Season is coming to a close and my chances to get a stone point kill were slipping away. My wife is days away from having our baby so it was really cutting it close. i had been hunting with stone almost all year with some mixed results, lots of bad luck, lots of good luck but nothing was really coming together. well it finally all came together on this 8pt. he came in chasing does first thing in the morning and walked broadside at 11 yards and stopped to smell the ground and i just flat drilled him. i got nearly a complete pass through. only the fletchings stayed in the chest. i hit one lung square, cut the top off the heart and nicked the opposite lung. i hit a rib going in which busted my point up but it still did its damage and exited the other side without hitting rib going out.
it was with my 65# osage bow, cane arrow with hardwood foreshaft and texas chert point. included is a pic of the killing point next to an obsidian point exactly like it, only difference was type of stone. he ran 50 or 60 yards and crashed hard. it was -3 degrees F this am and lots of snow. the blood sprayed 3 feet wide the whole way to him.....no need to even look for blood, it was everywhere. exit hole was the size of a quarter.
the tip broke off the point along with one whole size, it just sheered the whole cutting surface off one side (showed in pics) but the pitch and sinew all held together great. found the business end of the arrow about 20 yards down the trail
I hunted nearly all year with stone and I have really learned a lot about stone hunting... A lot. ..LOL feel free to Pm me if you have any questions or anything. i did lots of different types of hunting and situations and all i can say is hunting with stone is way different than hunting with steel points.
but anyways here he is. also i dressed him out with a hand knife which was basically just a sharpened flake... it did the trick with ease.

Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing this hunt. I have seen a good many sheared points like that out in the columbia river corridor and down in the east side of oregon, must be the nature of stone hitting bone. Congratulations ! ! ' Frank

thanks a lot guys... yeah I'm pretty busy now. Baby, building the house, Trying to make a dollar or two, i havent had much time to reflect on my hunt, which is one thing i really like to to.... thats ok, many sleepless nights ahead of me for "reflecting", im sure. I cant wait til i get all settled this year so i can participate in this site more like i used to...sadly i have even let my subscription on the PA mag run out.. funny how a new baby and building a house can break you nearly overnight..lol thats ok i wouldnt trade either one.
