk9.jpg.html)
-
Just like with bows and arrows if the head and handle line up what's in between can be character. Pearlie owns the rest of that stave now.
-
So that's the bow you made from it. I'm glad I got to deliver it to him. It's funny all the trading and gifting that we all do. It would be hard to keep track of where everything ends up.
-
Yeah, most of what we do here on PA has lots of stuff from others in it, like tip overlays, skin, sinew, rawhide, wood or bamboo backings, handle risers hatchets or hatchet handles. The trade routes of the world continue. ;) ...and our family seasons! 8)
-
+1 on Pat's sentiments!
-
OK Clint how is this going ? can't wait to see it all finished up. You know me, I love hatchets and ax's almost as much as knives. ;) :)
Pappy
-
I haven't been able to work on it since the last update. I'm going to get back on it today.
-
I'm taking it very slow trying to get a good fit in the eye of the head.

Really cool Clint, you'll be able to hang that one on a nail. Amazing what that mind of yours comes up with.
Bjrogg
-
That's turning out great!
DBar
-
Oh yeah, that thing is coming along great. Nice clean hatchet head too
-
I think I got a decent fit on the head. I still need to thin down the handle and sand it before I mount it. That will have to wait until my next day off work. The small draw knife worked good for roughing out the eye.

That turned out really nice Clint. Did you polish out the head or was it already that shiny.
-
I bought it like that. Somebody did a good job cleaning it up.
-
Really cool Clint
-
I haven't been able to work on it since the last update.
I bet the chickens are happy >:D
Zuma
-
No chickens here Zuma.
I just realized today that this piece of osage is from the monster osage tree. That will add a little extra mojo.
-
Nice fit, looking very good. ;)
Pappy
-
Man - I'm really liken that ! Bob
-
That's going to look awesome!
-
Don't take it to Marshall. Paul may abscond with it!
-
Now your just showing off ;D
-
Just saw this thread now, great build along Clint.
I have a few axe heads that need to handles, I should really do the same
-
Don't take it to Marshall. Paul may abscond with it!
I'm more worried about hole in the bow Chuck at the Classic
-
Ya Chuck will love it for sure. ;) Nice Job Clint. :)
Pappy
-
It's looking awesome!
-
I've been re-profiling and carving handles for axes, hatchets, and tools for years. This is fantastic work. Nice job!
-
That is some nice work. Great looking hatchet handle. Excellent work. Two thumbs up.
-
Nicely done! Sometimes you really piss me off :)
-
Sorry Matt :)
I did some finish shaping and smoothed it out. It's ready for sanding. I cut the tongue down, rounded it over a little, and made a center cut 2/3 of the length. I cut a wedge from a piece of walnut. I'm going to sand it after lunch and then mount the head on it.

I drove the wedge in as far as I could. I gave it a few more wacks and it broke off flush. The head feels solid. I hope it holds. I'll post some finished pictures when I'm done putting the tung oil on it.

600 grit . . . WOW! It does look nice, sir.

Good eye. It's still deer season here. I wear orange whenever I go in the woods during any gun season.
-
You did a great job Clint. That's a special hatchet. 8)
-
That finished up sweet Clint
-
Looks Great Clint!
Ya gotta love that osage!
Kevin
-
That looks awesome Clint! Great work for sure!
And good on you for wearing your orange in the field. I see a lot of people that don't just because they are not hunting.

Don't forget inhaling all of that osage dust, It's gotta have some affect.
Kevin
-
Man, that's Sweet! I want one, now.
-
That's fantastic! How does it swing?
-
Hey that's super nice!!! Can you get tge Osage to stay yellow???
-
That's fantastic! How does it swing?
Most likely Hetro.
It is a perfect combination of male and female
tied together with strength and beauty.
Zuma
-
It feels like a normal hatchet when I swing it. It's lined up good. The osage will darken over time as its exposed to sunlight.

Or across campfires..

That's pretty cool Clint!

Clint I will have to say you meet the high expectations I have learned to expect from you on that project,WOW that is as they say WAY COOL. ;) :) :)
Pappy

Love the idea of this, and you executed it to perfection. Well done Clint
-
Clint somehow in my busyness I missed this

but only problem is now I have one more prodgect to add to a very long list
betcha it gets moved to the top faster than some others
good job my friend
-
Awesome work!

Looks great. I can't wait for the next idea to hatch.

Very cool Clint!
