I thought I'd better make this official.
March 20, 21 and 22, 2015 at Moon Tree Farm, Richmond, KY
This is a small gathering as bowyer events are concerned, but it's been a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to it again this year.
Activities include bow building, arrow making, knapping and 3D course. And a lot of bull being spread around.
Dinners Friday and Saturday evening will be:
Smoke Wild boar one evening and Venison Chili the other.
Side items are appreciated.
RSVP will help a lot in the food preparation, like there's ever been a shortage of food. haha
Camping can be set up in the yard with drop cords for electricity. Some housing is available.
I look forward to seeing the founding members and meeting new folks.
Dave
-
Count me in!! I can bring a deer hind quarter if that will help out, or I will have the Warden to make some desserts. ;D Can I crash in the house again? :-\
-
I'll be there for sure. I can bring something for the dinners. I might get the wife to make something for me to bring. Thanks for hosting this Dave. I always have a great time at the Moontree farm. I wouldn't mind crashing in the cottage if there is room. I can bring an air mattress and sleep on the floor if need be.
-
Its on my calendar........... now that Dave made it official.... :)
DBar
-
Dave, any chance of another pizza oven? That was delicious.
-
You and your pizza......big bad Bill had to make you a Totino's in Marshall.
-
It was a Jack's pizza Mr. Drums. Get your facts right ;D And Bill can make a great pizza over charcoals. I might have to think of another challenge for him.
-

-
I'm thinking about a Cornish game hen over charcoals sounds tasty :)
-
After that episode at Moontree 1, I'm surprised you go near chicken! Glutton for punishment?
-
I'm glad to see so many of the Founding Fathers of the Moon Tree Gathering have already committed to the event.
I do have one goal for this event and that is to spend more time in the bow shop than I do cooking. So let's keep meals simple this year. Clint I love doing the wood oven pizzas, but it was real time consuming last year with the wind and rain. I started the fire at 10:30; the last pizza came out of the oven at 4:30. If by some chance I get my "new design" oven built by then we'll do pizzas.
Greg, are you thinking of smoking the venison hind quarter? I could set up the smoker in front of the workshop so it would be easier to monitor the flame and temperature while still socializing in the workshop.
I shot a wild boar last a couple weeks ago with my Ruger Blackhawk. I was thinking some BBQ pork chops would make a good entre one evening.
Last year there were some requests for clay pigeon shooting for this year's firearm portion of the event. Are we wanting to plan that this year?
Greg and Clint, your indoor reservations are booked. :)
-
Pearly, are you going to make down this year? It would be great having here.
-
No worries on the pizza oven Dave. We can eat fast and easy this year. I would be interested in some clay pigeon shooting. Do you still have the mountain man beard? I thought PatB was there when I pulled up last year.
-
Clint, I have beard. I grow one every year starting the first of August in preparation of deer season. I usually shave it in January and I usually keep it trimmed. Last year I let it grow and kept it for the gathering. I imagine that I'll shave it before March this year.
-
Pearly, are you going to make down this year? It would be great having here.
Dave I would love to, but this year I will have ZERO out of state shoots to attend. I just have too many other family deals going that eat up my vacation time. But, one day I will be down. Maybe I can catch a ride with Dan-O one of these times.
-
I sure hope we are busting some clay targets this year. I just picked up a 100 round box of shells for $13 :o We need to find a way to handicap the Disco Bear ;D He will out shoot all of us with a 410
-
Clint,
We're going to start calling you the sh!t stirrer. :) :) ;) I don't own a 410 but I will bring my 28 ga over & under Beretta >:D
Any bets??? ???
By the way I'll bring a box of clays and a thrower.
DBar

DBar
Only if I can place my bet in your corner ;D
Bill, are you any good shooting left handed? I haven't shot any clays in several years but we used to have a big shoot every new years day. We would play a point game and I liked putting guys out with a left handed shot. Just to rub a little salt in the wound >:D
-
Bill bring your thrower. I have one, but it's always fun to launch multiple birds. Bill, I have a couple .410's if you want to use them. There's a H&R Snake Charmer. You can shoot it like a pistol if you like. Oh, and there's my Mother's Steven bolt action, but it's really a single shot most of the time. OH OH I got the gun for you--a T/C New Englander .12 guage muzzleloading shotgun. On second thoughts I might have to use that one. We can share. :) .410 shells are too expensive to shoot anyhow.
Pearly, I hear you my year has been sort like that, also.
-
Clint,
I'm not any good right handed, why would I want to try left handed????? ;D ;D
Dave,
I'll bring the thrower and some clays....28 ga. is tough enough, thanks for the offer but I'll pass on the 410.... :) but now that smooth bore smoke pole in 12ga may be just the ticket unless were shooting doubles.. ;)
Till next time
-
Uh oh. Out of my element here. Not much of a shotgunner. Can I use a .22?
-
You will pick up on it real quick Greg. Do you have a shotgun to bring? If not we can share my 12g 870. I have a single shot 20g I can bring to if anybody wants to shoot it. I think its a youth model.
-
In 12 gauges I have 870 Special Field and a Winchester Ranger 120. In 20 gauges I have Remington 1100 and a Rossi side by side. I think we can find a shotgun for someone to shoot.
-
The way Bill took out the Zombie last year with his bow, I think he should use his bow to shoot clay pigeons. >:D
-
Looks like those dates are the start of my spring break. I'll be there early Saturday into Sunday. Hoping the weather is good, but always a good time! I'm sure Ozzy will make it as well.
Tracy
-
Good to hear Tracy. See you in a few months.
-
I'm trying to talk Derik into coming down this year.
-
I'm trying to talk Derik into coming down this year.
Him and Dave would be a hoot at midnight dinner :o
Looking forward to this one!
-
They sure would. I might invest in some PBR stock if he makes it ;D
I'm really looking forward to it also Tracy. Moontree kicks off the new season of gatherings.
-
I wish I could make it this year but it's just not in the cards. Had a great time last year and this year looks to be a good one too. I hope I get to catch up with you guys at some shoots up north this summer.
-Dan
-
Dan, you'll be missed. I've re-graveled the driveway. :)
-
I've re-graveled the driveway. :)
Boy, I sure hope I can recognize the place ;D ;D ;)

-
My suspension says thanks Dave ;D
-
Clint, you're suspension would have been just fine, 'cept you had the bed of the truck full of yellow wood. haha
-
Man, I can't wait!
-
For any new guys that are thinking about making it this year here is a link to some pictures from last years gathering.

Thanks Clint for posting the link and pictures.
-
sounds like alot of fun!! Im in if they dont make us work that weekend, I also love to shoot skeet i've got a thrower and plenty of shells. Are kids aloud to come and shoot also?
-
You know I'll be there ;)
-

I don't think we have had any kids there yet but I don't see any problem with bringing them. Its a great group of guys that show up. Maybe Dave will give the official word on it.
Are you close by Gutshot?
-
Gutshot, I will agree with Osage Outlaw. So, far there's not been any kids here, but I don't see a problem with them attending. None of us real "potty mouths" unless a bomb goes off in the front yard, then you might want to cover their ears before my wife steps out on the porch. haha Long story, we'll tell you when you get here. haha We do drink a few beers, but no one gets out of hand.
And the kids are welcome to shoot the 3D course and clay pigeons. The shoots of informal, no one really keeps score. But, if they shoot better than I do, I might have to assign them dish washing duties. Just kiddin'
-
Missed my spring break by 1 week. Ah well, I don't like shootin clays or hangin out with the guys anyway!! >:( >:( >:D. Maybe next year.
-
It would have been good to have you there Scott.....enjoy watching you knap
Bill
-
Hey Dave, just wanted to thank you again for help with the string. Jack and I will definitely be out some.
Thanks
-
I am hoping to make it. I was wondering if anyone was going to bring any hedge staves that would be older than a year old to trade ? I have about 20 myself, I can bring some but all cut less than 4 months. I might not be able to make a good bow yet, but I have been cutting some really good osage. Joe from Ky.
-
I'll be bringing some staves. I have some that were cut and split in March of last year. I'll try to bring some older ones to.
-
Straydawg, Balsatech,
Good to here some new blood is going to make it.... :)
DBar
-
Straydawg, if my pleasure meeting you and your son. Glad you're going to be able to swing by.
Balsatech, Looking forward to meeting you. I have some old osage, nothing really pretty or much over 60" long.
-
I'm pretty sure Brian and Mike will make it again this year. They were talking it up to some of my other friends a couple weeks ago at the cabin.
-
Hedgeapple, everything i've got cut is over 6ft. and some over 8. Some is deep enough to get belly splits out of also, not as hard to find as it is finding time to cut. Joe.
-
Wish I had that problem! Very hard to find here and when you do, it looks like a spider web. But, I have connections on here!
-
Balsatech, most all of my staves are cut longer, also. It's just...there maybe a knot, a twist or both at that length. :)
-
I can make it Friday, and maybe part of Saturday. I have some staves to trade, and a sack full of snakes to skin...
I may have a sack or two of seed also...
-
I'll help ya with the snake skin'n.... :)
DBar
-
I could help out as well
-
It's great you can make it Joe. Staves and snake skins hmmm?
Seeds (with egg on my face): If you remember last year my tractor had a cracked block. Well, I couldn't get it replaced until mid-July. By the time I got caught up on necessary bush hogging it was too late for me to plan any food plots. I didn't even get winter wheat planted. So, I still have all the seeds you gave me last year. YES they will be planted this season. I'm going to try to do 2 plantings. So, don't feel you need to bring seeds for me. BUT, guys deer like that quail food, too.
-
Is it safe to say if I bring a close to finished bow or two I can get help with the final tillering? Also I use a bench vise at home would it help if I had something portable to bring?
-
I'm sure you could get some help with the tillering. Dave has a few vises in his bow shop. There are usually a couple of portable bench vises also. Hopefully the weather is a little dryer this year so we can work outside to.
-
I can help with the snake peelin. :) Anyone handy at tanning fur?
-
I can help with the snake peelin. :) Anyone handy at tanning fur?
Never done it before but I would sure give you a hand at it. >:D
-
I have a piece of 8" pvc we could use to flesh a hide on.
-
I've tanned probably 20 deer hides. Most turned out pretty well. I've not really tried a "fur-on" tan yet. I have bobcat in the freezer that's been there for 4 to 6 years. I really need to do something with it. Tanning a hide is pretty much a 3 week process with the last 8 or 10 days requiring daily attention at least twice a day. I just have a hard time committing that much time into my schedule.
I, also, have a doe hide from this year, plus a boar skull and buck skull that need attention for a European mount.
What are you tanning, Greg?
-
I have a piece of 8" pvc we could use to flesh a hide on.
I think 8" pvc would be great for fleshing. I've used 4" pvc in the past. It works well but you've got to move the hide a lot because of the narrow work surface. I have 12" pvc pipe 3 foot long; it weighs about 30 pounds. Actually, I have 4 of them. Three are being used as deer feeders.
The trick is figuring out how to mount the pipes on a frame so you can create a work station. I have one with 4" pvc built. I'm not sure of it's condition. I haven't used it in about 7 years. I'll try to get out today, brush the snow off it and take some pictures. I've been thinking that I need to redesign a fleshing bench.
There seems to a 100 different ways to tan a hide; from the chemical Tandy Leather kit, Tannery in a Box, to egg tanning to brain tanning to using tannin from tree bark. I've done the Tannery in a Box most of the time. But, I did an egg tanning on the last set of deer hides. It worked pretty well, but I still need to smoke them and work them out more. All in all, I have 8 to 10 deer hides in various stages of completion. haha
Do we want to do a hide tanning clinic this Gathering? I am far from being an expert, but we can give it a go if there's interest. I bet Bill has some tanning experience, also, and maybe Joe??
-
I have coyote and bobcats, plus a red fox and a coon that I made a novice attempt at.
-
Never tanned anything myself but I did have a buddy of mine pickled a coyote hide for me , turned out real good, and pretty soft for not breaking the fibers down. Joe.
-
I've got a few skins to tan also. I might bring a chipmunk hide to experiment with.
-
Ok, seems like we're going to attempt to tan some hides. I have 3 or 4 deer hides that were salted and have been laying in the shed for years. The mice love them. haha. They're probably on good for raw hide to convert to hide glew. We'll de-hair those. I have a hide or two that are in raw hide form that I can start the egg tanning. Have 3 hides that were egg tanned but not worked (another egg bath and work them would be good for them). I have a couple egg tanned hides that are pretty soft, that could stand a smokin'.
I will build another fleshing board other than the one shown in the picture below with 4" pvc and make a yoke for the 12" pvc. I'll build a couple 8' by 8' racks for stretching and smoking the hides.
What you can bring are:
1. eggs if you're doing the egg tan method, or whatever tanning method you might be using. That's is if you're far enough along with the process to be ready to tan a hide. Basically, that means the hide has been de-hair if needed and fleshed.
2. Pickle buckets with lids. These will be needed in the hair removal and tanning.
3. A hide scraping tool.
4. A hand-held belt sander would be nice. Mine stopped running. I need to take it apart to see if I revive it again.
5. Plenty of string to use in the hide stretching.
I'm sure I will think of something else we need. Let hope for warmer weather.
-
I've got a fleshing blade I will bring and so so fleshing beam. I used the fleshing blade on my first stave :P :o. Tanned some mink, muskrat and coons but haven't done it in years.
I'm bringing everything for breakfast casserole this year. Might not be as good as the dollar general buffet that Clint and I went and got.
Someone's going to have to bring a case of that skee or ale8 and pay you for it. Can't find it around here. Maybe Daniel will see this.
Probably bring one or two rocks to beat on.
Shotgun,shells and clays too!
Tracy
-
Great Tracy, It'll be good to have here who might actually know what they're doing with this tanning business. :)
We have ale-8 around here. It's actually made about 15 miles from the farm. Ski is a little harder to come by, but I'll search for some.
-
I picked up 50 unbroken clay targets at work the other day. Somebody was doing a little shooting at one of our rural pump stations. I made it home with about 44. I'll pick up a full box to. I can marinate some deer steaks if you have a grill I could borrow Dave.
-
Clint, sure we'll have a grill or two available. Nice score on the clay pigeons. I have over a half a box and will pick up another case.
-
Do you guys think that band saw blade material I brought last year would work for fleshing a hide? If it will, I can bring some more.
-
I have a fleshing knife, but dont know how to use it. >:(
-
I have a couple coon hides and an otter in the freezer, and a salted elk hide. I've tanned with Liquitan before, it tanned stiff, because I didn't take the time to work the leather..
I have a fleshing knife and lots of experience skinning and fleshing if anyone needs fur handling advice...
I found a huge chunk of flint the other day, too big to pack... almost the size of a five gallon bucket..
-
Great guys. You're going to laugh at my fleshing tool.
Joe, I just knew you have some experience handling critter hides.
-
drawknives are great fleshing tools.. I know there are some of those around...
-
I never could get the hang of using a drawing knife as a fletching tool. I do have small about 4" long that might work quite well though. Plan to give it try.
-
I know how to catch and skin varmints, and eat some, but fur handling I need to learn (and tanning).
-
I never could get the hang of using a drawing knife as a fletching tool. I do have small about 4" long that might work quite well though. Plan to give it try.
I've never been able to fletch with one either... :D
-
I've done a few skins in the past, some with hair and some without. I live in a subdivision and when I did a couple without hair, I had deer hair all over the back yard and the neighbor's. ::) The hair on ones went real well but it's been about 15 years since I did it. It will be good to get back to it....I'll pitch in and help with anything I can.
Tracy, the breakfast casserole sounds good, I was thinking the same thing and thought about bringing the dutch ovens and making some biscuits and sausage gravy one morning.
DBar

Mmm. . .no offense Clint, but donuts just dont compare to biscuits and gravy.
-
I agree Greg. I can't wait to head south and spend some shop time with you guys again.
-
Sounds like we should do both cause the Dutch biscuit and gravy is sounding great!
Tracy

I should be up plan on doing Friday night and Saturday if not I'll do a day trip Saturday.

Make sure you bring some pics of your son or if you do the day trip just bring him!
-
Daniel, I bet you are ready for a couple of quiet days in Dave's bow shop. Glad you are going to be able to make it.
-
I may just bring a cot and sleep the whole time if you guys don't mind?
-
Daniel, do what you need to do, Brother. :)
-
I can now add beaver to the list of hides that I need help with tanning. I caught my first two this morning. Those suckers are big varmints. Clint, would you need a beaver skull for your collection?
-
Sure!
-
Good job Greg.
-
Save those tails for handle wraps!
Tracy
-
Yea I've done a few rawhide wraps...............real thin, and tough to flesh all the grissel off. you really have to be careful when lacing, holes tear out easy. but definately worth saving for sure.....

Yins guys can use those to make your new loin cloths to go with your new buckskins y'all will be wearing

Just think it'll be the first beaver your privates has seen in years.....just don't pitch a tent >:D

Greg I tried mentioning it to the wife and I got "the look" followed by some words. ::) I'd like to if I have enough vacation time to do so,and if I get a pass from the wife. But as of now its a no-go.
-
Hey BH
I'd wear a beaver tail loin cloth before I would admit to being hen pecked.. >:D
:o on second thought me in a loin cloth, ??? :-[

Danzn Bar invited me to come and I'd love to. Buuuutt my girlfriends birthday is that Saturday so not sure if I'll be able to come.

Just tell her moontree is a one of a kind mall in Richmond and you have had this surprise birthday trip planned for a year. I can guarantee she would be surprised >:D
-
Hey DLH,
Is that what you had to said to your better half to get to go to the Scottsburg shoot a year or so ago??? >:D :) ;).

Sure is Bill had to take her out to eat! I don't think I can slip anything by her she is starting to catch onto my tricks.

I'm sure Dave's got a table and chairs to set up overlooking the pond where you could romance her over dinner and the moonlight :o
If that doesn't work then what OO said :D
Tracy
-
Brilliant idea Daniel!!! :D
-
Sure I set up a "romantic" candle lit dinner for two. And for the fireworks show, we'll shoot flaming arrow. Clint, you're in charge of stomping out the field fire. :)
-
I was hoping I could be in charge of explosives again >:D
-
What if we made your romantic dinner into a trick shot? First one to shoot the candle flame out while your eating wins?
-
I was hoping I could be in charge of explosives again >:D
Yep, that was impressive :D , just ask Dave's wife :o

That looks like what we bait bear traps with Tracy!
-
Joe, that's what we used in the culvert traps in the U P and Wisconsin for problem bears. Yogi burgers are sounding really good :D
-
Bears must have good taste ;D
-
Another beaver and another coyote caught this weekend. We should have plenty of fur to practice on.
-
You are cleaning up this winter Greg. Hope you got a big freezer.
-
You are cleaning up this winter Greg. Hope you got a big freezer.
I am only trapping in 3 areas with just a very few traps out. I don't have time to check a lot before work. I think I have 4 or 5 traps out. Very good spots though. The 2 bobcats and 2 of the coyotes came from the same spot. There are plenty of trappers that catch waaay more fur than me, but I am tickled with my catch so far.
-

It sounds like a successful weekend. All I got was one bunny Saturday.
-
You guys got me fired up for this event. I know a little about tanning. I've been doing my own taxidermy work for the last 6 years and have tanned out many of pelts and deer hides. Even boiled those nasty skulls out. The only thing I'm not into is skinning snakes. Is there a scheadule or time frame for certain events on certain days or does every thing kinda goes with the flow. Thanks
-
Everything just kind of goes with the flow. The only thing scheduled is dinner. Dave likes to eat dinner around midnight ;D If you have any snakes that need skinning go ahead and bring them. I'll zip them open for you.
-
Thanks Osage , but my ole buddy skins them for me I give him plenty of field corn from the barn to feed his critters.
-
Other than fleshing knives and fleshing beams and buckets, what other items do we need? What are the best tanning solutions to use for soft tanning? I think I understand the prep work, just not the actual tanning itself.
-

I use Mckenzie ultimate acid for pickeling then Mckenzie tanning cream then On pelts I put leather oil on them then work them over a 1" square bar until they loosen up and dry. If you don't want rug type pelt then I put them on stretching wire frames
-
I sure hope the weather cooperates this year. Looks like we are going to have a great weekend of work and fun.
-
Gutshot, I'm looking forward to learning from you. I've only used Tandy's Tannery in a box and egg solution. I've never really done a hair-on hide.
Greg, to remove hair I used to use the stuff in the Tannery in a Box. The last few deer hide I did, I used ashes and water solution. It take 3 to 5 days for the hair to loosen up nicely. The ash solution does leave hide a bit gray, but by the time you work the hide out it's off white/cream white, plenty clean enough for smokin'. The trick for a soft hide, in my limited experience, has been to work it, work it and work it more. If you start with a wet hide and work it until it's dried, it's going to be pretty soft. If it's still not soft enough for you, wet it and work some more. Pappy does a dry scrape method to remove the hair. I'd love to see that done.
Everyone interested in doing this tanning process I would suggest having hides at various stages of the process so you can get your feet wet doing some of all of them. But, remember tanning a hide doesn't happen is 3 day, from my experience. Like if you're wanting to remove hair with ash solution, it needs to soak for at least 3 day with it being stirred 3 to 5 times a day, before the hair can be removed easily.
I plan to make two 8x8 stretching frames that will be hinged together to create a smoking frame. I'll also buy some 3x4 so we can make addition frames as needed.
And string, string and more string. I'm talking about nylon type string/twine/cord of the paracord size. Less stretch twine is better, but zero stretch parachod is pretty expensive. My experience is you can go through 50ft of cord on one deer hide pretty quickly.
There are at least 3 of us, Wapiti, Gutshot and myself who have some experience in tanning hides, don't be afraid to ask questions. But, be warned you might get three different answers. haha In my studies of hide tanning, there seems to be as many different ways to tan a hide as there is to make a bow.
Lastly, it would be nice to know: what hides you're bring, where you plan to be in the process and what you want to accomplish with the hides. It would give me an idea of what to plan for.
-
All of mine will be fur on pelts. Bobcat, coyote and beaver. I'm looking at possibly making quivers from mine.
-
I'm going to trap a few skunks and bring them whole so you guys can show me how to skin them and then tan them >:D >:D
Tracy
-
I will try to bring a fawn hide and 2 chipmunks. I can bring my own stretching racks.

I've only got one deer hide left in my freezer. I will get it fleshed out and get by it cut up in 4 sections for all phases of tan so you guys can see how I do it. I've also tried the ash and water but my experience hotter the weather the better and always use hard lumber ash. Cold weather was no good for mine
-
Just ordered a Mckenzie tanning kit. Says it is enough to two deer hides. That should about do what I have.
-
I'm going to trap a few skunks and bring them whole so you guys can show me how to skin them and then tan them >:D >:D
Tracy
You going to bring them in Ozzy's car?
-
Gutshot, I never thought about weather affect the ask solution. I could see where it might cause the pores to tighten. Maybe that why it took longer to looses the hair than I had read, cause I usually do most of fletching in the winter months.
Now, the egg tanning solution is mighty touchy in the heat of the summer. I did my first batch in July and had it in the carport in a pickle bucket. I stirred it right on schedule. I immediately started the second batch even though I was going camping in NC. I put the lid on the pickle bucket to transport it to campground. I didn't stir on the trip down, then forgot about most of the next day. It was "working" in that closed bucket. It smelled terrible when I opened the bucket. haha. I washed the hides out and brought them home. I re-stretched and dried them, but never finished the process. Those are the ones that need to be done over to finish the process. haha

Nothing like the spots!!! Good catch

Nice catch Greg! You having a good season. You get too many bob kitties I might have to see about finding something to trade you for one ;)
Tracy
-
That kitty cat doesn't look happy. He needs some catnip and a ball of yarn.
-
That was my biggest cat to date. I think it is headed to the taxidermist. If for some odd reason the Warden (wife) doesn't sign off on the idea, then a fine quiver it shall be.
-
Take that pic to the taxidermist, cool pose , trap and all mounted.
Danzn bar, not sure Ozzy with let me in the car with some skunks or even smelling like Pepe Lepew :D
Tracy
-
Skunks don't smell bad, do they??? I kinda like the way they smell.. maybe that's why I was 20 years old before I started dating....
-
Hey Guys,
The knee has been giving me hell lately. I just got back from the Doc's office. Going to have a total knee done March 2nd so I'm still planning on being at Moon Tree, just may not be jumping up and down on the 3D course.....
DBar
-
Get patched up Bill. Hope all goes well. Dave might let you ride the riding mower around the course. ;)

How are you gonna help me cut and split osage with a bum knee? My wife can point a finger.... :D
-
Glad you are getting that bad wheel replaced Bill. I like the idea of the riding mower. If that doesn't work we will put you in charge of cooking while we kill some foam critters.
I can help you split some osage Wapiti. I've been practicing all winter. I think I have it figured out now ;D
-
Hope all goes well for Ya

I can bring the deer cart and tote you from target to target ;D
Yeah, get that taken care of and I'm sure we will all help you out. Hope it goes well!
Do you think you can make a shot from the workshop to the target down by the pond? I was thinking that make a neat novelty shot at one of those little balloons. Of course Ozzy and Dave would be banned from that shot >:D
Tracy
-
For you new guys that are coming for the first time is there anything bow related that you are wanting to see done? Like string making, snake skin backing, chasing a ring, heat bending, etc? If there is something in particular that you are wanting help with one of us could probably help out.
-
Good Idea Clint, You guys just let us know ....... I'll have plenty of shop time available....
-
Well, started my tanning endeavor. Got a sassy coyote hide soaking in an acid pickle bath. TWRA emailed me wanting to meet and show me some problem beaver areas. Hope to have more fur soon.
-
Be careful with the acid Greg. And good luck with the beavers.
I picked up some supplies for Moontree tonight on the way home. Still have a few more things on my list to get. This year I'm not telling anybody what it is :-X >:D
-
Greg, good luck with all those beavers. I've been so good with conversations of you and your beavers. I'm saving up for the gathering. >:D
Clint, anyone else who said they "pickup supplies" I would think moonshine. But, with you, there's no telling. Should I get Schuy some soap-on-a-rope, just in case she needs an emergency mouth washing?
-
I don't think that will be necessary Dave :)
-
Clint, I'm fairly new and appreciate you asking. I can tell you what would help me the most would be if anyone could bring cauls, ( reflex, reflex deflex, recurve tip forms) I can paper trace. Or if someone could trace them out themself if they don't want to lug them here. What I have made and been using so far needs to be upgraded bad. Joe.
-
I'll bring my caul and some recurve tip forms. I know Dave has several hanging in his shop so you will have a few to pick from.

Joe, Bring your boards and make them on the spot. We can modify or start new. We can even get it broke in for you :D
Greg is the beaver whisperer! :o
Clint, can't wait to see! Never been disappointed

I think I'm blushing already.
-
I've got these Osage sister staves I need to splice together. Pretty nervous I will hold up on them if I can get some help on them
-
I haven't done any splicing so I won't be of any help.
-
I can bring lumber for forms That's no problem. Does Dave per chance have a band saw and drill press in his shop. I cut the ones I use now with a sawzaw and a rasp. Not real exact. Joe.
-
As far as splicing, I've not done one but been wanting to, and been thinking about it for some time now. If I can get into the shop in the next couple weeks I'll have a set of billets we can do first to learn on. I think the important part is cutting on the correct side of the line and prepping the billets prior to layout and sawing. Go ahead a bring your billets we'll take a look.
Joe,
Yes Dave has a band saw, and all the tools to make a caul. Bring some nails or better yet screws and will help ya make the cauls....
-
I have a drill press and bandsaw.
-
I can bring you guys some billets to practice on. They are debarked but will need to be taken down at least one growth ring for a clean back.
-
Hey Clint ...thanks that's great, bring all you want as long as I can take all the practice pieces home once they are cut >:D
-
You got it Disco Bear. I need to put a couple aside for Cody but I'll bring plenty for you guys to work on.
-
I've done a half dozen splices(successful ones) and really like drawing the cuts on the mailing label stickers and applying to the squared up ends of the billets. Back and belly need to flat and squared for best fit. I was doing 4" W splices. I never pegged the splice with a dowel like some say to do. After seeing what Marc St. Louis does with his splices, I think it's a good idea to glue up the splice with setback in the handle like he does. He also only does a 3" splice.
Tracy
-
:o W0w Tracy getting all technical on us ...glad to see some experience going to be there. We may end up with a bunch of nice spliced staves at the end of the weekend. I love it......................................
-
Tracy,
I do agree with you, if you do have billets with the backs down to a good ring and the back and belly square with the sides perpendicular to the back and belly....and while your doing all of that you might a well add a little reflex to the stave.........
Sounds like a good weekend ..
DBar
-
Thanks D Bar, and thanks Dave for hosting this event. I don't live to far from you Dave ( Jess.Co.) so if anyone needs anything durring the weekend I will be driving back and forth. The caul I have now is made from 2 by 6's you tell me, I can see where 10's or 12's would work better if wanting to use C clamps. Any suggestions for lumber ? Joe.
-
I think I used a 2x8 on my last caul
-
I think all my cauls are 2x6 as well. Heck you can get 5 1/2" of reflex with a 2x6. Now if you're really recurving the tip and are wanting add the reflex and recurve at the same time. 2x8 would probably be better. I personally like to recurve my tips in a separate process.
-
Bill, my experience is limited and the fun doesn't begin until you start fitting the splices together. That's why squared ends are very helpful. ;)
-
I have several 48"-50" bark on staves that we could use if needed. Looks like really good wood, just a little shorter than I like for bows. I can tote them up there to use for spliced billets. They are all 2+ years old.
-
Those are a good length for sinew backing and making short bendy bows Greg.
-
Those are a good length for sinew backing and making short bendy bows Greg.
Yeah, I tried one like that and it turned out ok, but shorties really aint my thing. I'll bring em, and the user can decide how to best utilize them.
-
Can we utilize them to keep Daves shop warm? >:D
-
Can we utilize them to keep Daves shop warm? >:D
Hey! I should think not! I have some Indiana stuff we will use for that. I worked too hard bow sawing and packing this stuff out.
-
I've got some 10 plus yr old Osage billets bark on if anybody wants to give them a go. Just say the word and I'll bring plenty of 36-42" pieces.
Tracy
-
I've got 130 clay targets. How much are we shooting? Should I pick up another box?
-
I thinking about bringing some lumber to make a recurve caul now too. I think I know what I want to do with that sinew and deer killer stave Clint just gonna take awhile atleast I'll have everything together when the time comes. Anyone gonna pull an all nighter?
-
Clays, let say 15 people are shooting and each shoots 1 box of shells (25) that's 375 pigeons. I have at least a 1/2 of box of clays, however many that might be. Maybe we can scavenge some unbroken birds, maybe not. And maybe some folks will want to practice Friday or Saturday morning before the shoot. And, maybe some folks will want to shoot some Sunday.
I'm thinking of set up a "pigeon range" like Brian does when we get together for our shooting match. It would be 5 stations, 1 to the left and one to the right of the thrower. 1 station far left and down hill to give the shooter a right to left crossing shot, another station that's a mirror image to that one giving the shooter a left to right crossing shot. AND then the pickle bucket station in front of the thrower, where the shooter gets an over the head/going away shot (0f course the pigeon is doing it's little frizbee drop at that time, also.
I've figured out how I'm going to make the scraping board out of the 12" pvc pipe. I'm going to cut it in half length ways and make 2 scraping beam from it. Now I can only use one scraping beam at a time. So, the second one is up for trade at the end of the gathering. So, I'm taking bids. >:D
-

I love doing it, Joe. Yeah, it's a little bit of work, but it's some much fun seeing my bowyer friends and meeting new ones, it all worth it.
-
Dave, I am still going to try to get some T shirts made for the event if I can. At this point, no guarantees. I was going to try to do this as a surprise, but figured someone would end up with the wrong size. I suppose I need to get everyone's shirt size that is going to attend. So, let's hear em.
XL for me.
-
I have a couple of boxes of birds I'll bring.
39 more days can't wait
-
XL for me.
-
XL me too.
-
XL
-
XL for me, need to start a tradition of everyone signing one every year for dave to frame in the shop.... :D
-
Does anybody want to mess with some super thin ringed osage? I'll bring some staves. If nobody wants them we can use them for firewood.
-
Man this is shaping up to be one fine gathering......I'd better be ready, this will definitely give me some incentive at rehab. At 2 1/2 weeks out of surgery, I'll be there for sure one day..............Hey Dave, if I can bum a couch to sleep on and not the back of my truck I might be able to stay two days. :-\
-
I'm XL too. Bill take that down stairs bed in the guest cottage doubt anyone would fight you for it
-
Bill, we'll find a place to you to lay your head. Plan on 2 days :)
Clint, is the thin ring osage something I could de-crown for a bamboo backed bow?
-
Bill, make sure your wife is your recovery nurse, we all know how your hospital stay ended when you were in college >:D
XXL, I don't have that slimming figure like you all :D
Tracy
-

Clint, is the thin ring osage something I could de-crown for a bamboo backed bow?
I don't know Dave. I've never decrowned a stave.
-
I've de-crowned 2 bows and laminated a hickory strip to them. Basically, they need to pretty darn clean, no knots or crazy twists. If you have the room bring them. If they don't work, like you said we can burn them.
-
I stopped and got the last item on my special list. (http://rabbittalk.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif)
-
Just got through reading all the posts and it sounds like a twisted episode of "American Horror Story". Never heard of so many dead animal parts being transported to one area. I will bring a few candles and some red paint to fit in.
Count me in Dave :)
-
Great Greg. Just stop and pick up some road kill on your way over.
-
Glad to hear you are going to be there again GMC.
-
Glad to hear you are going to be there again GMC.
Yep me too,
Hey GMC,
Got me one of those electric draw knives and knocked out seven 3yr old staves with bark on them down to heart wood in about an hour. Took me a while to get the hang of it. I will use it every time to remove bark and sapwood. It's a must to do it outside. ;) :) Thanks for the idea GMC... :)

You are very much welcome, Bill.
You use that thing enough you'll get really good with it, so good you'll be chasing rings with it.
Can't wait to see everybody again.
-
Bill, an electric draw nice is the bomb, especial on nice straight, clean stave. I'm not as good as GMC at chasing a ring with one but I can still get to the heart wood using one.
I finished the first fleshing beam today. This one will be up for trade. I need the make the one I keep with treated wood, because it will have to live outside. I think these are going to be awesome fleshing beams.
-
Nice beam Dave. Interested in that.
-
Can one of you guys bring your electric draw knife? I didn't get to see it in action last year. I would like to see how it compares to my chainsaw angle grinder.
-
Clint,
I'll bring the electric draw knife, I got a couple of staves I want to remove the bark and sapwood from.......
-
The curls from an electric draw knife, especially from osage, makes good fire starters. :)
I got the second fleshing beam finished today. I'll get the drying racks made next week and we should be in business. I'm making them as two: 8 x 8 foot squares, joined at the top with a bolt through hinge to create an A-frame. That way a people can work on each side. It should, also, make it handy for smoking the hides. We'll see how that works out.
-
If this weather doesn't break soon we won't be doing any hide tanning. Might have to invest in some show shoes to make it around the 3D course.

Or cross country skis! With this polar vortex moving In , I might make it to school Monday if the next round doesn't produce the heavy snow. My wife's dog got a mole today??? I'll bring it to tan as soon as it thaws ;D
Doesn't look like Marshall is going to work for me this year since were adding snow days to the end of the school year now :(
Keep looking out to see Ozzy screaming by on the Polaris but haven't seen him yet :D

I took Schuy to the chiropractor this afternoon. My driveway was hell. Going out the driveway I got stopped in the Tocamo twice going down hill. When we got back home it took 20 minutes to get from the road to the house. I'd hit snow drifts half way up the headlights, which would stall out the truck. Silly me didn't bring a shovel. So, I was in front of the truck throwing arm loads of snow out of the way. After doing that twice already, when I stalled on the third drift, I backed up about 20 feet and headed into the field where the snow wasn't as deep.
It was the wildest ride Schuy had ever had in a truck. She was a good co-pilot. I asked her strongly when we got to the driveway to be quiet and let me drive. She did very well, only pointing out that there was smoke inside the truck as we were approaching the last hill to the house. The smoke smell was the from the tires and maybe clutch.
I was supposed to be at work at 5PM. I called in.
We'll see what tomorrow brings.
-
I have a hard time making it up your driveway in good weather conditions Dave. I can't imagine how hard it would be now.
Has anyone talked to Derik recently? Is he going to be able to make it this year?
-
I haven't heard from Derick. Hope he makes.
-
I haven't heard from Derick. Hope he makes.
Not since August or so.
-
I'm helping Greg with getting shirts made up for the gathering and this is what I have so far for sizes:
GregS Xl
Dave Xl
Daniel Xl
Balsatech Xl
Gutshot Xl
Joe Xl
Brian Xl
Clint 2Xl
Ozzy 2Xl
Tracy 2Xl
GMC L
Still need sizes for anyone else that I missed or is planning on making it. You can PM me or post here and I will add it to the list. Dave, I sent you my email for the pic. Anyone have input on shirt color or other ideas? Seems like green is a possibility.
Tracy

2x for me.
I wouldnt mind seeing an exploding chicken on the shirt

I'm already on that! I was thinking a chicken sammich >:D
-
I like the exploding chicken idea as well >:D.
Put me down for a Large T Shirt. 8)

Does anyone need any supplies or trade goods? I'm looking for old draw knives and hatchets/axe heads. I've been collecting them lately.
Tracy, I reorganized my shop and found something knapping related that I missed when I rounded everything up last year. I'll bring it to you. If the foot of snow melts from on top of them I'll bust up one of those big grinding wheels for you.
-
Are you wanting older axe bits? I think I have a couple laying around that need handles that are 20-30 years old. My wife has been stopping at antique shops and auctions and will keep an eye out for this stuff. Draw knives I've seen have been pretty steep.
-
Tracy, I have been more into hatchets or small single bit axe heads. Making a new handle won't be a problem. I just made one for a mini hatchet. I'll be posting it soon with some other projects.
-
I could use some rocks to pound into smaller rocks. I have some secondary turkey feathers and quiet a bit of primary feathers. I think my feather cutter is 5" or maybe 5 1/2 so I could cut them. I'm sure I could come up with other stuff also.
-
I'd like to trade some primary RW turkey feathers to some LW I've got all kinds of rights
-
If,the weather cooperates, I'm going to try and make a rock run the weekend before Moontree. Hopefully the snow will be gone so I can find it in my spot and in the pit.
Tracy
-
Tracy, I'm doing a naked sunshine dance every evening in hopes of sun days. Man that obsidian you gave me last year was light years above my skill level. Every flake I tried to knock off of it was swirled and spoon shaped. By the time I got it thinned down they points were the size of nickel and still too thick. I really need a lesson on how to take a chunk of rock, read the grain and smack it so I can get a piece that I can work with.
Gutshot, I never figured you for a left wing kinda guy. Next thing I know you'll telling me of your dreams to move to California. haha
I'll look at my stash of feathers Saturday. I'm pretty sure I have quite a few LW primary feathers that I'd trade you for RW feathers. I like the Cherokee 2-fletch arrows, so secondary feathers would more to my liking, but I'll still trade you primary feathers for primary feathers.
-
Appreciate the dance for good weather Dave! Hopefully dry and sunny this time and we can spend more time outside breaking rock and working staves. Obsidian is a good medium to learn on. I've still got some bigger chunks I'll bring and you can work it down into a point.
Tracy
-
Hedgeapple, yes I'm a lefty with a bow and gun do to being born blind in my right eye. But will never go to Cali maybe Alaska thou. Can't wait were 3 weeks away
-
Gutshot, I remember to check my turkey wing stash in the workshop today. I have plenty of LW primary feathers.
-
Hi hedgeapple!..I'm planning on coming to the event with gutshot.I've been making and huntin with selfbows for several years and this sounds right up my alley.sounds like there might be some rock breaking goin on which has consumed my life for the last couple of years.I'm in need of a flintknapping mentor..youtube ain't gittin it done for me...lookin forward to meetin Yall!
-
Sounds like you'll fit right in mbt!
Tracy
-
welcome to the kaos mbt
-
I checked my feathers and I just have a few LW. I traded most of them away a while back.
Looking forward to meeting you new guys this year. Hope the weather is better
-
Hey guys, if any of you have any spare draw knives, I would be willing to trade staves for a couple. My boss is moving to Alaska soon, and will be building a log home. He needs a couple of larger ones to peel logs with and a smaller one. If interested, bring em to the gathering.
-
I wish my boss would move to Alaska ::)
-
I wish my boss would move to Alaska ::)
Maybe we can arrange that! I will volunteer my bosses to go with yours Clint ! Seriously
Tracy
-
My daughter finished the drawings on my moon tree bow and I just finished my moon tree beaver hip quiver. If you all can't tell I'm excited and can't wait
-
Looking forward to checking out the bow and quiver. I'm trying to get a new quiver done in time to bring with me.
-
Mine nothing fancy by no means but it will do. I made it for a lefty but can be a switched to right handed in a minute
-
Uh oh. Not sure I'm gonna make it. Looks like some scheduling conflicts. :'(
-
What >:(
-
No way Greg that "you" have a scheduling conflict. Now, someone else, my have a scheduling conflict, but not you. >:D
-
Uh oh. Not sure I'm gonna make it. Looks like some scheduling conflicts. :'(
That'll be a bummer! Hope it works out that you can make it but understand.
Tracy
-
If I get to make it, it will either be just Friday afternoon and night, or just Saturday night/Sunday morning. I'm committed for all day Saturday. This would be so much easier if my personal jet wasn't in the shop. :)
-
Hey Guys,
Just got home from the hospital with my total knee replacement I had Monday.....Damn Greg, hate to hear that I know how much you enjoy it. If things go as planned with no setbacks I should be able to drive then. I hope to be there for a day or two It all depends how things go the next two weeks. But this morning I had tendencies of chasing a nurse down the hall. ::) ;) O:) Same hospital and floor I got my ACL repaired 35 yrs ago. :). I may have to pull back on some things I said I was going to bring.. But I'll just enjoy hanging out ;D
Till next time
DBar
-
Glad the procedure went well Bill. Those nurses get you in trouble ;D If you can't drive let me know and I'll come pick you up if you want.
-
Thanks Clint......
-
Hope you have a speedy recovery Bill. Easy on the naughty nurses! >:D
-
You can still work a charcoal fire with one leg can't you? ;D

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA ! Hopefully the same nurse :o or your recovery is going to be rough!
Heck Bill , just get yourself there. Don't worry about bringing a bunch of stuff. If the knee acts up I'm sure well have a can of oil or some shredded sinew to make it smooth :D
-
Bill, I'm glad everything went well with the surgery. Take care of yourself. The cushy office chair in the shop is yours for the weekend. :)
-
Gonna try and make it out in the morning till early afternoon I think. Well as long as we don't get another snow like this.
-
Anyone else that hasn't replied or that I've talked to interested in a tshirt ? Waiting for a preview and cost from two places and will place the order this week, so post your size and quantity or pm me.
Thank you!
Tracy
-
Shane, looking forward to meeting you.
-
I can't believe its only a week and a half away. I better start getting some stuff ready. I need to get a bow or two ready to work on.
Bill, I was serious about the ride offer. Let me know if I need to make a detour to Louisville on my way south.
-
Thanks Clint, really appreciate the offer. I'll let you know, I'm improving just a little bit for the first week. I should know more in another five days or so...I don't think I realizes what a big issue on the recovery was going to be. But I never had my leg cut in half and put back together again either.
-
Hope you're doing well after surgery Bill! Let me know if you need a ride to Dave's and I'll pick you up on the way down Saturday morning. ;)
Tracy
-
Well, I told you it was a scheduling conflict. I looked at my schedule, and I had weekends mixed up. ::) I will be there all three days! Yeee haaaw! ;) :) :D ;D
-
Great news Greg. Glad it worked out.
-
YAY Greg!

I bought 2x4x8's today for making the smoking racks. I'll get them built this week.

Man these 2 blizzards of record book proportions , have gotten me behind in prep work. I'm off work Thurs, Fri and Sat to do some major catch up. But it looks like it will be raining Friday and Saturday. grrr No problem, I work better under pressure, just a lot more adult words being used. haha
Anyhow, I just read through all 18 pages of this thread to refresh my memory about what's going on. It looks like there's going to be about 20 people in and out for the weekend. Here's what I have, meals first, of course.
Friday evening we're having Chili. I'm doing a pot of venison chili and Brian will be bring a pot of wild turkey chili. Anyone one wanting to add sides feel free to do so.
Saturday morning seem a couple folks are cooking a breakfast casserole. I'll add some breakfast stuff to this mix. My hens are starting to lay pretty well right now. Bill mentioned biscuits and gravy in his Dutch ovens. Bill, don't stress your knee. But, if you could bring the supplies, we can easily do them in one of the 2 stoves I have. Would someone step up to be the breakfast chef to coordinate everyone who's cooking this breakfast? What time should we say breakfast will be served?
Saturday evening, we're having a smoked deer hind quarter from Greg and wild boar BBQ from me. I will say this razor back boar has a little strong flavor, but I'm still experiment with it. Side items for this meal are appreciated. I will be head chef for this meal. I'm shooting to eat around 6PM so that means we'll eat at dark-thirty. haha Hey it's better than midnight. :)
Lunch, everyone is own their own, unless someone wants to take charge of cooking something. But, being on our own allows for individuals to be flexible with their work process.
3-D shoot, I propose we do it right after breakfast, before everyone gets working on bows and knapping.
Hide tanning: I thinking all the "instructors" have a plan on what they're going to demonstrate. Fleshing beams, tanning bucket, smoking racks will be set up all day each day. Maybe I should have a bulletin board set up for tanning instructors to announce when they're going to start a particular process. Instructors to post on it an hour in advance. That would keep scheduling loose but organized.
Clay Pigeon shoot, I suggest we start at 1PM, Saturday, because I need to get started with the meat smoking process by 3PM if we have any hopes at all of eating by 6PM. The clay pigeon course will be set up Friday afternoon. So, folks cans practice at anytime. It looks like we'll have at least 6 boxes of pigeons to shoot at. I'm appointing Brian as Range Officer. Could a couple folks volunteer to be assistant Ranger Officers who would take folks out to practice if they wish to do so, so that Brian would not be spending all weekend in field? I know most of you and trust your safety ethics, but having someone to show shooter the range would be good. Speaking of safety, I would like to request that if you're not the shooter or the on-deck shooter, please have the breech of your shotgun open.
Sunset Saturday is 7:49PM. Serious bow building begins at 7PM. All nighters are allowed, but we may have to work around Daniel's cot around 1AM. But, he won't mind. I think he'll sleep better with little, yellow, curly wood shavings falling on his head. :)
Sunday, Breakfast and lunch are left-overs or whatever. Bow building, knapping, skeet and 3-D shooting is a free for all. We'll do it as the mood strikes us.
Let me know if I left out anything.
-
Dave, I won't be there until Saturday morning around 8 and plan on breakfast casserole for Sunday or I guess I could bring it when I get there. Always got the dollar general buffet ;D
Tracy
-
Looks like it is all coming together. Dave, I would like to do the deer hind quarter over an open fire if you have a spot available. I can bring extra firewood for it if need be and my spit equipment.
-
Dave, I can help with the range if you show me what to do. I wish I had more to offer in the cooking category. I guess I make up for it in the eating category. I plan on bringing a deer roast and potatoes in a slow cooker similar to what I brought last year.
-
Tracy, stick with your plan for Sunday casserole.
Greg, an open fire might be a little tricky. I'll see what I can do.
Clint, thanks for volunteering as a range officer. The Venison Roast sounds great.
-
Dave,
Therapy is coming along, good days and bad days. My goal is to make it there early enough Saturday morning to have biscuits and sausage gravy ready @ 9:00 for breakfast. Then hang around the bow shop a while and head back home that evening. It will be just two weeks after surgery and my leg really is weak it wasn't that strong before surgery due to putting up with the knee the last few years.
Sounds like it's going to be a great time, I'll really enjoy seeing the tanning and skins demos.
Till next time,
-
Dave,
One other thing......I will not be able to dig out the clay bird thrower and targets, tooo may steps at this time.
Sorry Bill
-
Bill the most important thing for you do now is to take care of yourself. Breakfast at 9AM works for me. I have a pigeon thrower and a couple others have volunteered to bring one, also. Clay targets are easily obtained. :)
-
I got the stretching, scraping, smoking frame completed today. The next big chore is getting the range ready. The weather is really messing with me on this one. I wanted to have it groomed and set up 2 weeks ago. It won't take 3 hours to do it. But, right now everything is a muddy mess.
Speaking of weather, it doesn't look half bad for next weekend. Friday near 50 degrees with 40% chance of rain. Saturday 30% chance of rain and snow around daylight; warming to 50 degrees. The wind looks light for both days. That's a heck of lot better than the monsoon we had on Saturday last year.
Tomorrow, Saturday, I'm going to a little more straightening in the workshop. AND THEN I'M GOING TO START WORKING ON A BOW!
-
Don't over do it Dave. I'm planning on coming down Friday late afternoon/early evening if that's OK with you. I can help with whatever needs done. I'm glad the weather looks better than last year.
-
Clint Friday is fine for your arrival :)
-
I actually worked on a bow today. It was nice creating little wood curls again. But, it wasn't yeller wood. I got it laid out and looking like a bow. I need to thin the limbs more, then heat straighten the alignment. I'll do that while I'm inducing reflex. My goal is to have it ready to tiller by weekend.
-
What kind of wood is it Dave? I also worked on roughing out a bow today to bring with me.
-
It's the HHB that Blackhawk gave me when I gave him that rotted piece of osage that became the "Bluegrasshole" bow. I've had it for 4 years. It's time it became a bow.
-
It's the HHB that Blackhawk gave me when I gave him that rotted piece of osage that became the "Bluegrasshole" bow. I've had it for 4 years. It's time it became a bow.
Is this the first time you have worked with HHB Dave? If so, you will like it. Its #2 on my list of favorite bow woods. The dust bothers my throat. It seems harder than osage when using a scraper or rasps.
-
Thawed out a gray and red fox for the tanning part this weekend came close 2x today on a whistle pig today slipped in the hole both times. I will get that sucker tomorrow when I get off work. 5 more days to go
-
My grandfather used to tell me that a pair of groundhog shoe strings would wear out 3 or 4 pairs of boots. I have a groundhog hide that's been hanging in the shop for 3 years. I'm going to do my ash solution, hair removal on it and the old deer hides in the shed. I'd like to have the deer in the freezer fleshed out and hair removed ready for the egg tanning. If not, I have a couple hides that need egg tanning anyhow. I saw a cool hide smoking video on YouTube. I got figure out a way to make that happen.
OH, I took a vacation day for Thursday. So, if anyone want to come in a day earlier, I'll be here.
-
Yall have fun this weekend and stay out of trouble. ??? :-\ Wished I could make and some day I plan on it, we always have our first event the 3rd weekend of March so couldn't do it this time. :)
Pappy
-
Pappy, you would like it. Sorta like a mini Classic, only with a small (but growing) group. No official scorecards and just shooting at your leisure. Good food and lots of joking and cutting up. Pretty much stress free fun (unless your are Dave's wife when an exploding target goes off, or Clint after a bad batch of chicken). Love to see you there some day.
-
I am going to be clearing out much of my stave stash. I have to make room in my shed. So, I will have a bunch of shorter (around 50") staves and a few other assorted staves of various lengths with me at Moontree to trade or gift to people. Just a heads up so that everyone saves room to haul them back. Otherwise, Dave will get stuck with them. >:D
-
Bring 'em on, Greg
Guys, I need some material for smoking the deer hides. If you can easily gather some punk wood (the kind that so rotten you can crumble it with your hand) that would be awesome. The other choice is saw dust, not shaving curls, they flame up, but the fine stuff. I probably have enough, but having never done this smokin' thing before, I'm not sure.
-
Dave, I can bring you some punky wood but its pretty damp. Supposed to be dry this week so maybe it will dry out by the weekend. How much do you need?
-
A 5 gallon bucket full should do. we can put it on a pan on the workshop stove to dry it
-
Dave, I found some rotten logs that I can bring for you. They are close the the road so they will be easy to get to. If you pick them up they break in half. I hope they will work for you.
-
This may be a long shot but do any of you guys that are coming to Moontree have a utility trailer for sale? I'm looking for something 12'-16' long.
-
Clint that should, Thanks.
-
Sorry Clint, no trailer here.
-
Ha guys, FYI for smoking hides their is a differences in rotten wood and punk wood. :) Punk wood is what you want. Yall have a good one. :)
Pappy
-
Thanks Pappy for your help.
-
Here's a video to identify punk wood:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBAiRjKzEW4
-
Yins guys have fun n be safe!!! Sorry I can't make it again this year :-\ I'll be thinking of ya wishing i was there with ya
-
I plan on heading up Friday I took a day at work. I'll bring some drinks and snacks for everyone. Sorry I hvent kept up with the thread very much have worked a few weekends lately and my son has been sick quite a bit.
-
I'll be there on Friday also DLH. Probably somewhere around 4:00
Dave, Can you post your address so I can put it in the GPS. I watched the video and I don't have punk wood. I'll try to do some more looking tomorrow
-
565 Stoney Run Rd
Richmond, KY 40475
cell 859-582-2306
Clint don't stress about the punk. Brian is going to gather some and with your idea of looking along the side of the road, I think I found some. I'm going to gather it tomorrow.
Guys, I forgot about grabbing a box of clay pigeons and I don't have time to run back to town. BILL DON"T YOU GO DOWN THOSE STEPS!
I got a lot of work done this Mon, Tues and a Wednesday mornings. The 3-D range has been mowed and targets set back up. A hide smoking stove is almost complete. The hide racks are done and set up. The cooking smoker is back up to the house. The camper is back at the house if someone needs a place to sleep (the leak is patched, I think). The wild boar is marinating. The hides scheduled for hair removal are soaking in the ash bath. The hides to be smoked are re-soaking in the egg tanning solutions. I plan to "break" them tomorrow. And I have a bow that I'm floor tillering. The workshop is pretty straight. So as Pappy would say, "life is good."
-
Sounds like you've been busy Dave ! I can grab a box of clays tonight. Plan on being there saturday morning. Not sure what time cause I got to pick up shirts on the way sorta. Definitely be there before noon. Looking forward to it!
Tracy
-
I'll be there by mid day tomorrow. Bringing some staves, raw furs, a bow that the sinew lifted on, a deer hind quarter, and bringing Clint a bunch of skulls. Dave, I could not find my open fire spit equipment, so the smoker will have to be utilized. I had planned on bringing my bowyers bench, but may not have room. We shall see. Looking forward to it! :)
-
I've got a thrower a box of clays already loaded up. Got my sister billets ready for some one to teach me how to join them and some RW FEATHERS to trae to LW ones.
-
Tracy, WOOHOO!! shirts. I can't wait to see what you came up with. haha Thanks for covering my butt with the clays.
Gutshot, Thanks for the clays, also. It will be good meeting you.
Greg, I think the smoker will make cooking the venison quarter a lot simpler than manning a spit.
The weather is looking pretty darn good weekend. Seems we'll have some rain till about mid-day Friday, then clear skies. Saturday is going to be pushing 70%.
-
Dave,
Sounds like you have been real busy and have got things ready to go. Your a great Host.
Hey Guys,
This has been the most painfull and toughest rehab I have ever been through. My physical therapist thinks it was not very realistic for me to set a goal as aggressive as I did for only being out of surgery a little more than two weeks.
It's killing me to say that I will not make it this year. I'm am really going to miss all the fun and the guys that will be there this year. I'll definitely be thinking about yall. Please take lots of pictures.
A more realistic goal for me is walking up and down the hills at the Classic this year. I hope to see everyone there and at Marshall.
DLH I'll have some cane for you at the Classic, sorry for not getting them to you sooner.
Bill
-
That's a bummer Bill. Better let that knee heal properly. Maybe Pappy will let you cruise around in a golf cart at the Classic.
Dave, I have a box and a half of targets to bring. I got the deer roast thawing and picked up some potatoes and carrots at the store this morning. I think I'm all set to head south tomorrow afternoon. The weather looks way better than last year. We won't even need to fire up the wood stove
Is it still OK if I crash in the guest cabin Dave?
-
If it is not taken, I might crash there as well. Originally I was going to sleep on the couch, but the guest cottage sounds great.
-
Bill, we miss you terribly. But with that said, I think you're making the right choice. Heal quickly, my brother. I'll see you at the Classic.
Clint, I thought you put your reservation in for the cottage in June. haha Sure you're welcome to it.
Greg, sure you can stay in the cottage if you can put up with Clint's snoring. haha And, he gets up really early.
I gathered 2 buckets of punk wood driving down my road this morning. I didn't even make it to the end of the road either. It's great living in the country. :)
Here's what I've been doing most of the day so far. I don't think it's going to dry out to fast on me. haha There's 100 ft of string for that little hide.
-
OK, break's over. Back to work. :)
-
Bill, I will miss seeing you, get well soon! Come fling some arrows when you get a chance. See you guys around noon tomorrow. I have a cooler full of snakes and some raw furs.. I have to remember to throw some stretchers in the truck...
-
Dave, sorry I couldn't make it to help you any. That last snow storm put us behind at work and been playing catch up. Daughter,s been playing makeup volleyball games also. Looking forward to meeting everyone Sat. Was hoping to make it Fri but it's not looking like it's going to happen.
-
Bummer Bill. But, I would rather be able to walk the courses in TN and IN and shoot with you later than you being laid up longer. Good choice. Hope to schedule a time to get shirts tomorrow so I can get there earlier Saturday. I sent the preview to Clint and he gave a nod of approval :D. Weather looks good!
Tracy
-
Joe, do you need me to bring a couple of snake stretching boards? I can help you skin them and tack them down if you want.
Dave, I'm going to try and be there around noon tomorrow.
Does anyone need any more of that band saw blade material that I brought last year? Or any other supplies?
-
Snake stretching boards-- I have one 2x10 board for snake stretching. We can always find "wall space" in the workshop to staple a snake skins if needed. BUT, I get 20% of snake skins stapled to the wall ;) Just Kiddin'. And the stapler has to pull out all the staples. :)
One thing I learned today: you can't "break" a deer hide when it's drizzling rain and 100% humidity for the day. The dang thing will not dry out. haha I did seriously think of building a tarp lean-to, but said the "the hell with it. I'll break it tomorrow."
I did have a "wild fire" in the workshop today. I was drying punk wood on a metal sheet on top of the woodstove. After about 6 hours of this process a few pieces did develop smoke embers. I scooped it away with the shovel.
My list of things to do tomorrow by importance and practically of getting them done (i.e. help arrives):
1. Dry punk wood (I gotta build a fire to do so?
2. Straighten/reflex HHB bow
3. Break deer hide.
4. Clean bathroom
5. Vacuum attic in cottage and clear off the bed.
6. Move boat and tractor out of the shed
7. Straighten up the workshop.
8. Set up the skeet range when Brian and Clint get here.
9. Replace florescent bulbs when Brian and Clint get here.
10. Make smoking soak for deer hide.
11. Stitch up deer hide.
12. Set up lights in the shed.
Most importantly: GREET OLD FRIENDS AND MAKE NEW ONES.
-
Have fun you crazy rednecks, wish I could be there with ya'll! One year Ill make it down.
-
Thats sad to hear Bill. Heal fast! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone tomorrow.

Well, there's the pics I took. We sure had a great time! The weather was good, the food was good, and the people were first class. Dave was an excellent host, as usual. When is Moontree IV?
-
Here's the hen that was in the shop last year, Wilma . Clint offered her a Pringles and then placed it on her back for later.
-
Thanks for posting pics Greg! I only took a few. Had an excellent time as always! I'm gonna request that you smoke some more pig at Moontree IV ;dD I enjoyed meeting everyone new this year and hope to see you all there next year.
Tracy
-
Dave, thank you for hosting this even again. I really enjoy coming down to the moontree farm each spring.
Tracy, thanks for the shirts. I'll wear it with pride.
Greg, thanks for the cooler full of animal parts and thanks for the Kentucky round steak sandwich.
Joe, thanks for the skins. Glad I could help you skin them.
The food was excellent again this year. Thanks everyone for putting it all together. It was nice to meet some new people interested in primitive archery. You guys fit right in with our little group. Hope you all can make it back next year.

Had a great time at moon tree. Already planning on coming back next year. Thanks to every one of you guys, made me feel real welcome. Loved hearing all the stories, shooting bows watching and learning some new stuff. Thanks Dave you did a great job putting everything together for your event. See every body next year.
-
Greg, you left your "scorched bow" in the workshop. Is that a hint that your expecting me to finish it for you.
Guys, I had a great time. It was so good ya'll again. It was a pleasure meeting the new folks. Thanks so much to all the photographers who captured the moment.
-
Glad you caught me busy Clint! I worked hard all weekend.
-
Looks like a great time for sure. :)
Pappy
-
Pappy, it sure was a great time, but just a warm up for the Classic. I'll see you soon.
-
I haven't had a chance to post my pics, but it was great seeing everyone and meeting the new guys, Marcus, Paul and Joe... thats the only names I remember and I probably got those wrong... hell to get old..
Thanks Clint for helping me skin those stinking snakes! I put the carcasses out in front of a trailcam along with the otter, beaver and coon trimmings.. well, the buzzards scarfed up the trimmings and snake guts, and the possums ate the snake meat...
Thanks Dave again for being such a great host, ya'll gonna have to start eating during working hours... lol
-
Dave, the other Joe here. I want to thank you for your hospitality, and sharing your tv for the ball game. This was the first primative event I've been to and I can say it won't be my last. I was kinda lost though, only being able to spend one day and so much going on that I couldn't take advantage of the wealth of knowledge that was there. ( I should have called in to work and came Fri. also ) I really needed some extra eyes on my bow on the tillering tree and got it from Clint and Tracy. Great meeting everyone else to, my hats off to all of you guys for pitching in to help Dave pull this off. Looking forward to the next one. Had a great time. Joe.
-
Balsatech, I'm glad you got the help you needed. I felt a little bad about leaving you to watch the Cats play. But, I knew you'd be in capable hands. And, I really needed the distraction to unclutter my mind. It was great meeting you.
-
Gutshot, pleasure meeting you and Marcus ! Good luck with your splice and arrows. Going to have to get together some time over the summer.
Balsatech , you made a real nice sage bow that will do what you want it to do
Real nice meeting Paul , Jack, and Trisha for the shoot around.
-
Boy, that Jack was a trooper wasn't he. Enjoyed shooting with him and his companions. It was a pleasure meeting all the new people, although I cant remember their names ::)
-
Also, would like to thank wapiti1997 for his fleshing tutorial and the help with the beaver pelts. I am going to be putting those lessons to use soon. Clint, thanks for the stave and the constant entertainment. You were more than welcome to the bologna sandwich, one of my specialties (my wife taught me).
-
Looks and sounds like I missed good one. I think I missed meeting the new people as much as anything, I really enjoy meeting people with the same interests.
Greg,
Tracy tells me he has a goodie for me. Thanks! Let me know what you need in trade.
Till next time
DBar

I wanna thank everyone involved for a great weekend. It was so refreshing to be around like minded people. You guys are the most generous bunch of rednecks I've ever met. I only wish I coulda spent more time with Tracy..your one patient dude....btw a couple of obsidian flakes made there way into my bucket somehow ...I hope were allowed to come back next year!

Bill your were missed. I bet I heard, "I miss Bill," being said at least 20 times. But, we were all glad that you were at home taking care of yourself. See ya at the Classic, my friend.
mbt, I'm glad you enjoyed the crazy bunch of rednecks. I think you all fit right in. :)
-
Yeah, you missed a good one Bill. The weather was good and everyone had a great time and ate like kings. You were missed. You don't owe me nothing on the goodie. Hope to see you at the Classic.

Dave I just want to thank you for your hospitality and everyone there - Clint, Tracy, and i wish i could remember all the names. We had a fantastic time and learned so much! I also want to thank Clint for the osage and assistance. Tracy for the arrowhead. Jack, Trisha and myself loved the shoot around. We are all hooked. There is already a pile of Osage shavings in the the floor, and Jack has everything laid out to make a display arrow with the arrowhead. His Moms funeral was yesterday. Being able to get his mind away from his loss helped so much with his anxiety.
We cant wait for another get together.
Thanks so much!!

I read Clint's name way too often the last few pages, cant believe you suckers bought into his BS!
Sounds like another winner Dave!

I wish we had more time to knap Marcus! Maybe we can sit down and knap over the summer on a free weekend if there is such a thing with kids and all.
Stray dog it was good meeting you and Jack and Trisha. Really liked the quietness of your bow .

Tracy

Yeah I'm hoping. :D I finished and wrapped the grip. Need to upload a picture of it when I can.
-
Straydog, it was my pleasure. You, Jack and Trish are welcome to come and shoot anytime.
Shane, let's see them pictures. :)

I did another heat correction on the HHB yesterday. The string is now dead center. I'm going to floor tiller it, heat in some reflex and maybe slightly flipped tips. THEN I'm bring it to the Classic and compete in the Ultimate Bow Challenge. Anyone wanting to join me in this challenge?
-
I'll shoot a round with you Dave.
-
Heck yeah. I'm in.

Did anyone pick up a rubber type sanding block by mistake. I couldn't find mine today. It's probably hiding in a corner somewhere, but just thought I'd ask.
On the subject of misplaced items: some far I've found a tray of target and bone points, and a gray and black fleece jacket.

I left a metal black rubber coated waterbottle.
Also finally posted pictures of the hickory bow. Went on vacation and got distracted with life but finally got around to it.

It was by the bandsaw Sunday Shane.
Not sure about the plastic tool tray with all the points in it Dave.

Don't feel bad, Greg S and Ozzy left stuff there last year and got them back this year. I'm going to leave stuff intentionally so I have an excuse to go back each year >:D
-
Tracy, I don't think you left anything this year. Maybe you should send me something and we'll pretend you left it. :)
-
I think I left some explosives in the back field >:D

Tracy, breaking some rocks this summer sounds like fun. It seems like I never have time to sit with you in pit during Moon Tree. Devoting a day to just breaking rocks would be great. I tried to work some spalls about a week ago. I made plenty of gravel. haha But, I saw improvement, so that's good.
