Title: Just finished
Post by: stuckinthemud on May 05, 2018, 10:52:19 am
Hi guys, this one's just finished, three flowers (daffodils) for three siblings and a ball in a cage with a twisted stem.  The client was very specific, also it had to be in a dark timber so it's in recycled mahogany, yuck, horrible to work with. It took me a long time to find a way to design the ball and cage into a spoon with flowers but hopefully  they'll like it

Teriffic carving, bet that took a lot of re-honing!

yeh it did!  The wood also proved to be very prone to splitting so I hard to carve a little more 'chunky' than I would have liked too.

Walnut is a bit of a bear to carve also, unless it is not seasoned.  Unseasoned apple, peach, or cherry would be a better choice, I think.

I think Zuma is looking at dark woods, but while walnut is not nice to carve as it's so hard, it has two other things against it; it's very expensive and I haven't got any :-)

Very nice! The ball in the cage is the number of children they want, at least that's what it represents in Welsh Love spoons.

True, but it is also a love kept safe, as in this spoon.  The full symbol list is
Spoon bowl - love that is deep and wide - very contentious as this is a modern interpretation of a symbol millennia old, more likely is the spoon as the symbol of the woman in charge of the hearth and home, but the true meaning is lost.
Stem with a twist - growing together
Ball and cage - love held safe
Foliage - affection
Daffodils -  Wales
Three Flowers - three siblings

Looks and sounds like a Celtic thing to mo(me)!  We tend to. See the esoteric side of things :' >:D!  Neat carving and very symbolic!
