Title: Sinew And Rattler Backed Paddle Bow
Post by: El Destructo on April 20, 2008, 03:25:49 pm
Well when I posted the Knife Pictures of the Cholla and Flint Knife....everyone wanted to know more about the Little Bow in the Background...Well here it is...... I had run out of Sinew for my Cupids Bod....and this one was in the Corner already Sinewed last fall...so I have been working on it....It's 43 inches long..Damn it ....it's too big to be in the Back Pack Bow Contest... ::) ::)

This Paddle Bow Wannabe is 1 7/8 inches wide....1 1/4 inches at the Handle....it's made of Ash...not Yew....cant afford Yew!! I cut and flipped the nocks...and sinewed them back with three layers of Leg Tendon...The I Sinew Backed the whole Bow with 3 layers of Leg Tendon and then 1 layer of Elk Back Sinew...then I re wrapped the top 2 inches horizontal to the Length of the Bow to tie in the Sinew on the Bent Tips for added strength..... I backed it with one Prairie Rattler and made a Wrapped Grip out of Rawhide and Hide Glued it down.

I have it tillered at a 3 1/2" Brace Height right now to 17 inches at 50 Pounds....I have some more work to do on the Tiller though....I think that the Left Limb in the Picture is still a Bit Stiff at Mid Limb....being this Short...I opted to make this a Working Handled Bow....so I could utilize every inch of it ....and get a Draw length I could live with!!

Once I get the Tiller nailed....I am going to add some Fur around the Tips and around the rawhide Grip....and make either a Gut or Sinew String for it too....this is going to be an Awesome Little Brush Bow!!

Thanks David...but I just come in from Shooting it....and I am going to have to do something with the Rawhide Handle though....it is really noisy....I guess I am going to have to put some Mink or Muskrat Fur on the Handle to make it quieter!!!

that's very similar to one I have roughed out,, made of eastern red cedar sapwood. mine won't have bent nocks like that but it is a cool feature.
just need to get off my lazy butt and sinew back it.

OK....I'll tell ya....first of all you make the Tips like a regular Pin Nock....but longer....about 1 1/2"...then you take your trusty Dremel Tool with a Cutting Wheel....or a small Coping Saw....or of you want to go totally Primal...get yer Flint Blade you traded with Cowboy  for....and cut about 2/3rds of the way through each one....at the Base of the Pin Nock....you make a wedged shape cut...so next step is to get your Sinew and Hide Glue ready.....now heat you tips one at a time...when you get it nice and hot...and bendy....put some Hide Glue in the notch...and quickly push it down on a Hard Surface to bend it till the Gap is closed....now if you didn't out think me here....and build a Jig to hold it in Place....then you have to hang on to it till it cools....then take your Sinew (4" long pieces)...dip it in your Hide Glue...and wrap the Tip lengthwise from the belly about a quarter of an inch below the nock...up and over...do this again ...so that you have at least 2...I like 3 layers going vertical....then go back and do the same again ....but this time Horizontally at the Base of the Nock...to cover all of the Overlapping Fibers from the Vertical Lays....do this at least twice also...repeat for the other Nock.....simple ....Huh!!!!

p.s. I made a Jig that would hold the nock in its bent form till it cooled....just used a scrap of red oak board...cut a 45* notch in it....and used a Jorgenson clamp to hold it down till it cooled and the Hide Glue set up good

Very nice bow El.destructo, Those tips are sweet and the skins really show off the diamond pattern with that much surface area. As someone said earlier that would be a great ambush bow for hunting on the ground in dense cover ;D  Great job should be a strong runner for BOM  ;)   Keenan

OK Don....here She is........Finally got Her done......56 pounds at 20 inches of Draw....... You have to Pinch Grip it to shoot it right....and it is very accurate to about 10 yards....or at least I am accurate with it to that distance!!!!!...but that Pinch Grip is a Beast to learn!! I used some Bobcat Fur Scraps around the Tips and Grip....and made a nice Sinew String for it too....this is a really nice Bow ....I don't know how much nicer it could have turned out ....

It was a Windfall Tree Branch to begin with....chopped off with an Axe.....then it was all scraped with a homemade Flint Scraper.....Tips cut in with a Pocket Knife.....Sinewed with Tendons I collected....hammered out....and mixed with Homemade Hide Glue that my Wife bitched about the whole time it was cooking!!! I kind of like the Smell of it cooking down....don't you all?? I killed the Snakes....cleaned and dried them..... the cat Fur is Scraps from my Neighbors Bobcat Wallhanging He had made.... This Sinew String was the first I ever built....I was inspired by a thread on Squirrel Rawhide String....We all know what I think of killing Squirrels ....don't we Coo-Wah-Cho-Bee??? Well enough rambling.....What do you think....Honestly ....I want to know.... you cant hurt this old Buggers feeling....I don't wear mine on my Shirtsleeve!!

Thanks Hawk...I tried to do this Bow Justice in every way....

Now you have to take them with a Grain of Salt.....Hawk......sometimes the Whole Shaker is needed....aint just You..... I've been getting bashed and Edited too.....don't let them get to you.... I wont let a few Hardnoses ( another nice way of putting things) bring down what I think of Primitive Archery and Hunting.... I am always willing to help anyone learn and get into this Sport....but You also must pull straight with this Bunch...They are mostly Good People.... with a few exceptions here and there....

They expect to be treated truthfully and respectfully and not fibbed to( gotta watch my Words).....or Smoke and Mirrors....Remember....People will remember the one untruth or mistake you make....and forget all of the other good a person has done...it's just the Human way......So live and learn

That is a nice lookin bow. I love paddle bows.
All right, you said we can't hurt your feelings, so here goes. From the looks of it, I think the tiller of it should bend a little more in the limbs in general, and not so much in the handle area. A full draw picture would help, though (hint, hint ;)).
I still like it a lot. :)

Yeah ....It does bend a little bit too much in the Handle....I didn't want to lose any more Poundage ...and I want to shoot it in a bit more too....but none of this can be done till the Sinew is totally dry again after getting the Skins  Hide Glued on.... The Tiller looked a lot different before I put the Snake Skins on.....As for Full Draw.... the Tiller Stick Picture with the Elliptical Drawing is at full Draw....20 inches....I will try to get My Wife to take a Picture of Me Drawing it....when She gets off of Night Shift

that is a beautiful little bow!
frank

ps: i work with fur in a similar way on my dreamcatchers a lot.
so here is a little tip: wrap on the fur first and fix it, THAN wrap on the leather of your handle and run it over the edge of the fur so it actually presses down some of the hair; that looks really good, since there won't be a gap between handle and application, and i'm sure it'll be more durable, too!

Hey....thanks Frank for the helpful Hint....I would have never thought of that.....I will do that next time....I do believe that this is a done deal....since this is Rawhide....and it is set in place with Hide Glue!! So I will live and Learn...and remember your advice for my next Bow....which isn't too far away!!!

I was impressed.....if I can ever get off on a Day that My Wife is Home too....I will have Her snap a Picture of Me drawing it ....instead of just the Tiller Stick at full Draw...

Dana....
Thanks Dana.....it's a Little Stiff at Midlimb....but this Stave had Beetles and there are tunnels(small ones) all over it....thats Why I backed it to begin with....I am going to shoot it in for a while and then maybe....just maybe I will scrape a little off the Midlimbs.....but it really shoots great the way it is right now...
As for the Chicken Legs....You have to be off when the Sun is out to get a Tan!!!! Plus I was here for two weeks back 26 years ago....and ended up in the Hospital with Heat Stroke....3 days in Intensive Care and 4 more to recuperate....so I don't just go out to sit around in this Sun....it's a Killer here.....I go out long enough to do what I need to do....and get back in the A/C!!!!

David....
I am not going to waste my time on something like that....there is no way that I can make a Bow that would be worth carrying at a Poundage worth having that would be that Short and not Backed....so good luck to all involved.....I will just sit this one out

Redwasp.....There is no way that you can hold this Little Monster at full Draw for a Picture using the Pinch Grip!!!!! This is a Three finger European Grip....I shoot it using a Pinch Grip ....but you just pinch the String and draw until you cant hold it and let it go....there is no Holding it!!!

The Tips on this Bow you were asking about were cut...damned near all the way through from the back to the Belly with a Triangle File...then I boiled them...and bent them over till they touched....Glued them....I then wrapped Sinew soaked in Hide Glue lengthwise over the Tips,,,and then a course around the Limb...just below the Nock...I did this with three Layers total to make sure that there was enough strength...it's a Lot of Work....but that is the way the Hupa Indians made theirs

Sorry People,  for reasons beyond my control I am not able to take photos of Native American Bows And Arrows,Arrow heads  At Clark Museum In Eureka California Because of Ceremonial reasons.
You can always Come to Humboldt county to view these relics in there cases.
I Don't understand if they are so Ceremonial, why aren't they on the Reservation. Another reason to be dissapointed in  Red Tape. >:(
