This is the second Pacific Nine Bark bow I've made. The first was just a stick. This one I finished. Nine Bark is very pretty wood. Looks like Yew and so far behaves like it too. This one is a little on the small diameter side so the sapwood/heartwood line doesn't show on the side except at the tips. Sapwood is about 3/16-14" on every piece I've seen. Hard to find a straight piece so this is spliced. Next bow will be from a larger diameter and will show off the wood better. SG is about .9. I wasn't sure about the wood so I decided to make it a little longer and somehow I ended up with a 71" NTN bow. 42#@28". 171 fps at 10gpp so considering the extra length it's packing I think the wood hold promise.

That's really cool, DC! Looks great and very interesting to see something new.
-
Awesome Don. (-S Never even heard of that wood. It sure is purdy, and the bend is even purdier. :D
-
Thanks guys h p://nativeplantspnw.com/pacific-ninebark-physocarpus-capitatus/ will get you a look at it. It bends pretty easily too.
-
Another nice job DC.
-
Looks all right, hopefully the handle wont pop off. What is ninebark some sort of shrub..?
-
Look at the link. You've probably got some growing near your place.
-
DC part of the url got cut off in your link. So here it is for anyone having trouble with it.

Nice looking bow Don! I really like the wood too, plenty of big pieces around the campground ;)

Nice, Good speed.

Very nice DC. I like your style of R/D a lot. I bet this bow is very smooth to draw and fun to shoot.
-
Thanks for the comments guys. I was actually surprised how smooth it was. With the extra length I was expecting it to have some thump. When i originally wanted it to be a little longer I was thinking maybe 68-69". Had a bit of brain fade I guess and wound up with 71". I'm toying with piking it a couple of inches and redoing the recurves but i probably won't.

Nice bow D C. Like Ben said, your r/d style is quite impressive. Another well done bow.
-
That's a real nice bow, don't you love it when they draw so smooth! At 171fps I would not pike it!
-
That wood is a new one on me as well. It is a beauty for sure!
-
Thanks guys. A google search told me that there is an Eastern species of Ninebark
h p://www.hort.uconn.edu/plants/detail.php?pid=308 but it seems a little small.

Very nice work drawing that one out Don. I dig it. Gotta love those bushy hardwoods we got. I’ve been after some nine bark for a few years never seem to run across any. Can’t wait to see the next one bud. 👍🏼👍🏼

Marsh margins and stream banks are where to look. It seems to come in thickets. There'll be a hundred yards of the stuff on a stream bank and then nothing.
-
Beautiful bow DC you are always pushing the bar and doing it with tallent.
-
Nice bow DC!! Good to know that there is other types of bow wood here in the PNW that makes a beautiful bow. :OK
-
Thanks guys. It does make you wonder how many little used bow woods there are out there. I say little used because Pojar and Mackinnon say the Nuu-chah-nulth people made children's bows from it. Funny just children's bows.
