Title: Handle wraps.
Post by: ibuildforhim on February 11, 2011, 07:25:50 pm

Strunk buildalongs are taboo.  You must be sworn into the secret society...or something like that ::)  Primitve archers are generally the most sharing and open with their techniques and know how...A select few aren't.

The Strunk wrap is highly over-rated.  Right Adam? :P  >:D

Just do a google search for it.  It's probably easier to find a picture than to try to describe it.

John Strunk designed the handle wrap style and if he doesnt want it posted all over the internet thats his buisness thats my opinion. I live in the same town as john and have worked with him on a few different bows and have just hung out and bugged him on multiple occasions he is more than willing to share his handle wrap one on one and others who know how to do it will likely share it one on one or through pm but that is just Johns wishes Maybe if you e mail him at his buisness (Spirit Longbows) he will help you out. I still havent learned the strunk style wrap because I prefer to personalize my bows with my own wrap, I have done a similar style where I just wrapped around the leather wrap with leather lace for extra grip.

NTD "Primitve archers are generally the most sharing and open with their techniques and know how...A select few aren't." It seems to me you are insinuating John is a select few who doesnt like to share his methods or techniqes with the Primitive Archery world, to me if this is what you are insinuating that is just rediculus ::), and im sure you own TBB vol 1 John shares a wealth of info to all. Im sure he has his reasoning for not shareing his handle wrap with everyone on the internet community but he really isnt a Internet kinda guy, right or wrong thats his right IMO. Im NOT trying to start an argument here I have just gotten to know John very well and I know he isnt greedy about shareing info because he has literally awnsered mine and many other peoples hundreds of questions time and time again and in my case every time I go over to hang out or work with him I ask about 1000 questions non stop the whole time im there and he has never acted irritated or bugged by my constant questions one on top of another, I would over load and freak out on me if I was him lol ;D

To me it seems rather that mister Strunk doesn't like thew internet to much, and I can very well understand that.

Guys, lets not forget that our art is under attack every day by more modern day tech. I really started building these bows because I love trditional archery and I wanted to pass on something to my son that he couldnt forget. I have learned alot from this site and I dont think there are very many guys trying to profit off these ideas, I know im not. Enjoy building wooden bows, its not a competition. Paul

The ego of an individual to believe they can keep a handle wrap style to themself must be astounding....I'm with Nate, most people relish at the opportunity to share their knowledge, others are selfish  ???

John Strunk does share his info with others! I dont see where you get off calling someone selfish you have never even met based on the fact they dont wish the handle wrap style THEY MADE UP, on the internet. That is rediculus! is there a rule saying if you are a bowyer you have to share every thing you have ever learned through the years of bow building or you are selfish? John Strunk has GIVIN away more bows than most have ever built or some maybe even seen, and shared info with other bowyers and passed on bow building to high school kids as a shop teacher where he retired but while he worked there he has shown more people than most the art of bow building. I am going to have to unsubscribe to this thread due to the disrespect and rudeness of the comments that have been made about one of the bowyers who played a big part in bringing the skill of building stick bows back. Maybe you should give bowyers bible vol 3 chapt.13 passing it on another read and remember your calling one of the greats selfish and he is far from that  ;)

dont know the guy (strunk)
cant say i even know what his wrap looks like
however if he truly did come up with a certain style
and was the exclusive user and there fore it became his "known trade mark"
i dont see a problem with him not wanting it published on the internet
especially if has taught others how to do it nad gave them permission to pass it on on a one on one level

i have a lot of tricks ive learned over the years as an auto tech to make my job easier
do i tell all the newbies how i do things to make myself faster/better
hell no,let them learn
i do give advise when asked and thats how i keep it
one on one  ;)

Yes, me too!

Strunk even shares knowledge in the TBB (...and honestly you don't believe he was given much money for his article, do you!?) the wrap is pictured in detail in the TBB and in many threads by Gordon and others, so if you care to know how to make it go visit Strunk, or go figure it out yourself by trail and error. What's the big deal?

I come back to this site after many years absence and this is one of the first topics I look at.  Feels lick I'm on the Leatherwall.  I don't remember it being like this in the past.  Will have to give some thought about staying.  Just being my own selfish self.

The difference is that here, threads like this are a rarity, not the majority (unless you hang out in the war bow forums :)

You picked a bad thread to make a first impression.  This group of folks here is one of the finest you'll have the privilege of knowing, if you give them a chance.
Everyone has bad days where they say things that are probably unnecessary.  I chose not to focus on that.
