Short version: I shot my first deer yesterday afternoon. This is my first with any equipment. It was a button buck taken with a bow that I made from a KnightD blank (Knight train) and a tonkin arrow that I made (one of the ones that I posted a bit back). I shot it at about 10yds from a tree stand. I hit a bit far back in the liver but it was quartering away so it hit the lungs and clipped the heart. It only went about 25 yds from where I shot it. I'll try to get a pic up if I can figure out how to get it off my friends camera.
Long version: I got in the tree about 4 PM. Nothing until about 5:30 then I heard a bunch of crashing on my upwind side. 5 deer came in including a big doe, her two fawns (just out of spots). A button buck and a smaller doe about 1 1/2 yrs old. The big doe gave me a perfect shot but I couldn't do it. I guess I'm too soft, just couldn't shoot her with her kids watching. :-\ So she got a bit downwind of me and knew something was up. She was looking in all the trees but never really got a fix on me so they all eventually took off. Not really busted, no snorting or stomping but they just all got wary and wandered off. Then I was pissed at myself for not taking the shot. About 10 minutes later a Northern Harrier (small hawk) landed in a dead white oak about 6 ft away from me and just stared right at me. It was the coolest thing. We looked at each other for about 2 mins or so, then he took off peacefully. I was thinking "what a great night, who cares if I even get a deer at this point". No sooner than he took off I heard some movement behind me. I slowly peaked around and it was a 6 pt, with two button bucks. The 6 pt never gave me a safe shot so as soon as one of the other ones gave me a clean shot I took it. It was quartering away about 10ys or so. When I hit it I though "OH S#*t. I just shot a deer. They all took off and eventually the 6 and the other button came right past my tree going back to where they came from. I sat and waited for what seemed like a lifetime. About 20 mins later I got out of the tree walked to where I though it was. And much to my amazement, there it was about 25 yds or so from where I shot it. I ended up clipping the liver, going through the lungs, and clipping the heart. I swear that hawk was telling me something. ;) Thanks to all, for sharing their knowledge.

Cool story Rick. I am glad you had such a great hunt. And your first deer with primitive bow, it probably can't get much better. Enjoy your steaks!

Ask the Koreans or Chineese....they are still the Top Dog Eaters in the World! Must not be bad....or they are really Hungry!!
The Plains Indian purposely fattened up their Dogs for a Reserve Food Supply for Hard Times... So by Late Winter when supplies of Veggies were gone or spoiled and Meat was getting sparse....Here Doggie Doggie......... >:D Among the Tribes that ate Dog were Souix... Omaha...Chippewa...Cheyenne...Pawnee....Arikara....Hidatsa ..... Assiniboin...and Yokut.....so even here in American....Dog was on the Menu too........... ;D
Oh....Good Shooting Rick....welcome to the Club now......... ;D

Awesome!great job.Lloyd

hey...post some damn pics!!

Rick,
Awesome story, man. I'm happy for ya and also commend you on not sticking the doe with her children watching. And I believe you were rewarded nicely for it. I also agree about the hawk. Always listen to the animals and never doubt what you feel when you see them, especially when they stare peacefully at you. You hunted the way a person ought to and it was your first primitive deer kill at that. Pictures or not, this hunt was perfect!
-
Thanks guys for all the kind words. The hawk was really something special. I can put pics up off of my wifes camera, but these are coming from email via my friends phone camera. So the wifey will have to help me with this one. (way beyond my capabilities).
nocams- I used a Zwikey? I think, They are green two blade heads. Next year I hope to use some stone points, but I have a way to go on my knapping skills. I want to make sure they are up to the task of killing cleanly. So I really need to keep chipping.
-
Rick , Congradulations sounds as if you had a great hunt, an the hawk spirit was great. I try really hard to listen to my instincts an it sure doesn,t hurt when you have a helper like the hawk. Later Bob

a big congrats man, and sounds like one of those hunts that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. one of those things that shows old suspicions can sometimes be true.

nice buck man! i wish i had some that nice to shoot at. lol
-
great hunt rick did you let out the rebel yell? personally I got my first PA doe monday columbus day she had two little ones just out of spots watched them for 15 min. at first I wasnt going to shoot but after watching they were quite independent and browsing she left them and I could have dropped an acorn straight down under my stand and hit her not a good angle for the shot she walked off and presented me two more shots at her and I just had to take the shot. 70lb osage and obsidian tipped ramin complete pass though. ran 70 yards, and as I approached her her two little ones were still hanging around but bolted at the sound of me approaching. Did I feel bad? Not a bit, Me and my fanily will enjoy the harvest for a while. First deer in 5 years.
-
Outstanding Rick, congrat's ;)!!
-
Redwasp congrats. ;D Sounds like she wanted to be dinner ;) I know these young ones would have been fine without her, but I'm a bit of a softee I guess. And yes I did let out quite a yell.
-
Good story and good hunt Congrats!!!!!!!!!!! I had a Coopers hawk do that to me while hunting Bear with my long bow in Upper Ontario back in 1986 the spirit of that hawk jinxed me then as the only one to get a bear was the only one of us using a Compound Glad yrou s turned out different . Dan
-
good hunt, congrats. Thats the kind of story I never get tired of hearing....brokenhand....Aho.
-
Congratulations, Rick! Those knotheads are some mighty fine eating, too. Looks like your knotheads up there are about the size of our grown does here.
-
Great job Rick! I bet you're in the "minority" among Long Islanders :D
-
Great job Rick! I bet you're in the "minority" among Long Islanders :D

I just shot my first deer ever, too, Rick, and i had the very same thought as you, "Oh S*&t, i just shot a deer." Shot him on the ground, from no more than 15 feet away, with a 4-bladed 125 on carbon shaft, using a yew longbow i just finished. I was able to stalk that close to him! As soon as i loosed the arrow, the buck bounded away. I am sorry to say i could not find it. It still bothers me. I had bad dreams that night of wounded animals. One was a huge horse with my arrow poking out of his shoulder! Another was my buck but with a whole pile of my arrows in it. Another, of all my arrows stuck in a post off the property.
Next time. You did good, buddy.
-
Radius
That is impressive, stalking to 15 feet. I'm sorry you couldn't find him, but I think that is an unfortunate part of this , that we all will face at some point. I still have doubts that I can do it again. I'm in hopes that I get another chance just to prove to myself that it wasn't a fluke. Keep at it and good luck.
-
I guess I must be the Luckiest Person on this Earth....because besides the Gutshot Doe that was my first Deer Kill...that We tracked till Dark...and went back the Next day till We found her.....I have never had A Deer go more that 60 yards with Bow...Pistol ....or Rifle....I am not one to take an Iffy Shot....If I am not sure that I can...I pass...and that is hard to do sometimes too! I only Hunt with Pistol or Bow any more...and I have never been Happier!
Rick...I am sure that You can do it over again....I would bet it wasn't a Fluke....Shooting Target is Hard....getting everything to fall into place with a Live deer walking Your Way...is unbelievably Harder!! And You did it.....
-
Man Rick, That is sweet! I've heard of 'ground growth' before but I've never seen 'barn growth'! :o ;D. Nice deer. I think I'm now the world's greatest deer repellent.
-
Thanks Aaron, Maybey you are MI's version of the "WGDR" but I got the east coast title wrapped up. ;D
-
Hey Rick glad you finaly gotR done! Feel free to move down here to Mo.,could use more guys like you.Got a story for ya,was hunting with Koan, using a bow he made me for my B-day,shot a slick head from the ground and then while good buddy Koan is helping locate,he gets tripped up in downed tree top,and falls across his quiver and breaks his cane arras. So now I feel bad and guess I need to use the tonkin you sent for replacements. :o
-
Congrats on your deer, sounds like you will be putting that cane to good use. That is a funny story. I'll have to check out Mo. I have a feeling that if I ended up down there all we would make is empty beer bottles. ;D.
-
Dude! Thats one of the things that makes life good!
-
Great story Rick. congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I remember my first. I spined it so it dropped right there and I was like what just happened I can't believe I got one. Mine was also a nubby. I actually prefer to shoot them over full size deer ;) Easy to handle and the best meat you could ask for.
-
Now you've done it , you're ruined for life. ;) How many points on him- thought I counted 14.Great "enhancement" job- fooled me till i looked again!
