Hey fellas,
Please send me a PM if you plan on building a bow for the raffle from the elm we cut during last years event. I want to get a close enough count so I can make a few decisions for the raffle process.
Thanks!
-
Not sure yet, mine has went all wonkey , not sure if it is going to work out. I will know when I get in the mood to work on it again, it has flush strayed me pretty good. Pappy
-
I got a kids bow done. Approximately 15@ 18. Working on a quiver and some arrows to make it a complete setup. My piece of wood was questionable also so I took the high road and made a kids bow
-
I think that's is what it's all about Paul....making something with what you have......
I'd be proud if one of my grand kids had that bow setup......
DBar
-
I have one ready Chris.
-
I plan on cutting mine down a bit and go for a 50@26 or so and see if I can make it work. It was a very narrow piece and had a few issues so had to make it narrower than I wanted and it is just not very stable as it is now. I will see if I can get it worked out, if not I will donate something, probably Osage. :)
Pappy
-
Mine is the same way Pappy. I cut a small pole so by the time I make some shoulders I will be near 1 5/8" wide. I'm shooting for something around 40-45 @ 28. That way it fits a bunch of shooters. Looking like it'll be around 63-64 ntn.
-
I have one ready Chris.
I knew you would my friend. Id love to have no less than five bows on the raffle table. I think that should be easy enough between all of us.
-
Dang fellas, we sure cut a lot of elm off club grounds to have so few responses. I hope the wood is used to the clubs benefit and not for our personal uses. At least one bow worth anyhow.
As of now I have Greg for one, Pauly for one and a possible second (imagine that), and me for one. I believe at least 8 or 10 of us cut wood last year.
-
Matt's is in my hot box and looks like it is ready to tiller, he plans on working on it when he comes down to the IBO World in July and take it home then. I cut mine down to 61 last evening and put on some overlays on it, I will see how it goes, although I wasn't in on the cutting I did get a piece so I will see if I can get a worthy bow from it, if not sorry, it was a small piece. :)
Pappy
-
I feel like its my responsibility to see this through considering I started it and asked the club for permission to cut a few trees. My "name" is all over it and I tend to be proud of things with my name on them.
-
I'd talked to nakedfeet at Marshall, and I want to say he was working on one, but don't hold me to that.
-
I think you're right J-Syn.
-
I understand that Pearl. :)
Pappy
-
I'm in Drums...
-
I knew you would me my friend, thank you.
-
If things go ok I will have 2, we will see after I take them out of the hot box and finish the tillering, still seems a little wet for some reason but I am not use to Elm so it may just be the way it is. :-\
Pappy
-
Elm often feels that way pappy, but if you are hot-boxing them, they are dry. I got mine tempered and shaped last night. Ill add over lays and get it tillered this week. I MAY try a small 30" bow from one of my cut offs.
-
I got mine shooting over the weekend. I started with a 2" (or so) sapling and got all I could from it. I'm sitting at 33 @ 26 now. Its a nice bow, but I would have liked more weight. Like 40# @ 26. I may try to add a bit of early reflex and see what I can gain. All in all, I'm happy with it.
-
I left my first Elm blank at the Classic. I was going to work on it down there. I believe maybe that I filed string grooves it. I put it in the hotbox and forgot it was there, come time to pack up and come home. So it's been down there Since May. It was an adult sized, no frills longbow. I've commandeered a taxi ride home for it, after the IBO.
As a contingency, I decided to make two more. I'm working on a kid's bow that I've got to a long string, limbs balanced, tiller okay, just need to reduce some weight. The second is a plains style short draw that I just heated up on the caul, last night. I think I'll try to get a bit fancy with that one, time permitting.
Oh Drums, what variety of Elm is that? Do you know?
-
Good news Matt! Im 99% sure it American elm, but I didn't look close enough at the leaves.
-
Hey Matt,
Do you want me to pick up your Elm for you this weekend at Twin Oaks?
Rocky
-
Wish I was going, but have to do the family thing. I didn't know you were going. Gary Davis is picking it up for me. Thank you, anyways. Have fun!
-
Picking up 20 Rhinehart targets used for the IBO from Twin Oaks. You guys can put some holes in them with your elm bows in a couple of weeks!
-
Sounds great, Rocky! Looking forward to seeing you in a few weeks.
-
FYI my shoulder is getting stronger and I'm hoping I can shoot in the Green Bow Challenge. And this year's Great Northern Bow raffle is for a Lil Creep with GREEN glass, courtesy of Jerry Brumm, and a Great Northern Quiver from Bob. We love those guys at PRRC! Hopefully there will be another entry in the Green Bow Challenge next year!
-
Got mine in the sealing process now. I'm going ALL out female on this one. So guys make sure the wife, girlfriend, daughter, granddaughter or daughter in law puts some tickets in. Its 63" 33 @ 26, contoured grip/shelf and shoots sweet. White leather grip wrap, white rabbit fur silencers, pink string and a few pink beads off the bottom of the grip stitching. Its all girl and ready for action :)
-
Cool Chris. Always lots of ladies in attendance at the elm hall shoot, should be a lot of interest in a hand made ladies bow.

I was thinking maybe if I had some pictures the wife might want a raffle ticket. Do you know the cost of tickets yet? Are all the bows going to be in the same raffle?
-
Is it an off the handle? She's a lefty
-
Here's what I got going so far. 1 that's 45 to 50 at 28 and the little guy is about 15 at 18
-
Those look real nice Pauly
-
Well done Paul ! Bob

BJ, I plan to have all the bows laid out on tables with a coffee can next to each. Put a ticket(s) in the can of the bow(s) you prefer. I will draw one winner from each can after Saturdays dinner. I haven't settled on cost per ticket. It will be affordable for all to buy, that's for sure. There will also be a number by each bow. Folks will have a chance to vote for their favorite by simply writing its number down and dropping it in another coffee can. Should be fun handing out so many bows while raising some money for the club.

I triple dog dare you, Bill :)
-
I heat treated a kid's bow, yesterday. It's coming in at 25# @ 20". I'm thinking of reducing it to 20 pounds. Opinions?
-
I think knocking a few off will be better, Matt. 18-20 @ 20 is usually a good number for kiddo's. That just one opinion.
-
That's what I recall, Drums. I used to have a piece of paper (cheat sheet) that I made years ago for kids, ladies, etc. tacked up above my workbench. Somehow, it disappeared.

Here is where I am. I need to wax it up good and add a grip.
-
Nice job with that small diameter, Drums. I sure like the handle section.
-
Thanks Matt. It was tough getting weight from it.
Looks like we are going to have a plaque made to add a winning name to each year. Which means we can snip a few more trees this year and do it all again in 2017 :). We can try to switch species for 2017 if you guys want to.
-
Pearl .........really like the looks of the fades..Cool
-
Looks cool Chris, like that your have some heartwood remaining at the handle and fades.
-
man, all these bows look sweet. can't wait for the drawing... fingers crossed. Bill, i quadruple dog dare ya and Mike too. would love to see you fella's again. countin the days.
-
I'll participate Chris. I'm starting to like working with this Elm. My vote stays with it.
-
Elm is probably the best of the bow woods out there, Matt. I have spied some HHB, but not much and not that great quality wise. Most all of the maple is soft and no good for bows.
-
I won't be able to make a bow out of the elm stave I got last year yet. I have some water damage I am trying to repair in my trailer before then so I will be busy with that. I hope to be able to finish my daughters new surprise bow before then but, I am having doubts. This summer has been really busy. See you guys in a couple weeks.
-
Pearl I will let you know after this weekend, having lots of trouble with these and not sure how they are going to work out, don't want to let you down but ant donating a piece of crap either. >:(
Pappy
-
So sorry guys to let you down, but these just ant going to work out. I will be bringing some gifts for the club to make some money off of but won't be a bow. >:( See ya in a few days. :)
Pappy
-
Crap happens, see you in a week or so pappy.
-
Got the quiver made for my kid bow set. Commercial brain tan with a dogwood support. Beaver fur collar. Including a 1/2 doz arrows. I didn't make the arrows....couldn't beat the price. Bow is right around 15@18. My daughter wanted ro model it 8)
-
That is going to be one sweet raffle table. Great job guys.
-
Does the little girl go with the package? :)
-
She's all smiles there but trust me that's not all the time
-
I wonder how many frogs she can get in that quiver? What a cutie Paul
-
Cute pic of your girl, Paulie.
I'm have to apply a finish to one of the bows and am final tillering the 2nd bow. Have a 1/2 doz arrows started for the 1st bow.
-
You guys are going above and beyond with these bows. It means a lot to me.
-
Thats a sweet set Paul, perfect for a young archer. Nina's too cute in that pic, the arrow pattern t-shirt is perfect.
-
Nicely done Paul - Cute Daughter also ! See You soon - Bob.
-
Cuite little girl and very nice quiver, someone will love that. Pappy
-
Great stuff guys !
-
Hope this will help make me letting yall down on the bow, :( sorry. Some other stuff will have to do. ;)
Pappy
-
It all helps the club pappy! I will be putting some tickets on the powder horns, very cool. See you soon my friend.
-
Putting the finishing touches on 2 kids bows, tonight, after work.
-
How many you donating Matty? I just need to know for a coffee can count. I have six cans now.
-
Two kids' bows, Drums.
-
Cool! Looks like we have three kids bows, one ladies bow and two men's bows :) I really like that ratio.
THANKS FELLAS!
-
Finished the bows, last night. Working on arrows, now. Brought them to work to fletch. Running out of time, otherwise. Leaving for Elm Hall tomorrow after work.
-
Good work Matt! I decided to take Thursday off as well. Heck with it, that's what vacation time is for.
-
Great! Looking forward to seeing you there.
-
I might, maybe, have one done before I get down there. Nothin' fancy, but hopefully a shooter. If I get the chance to come down Thursday night I might be able to finish it up down there. Once a procrastinator, always a procrastinator.
Pearl, (because I'm too busy/lazy at the moment to look through the rest of the thread) what are the details about how the giveaway/raffling will go? Is it going to be a Saturday thing?
-
Tony I plan to have all the bows laid out on tables with a coffee can next to each. Put a ticket(s) in the can of the bow(s) you prefer. The bowyer will draw one winner from each can after Saturdays dinner. I haven't settled on cost per ticket. It will be affordable for all to buy, that's for sure.
-
Hey fellas, hate to say it, but I dont think Im going to be able to make it there this year. I just have way too much going on right now as well as another trip two weeks later and I have to really pick and choose my vacation days. Sorry Y'all, wish I could have made this one. :-[
-
Gonna miss you, Cody. We understand though. Unfortunately, work does come first sometimes. Take care and say Hi to the kinfolk.
-
Bummer Cody. I'm glad I got to run into you at Marshall this spring. Get that chore list cut down, wouldya'?
-
I have a couple of late breaking developments to report.
The first bow I made and labeled as 47.5# is actually only 32# @ 26 so I guess we have another lighter draw for a lady, teen or man who likes a lower draw weight. Not sure how that happened but I strung it up today after it sitting around for months and noticed it didn't feel as heavy as I had it labeled. :o a mystery to me but I put it in the scale and 32# it is.
I finished another one though from the other half of the same elm tree and it came in at 40# @ 26" so I'll have two bows for the raffle table.
Leaving in the morning, see you folks soon.
Will miss seeing you there Cody, we'll have to get together soon at home.
-
I almost forgot to get some shots of mine before I put it up on the table, but I was able to quickly snap a few.

About as simple as they come, but that's the way I do 'em.
Ended up about 68" nock-to-nock and 35#@28", holding a touch of mild reflex still, mostly at the tips. About 4 inches taller than the sweet old lady that's going to be shooting it, who was super excited about it. Wish I could have taken more time on it, but knowing she's happy with it is all I need to know. Only the third bow of mine to make it into someone else's hands. I hope she really enjoys it.
-
That's was a very good looking bow.............
DBar
-
We sold 349 tickets. Thanks for the hard work guys, the club benefited nicely.
-
Tony,i know i told ya but that bow is sweet.
-
All of the bowyers and others that donated items did a great job. I wasn't lucky enough to win anything but, there were some excited people there for sure. Hope you guys make this an annual tradition. It was neat.
David
-
God willing, it will happen every year David. Pauly, me and Mike all cut some for next year. My chunk is peeled and relaxing in the shop until next June.
-
I didn't cut any. Luckily, I have a piece or two left in my shop from last year.
-
I think you might have a chunk in pappys hot box, Matt? ;)
