very nice Keenan.you know the suspence is killing me brother.that is a wicked looking stave.keep up the good work.
-
That looks like a fun one. Is that a yew tree growing in the background there? You should get it cut and split so it can start seasoning. >:D
-
I guess it's ok... :)
-
So you need my address right? :D
-
Keenan you sure have an eye for those character staves. I will find one of those dreamy wavy yew trees one of these days. That looks like a beauty.
-
;D ;D
Glad you like it Steve ;)
Weylin that gave me an idea. Do you think they will allow a yew Christmass tree. You are allowed five Christmass tree permits per family. I could see the officers face already when I have a Christmass tree permit wrapped around a pole in the back of the truck >:D
Bryce we will have to get out for a gathering sometime
Roy,,,Roy,,, Roy ::)
Carson, thank yew ;D
-
i can't stop looking at it.yew are right, that is a roller coaster.you must have alot of patients.you are the man Keenan.
-
Very nice, it makes me a little seasick:)
-
Awesome!
-
Beautiful!!!!
-
Alright man, that sounds good:) I'll bring a bow or 2 :)
-
NICE ! I can't wait for the USPS Man to pull up to the house ;). Bob
-
Sweet...that'll be an easy one fir yew ;)
-
Fastastic looking piece of wood there keenan. Looking forward to seeing this one bend also.
-
That looks real nice Keenan. I like the way you and some of the others on here can handle the wavy, knarly pieces of wood and come out with a beautiful, functional bow. I'm watching and hopefully learning cause I have some staves like that begging to become bows
one day. ;D
Greg
-
Yeah, nice bit of Yew. Gotta love the swoops.
Del
-
Roller coaster for sure :o What is your method of tillering such limbs? I usually use my thumb and index finger and run it down the limb feeling for a constant limb taper. I know this is going to be a nice one! :D
-Cody
-
... I usually use my thumb and index finger and run it down the limb feeling for a constant limb taper
Amen to that... all the measurements with vernier calipers can't beat your finger and thumb. (Cant pick your nose with verniers either ::))
Del

Yep that is the best method.
Yep Del them verniers can really hurt up the nose, :o
Here is a little clip working this bow!

Great video sir! Thank you for sharing that :) That stave is turning out real nice!
-
Nice flick ole boy...
-
good video Keenan.i was out on my stavemaster today chasing a ring on a osage stave.i am still loving the stavemaster.it really shines on the fine detail sanding.it's nice to be able to hold the wood in any position.being short or vertically challenged, other shave horses are just to long and i can't get enough pressure to hold the stave.i just have to lay one foot on the pedal of the stavemaster and the wood is held firmly.it helps my back out a bunch.thanks brother.
-
Looks great Keenan. 8)
-
Here in the midwest out snake bows go back and forth, NOT up and down. You left coasters are just strange.
I like the image of hauling out Christmas trees that look like yew staves with a tuft of branches at the end.
-
Great video Keenan. Thats pretty much how I work character staves. Thats going to be a very nice bow I can tell now!!
-
Looking good, Keenan. Loved your plug for the stavemaster there. ;D It's the truth though. I was just helping a new bowyer today on his first bow and it is a wild and crazy yew stave. He had it clamped down to the table for a bit to do some rasping and sure enough he crushed a little dent into one of the protruding lumps. I put him back on the stavemaster after that.
-
Thanks guys, didn't want to make a commercial but did feel it necessary to point out that as soft as yew is you need to be a little more cautious with the back and sides and how you clamp or hold when scraping
-
I was just teasing you a little. :P I didn't think you were making a commercial. The stave master is really good for that issue, and many others. My only complaint with my stavemaster is that sometimes I fall asleep in it while I'm deciding what to do next on my bow.
-
All hail king Keenan upon his yew throne .....Long live the king ;D
Nice teaser..and I'm sure it helps some folks as well, and that's applicable to all woods and bows...when someone shows me a bow the first thing I do is run my greasy fingers across it checking for tiller by guaging its thickness and side to side thickness...and most times you can tell if its tillered right by that test alone.
-
Here is an update. After weeks of delicate tillering and tedious sanding this one has some finish on her now

Wow dude you really know how to get the beauty out of a piece of yew. That is one nice looking stick!!!!

Very beautiful piece of wood there Keenan! True artisan work.
-
I GUESS IT'S OK:) >:D

I don't think a bow can get any prettier than that. So simple yet there is so much there to stare and drool at. I bet you can really get lost in a stave like that. Can't wait for the rest of the pics!

Pappy
-
Great vid Kennan.Good point about rounding corners etc. as you tiller.Stunning bow.Nice shop.
-
Keenan: What are you using for a finish? It doesn't have the "yellowing." Your sapwood is so pearly white. Beautiful, just beautiful. I'm helping (Chamookman) Carmichael with his.
-
Great lookin bow Keenan! Can't wait to see the rest ;) I was wondering the same thing Matt was. I used my Ol stand by spar urathane on that yew of mine. Did you use polycrylic?

Del

Steve, glad you like her.
Bob. You will do fine, Just go slow and very methotical following the back. You have a great mentor at your side.
Badly, That is cool a lumpy bumpy posting. >:D
-
Thanks Keenan ;) I'll have to use that next time if I'm lucky enough to get my hands on some more yew ;)
-
Very nice Keenan, that wood looks a lot like bearded yew with all the pins in it, wood turners like the pins for character.
VMB
-
Looking great so far Keenan. How often does yew exhibit that type of roller coaster side view profile. That looks like so much fun to tiller!
-
INCREDIBLE! NICE JOB!
-
Thanks Guys.
Cody What I've noticed is it tends to be in the larger and older trees that are in good snow elevation. I think what happens is the small branches try to start growing and the snow pack and ice breaks them of each year when they are small twigs. You will often see 6-8 feet of branchless trunk But not always the case I have cut some that was smooth and consistant and another 100 feet away that was roller a coaster surface
-
An amazing piece of work Keenan. You've outdone yourself again. I'm looking forward to the hero shot.
-
Thank you Scott
Thank you Gordon, I will get a full draw shot when she's done but no more hero shots. Though I love and support the BOM contest and I am greatfull for having had the honors a couple times. I decided last year, it's time to get off the stage. ;) :)

Very Very nice Keenan. :)

Keenan your bows have the most beautiful even arc. That is an amazing bow.

Beautiful bend indeed. I hope I get to see that in person at COBG.

You did a nice job of working around those pin knots. That can be tricky work especially when they are as numerous as with your bow.
-
Steve, I'll let you do the final count. There are multiple pins in each cluster and about 14 small clusters.
Thank you Greg
Thank you Matt
Thank you Weylin

Thank you Carson, Sorry my friend, this one ships out in the morning for her new home in Ohio, so she won't be at the COBG
Thank you Gordon
-
That truly is a thing of beauty ;)
-
Boy what a dandy unique bow.All those pin knots had to be time consuming.Full draw lines are the best they can be.
-
That's a beauty :)
-
That is all good 8)
Beautiful all round.
-
Beautiful bow Kennan, very nice work on that one. :)
Pappy
-
That is some amazing work! I always enjoy seeing your bows and this is one of my favorites for sure.
-
Thanks again everyone,
Even though it was challenging this was a very fun build as it was made specifically for a guy with a great heart! I am continually impressed with the generosity of so many great people on this site. From rendezvous gatherings to trades done on the forum people are always stepping up to the plate to help any who need. One of those that top the list is Steve AKA (Seabass) I have seen him go out of his way to find something for total strangers and give expecting nothing in return. I have heard of many speaking the same about him as well.
As some of you may have already figured out from the hints this one is for SEABASS. You certainly deserve it my friend
-
I'll second that Keenan. Seabass is as good as they come.
-
thank you for all the nice words guys.there are plenty of giving people on this site.i usually give things to people that i have seen being nice to others.one example is during the bow trade some people didn't recieve a bow.two people that i know of,stepped up to the plate and made bows for those that didn't recieve one.that was very generous of them,so i made them something for being so kind to others.i think that there is many generous people on here.this is what draws me here, the people.thank you all,you are a great bunch of folks.
-
That's awesome Keenan. Way to help out karma. Great job on that one as usual. Congrats Steve.
-
That's a kingly gift right there. Way to rack up the good karma, Steve. Keenan, you're not such a slouch in the generosity department yourself. ;)
-
That turned out great! Man what a gift!! Steve I hope you bring it down to twin oaks sometime ;) sure would like to see it in person :)
-
you will see it soon Will.
-
Here are some more pics to hold you over till that gets there! PS. That is an elk tooth on the handle wrap!

Awesome job and gesture. Steve is a class act for sure. You did make it only 48" long didn't you? So the bottom limb will not drag in the ground???
-
LOL that funny Charlie, We are actually about the same higth. I think he may have me by an inch or so. So if I can shhot it I know he can,,,LOL

-
FABULICIOUS!!!!!!!
-
I think you stole that handle design from me, shame on you ;)
-
Dwardo, That was good! ;D
Got me thinking about how we learn from each other and how awesome it is to be able to share different ways of doing things. I had to do some serious digging to see how this design came about and was enlightening to see the progression. Here were some of the first ventures into the developing of that wrap.

-
That was Gems buck horn under the wrap on that one Steve. Looks great but is a real pain to do. :o
-
it looks real cool.i think i saw that one on you website.it may be tough to do,but it looks great.
-
Weylin that gave me an idea. Do you think they will allow a yew Christmass tree. You are allowed five Christmass tree permits per family. I could see the officers face already when I have a Christmass tree permit wrapped around a pole in the back of the truck >:D
im curently making a bow from a christmas tree we had last year! and sadly it wasen't yew :-[ it's some kind of conifer but i think if it works it will have some good character in it.
-
great looking bow. i love these bows with plenty of character. i cant wait for my stash of yew to season. only a year to wait. :(
-
My God..... I think this is the most beautifull bow I have ever saw. I would give my life for this. Not enough words to say...
Keenan, may I post an article on my website about you and this bow? I would like to show to people what is realy mastercraft?
-
Druid, You have no idea how humbling that is to hear coming from a guy who builds bows that I just droll over. Every one of your bows are works of art my friend. I think your friends have seen some of the best Craftsmanship through your work. I would be honered to have you share the bow on your site.
