Title: TEASE!!! Cherry Bark Backed Osage Recurve
Post by: Pat B on July 15, 2008, 06:59:28 pm
This is my newest bow. I've been busy lately. ;D This one and the yew bow I recently posted will be my hunting bows this fall. I'm still in the process of adding a Tru-Oil finish to this bow so this is all you guys get to see for now.  >:D  I will tell you it is osage  8) with bark backing  8) .   Pat

Well, I'll have more pics tomorrow but I will give you guys some stats. She is 60"t/t, 1 3/8" wide rectangular cross section limbs from the bows center out 18" on each limb then a taper to 1/2" static recurve tips(about 6" long). I was gonna have her bend through the handle but instead there is a hint of bending at my full draw of 26". I padded the handle area with shoe leather, back and belly and have that wrapped with hemp cord.
Now for the bark backing. David was right, It is cherry bark from Joe Klink in Beaverton, OR.  I opted not to remove the beautiful lichens and mosses that adorned the bark. I hope this will last because, in it own way, is as beautiful as the coppery bark under it. Tip overlays are moose antler. I have 4 coats of Tru-Oil on her now and will probably add a few more. Finally I will give the bow a quick spray of satin poly to cut the shine of the Tru-Oil. I haven't done a final weight check but I am guessing around 50#@26".
When I first shot her I was very disappointed in the cast and the amount of hand shock. I reduced the tips quite a bit and heat treated the belly and let her sit for a few days before stressing. After that she was spitting out my 600+gr cane and sourwood arrows with a slight thump in hand. I could take more physical weight from the tips but I think she is done. She did take some set but not excessive.    Thats about it for now.     Pat

By the way....the tree that this bow came from was cut May 8, 2008. This is the belly split from the stave I bought at Hickory and another of its sisters was going to be a bow for Herb Reynolds. I will still make that bow and donate it to CTA in Herb's honor next year at Hickory.    Pat

Here are a few more pics. I will try to get a full draw this evening or tomorrow.   The recurves were bent with dry heat and a bit of olive oil(heat gun). I still have to seal the handle wrap and add a few more coats of Tru-oil.
Again, the lichens, etc on the bark was too beautiful to scrape off so I just covered it with Tru-Oil. I hope they will last but if not the coppery bark underneath will be beautiful also.    Enjoy!     Pat

Alan, I always said I way a straight bow kinda guy buy these short recurves do have a beautiful profile and allure. To me, they are more difficult to shoot. It will take me a while to get good enough with this one to hunt with it. The yew bow I posted recently, on the other hand, shot where I was looking from the start and is very consistent.
You can shoot her at the camp-o-rama. ;)   Pat

Man you've been busy lately Pat, The long nap ya had must have energized you ;D

The bow looks great I also like the bark as it is, curious to see if it stays the way it is or if the lichens will shed.

Nice looking bow Pat. I hope it fills the freezer for you. One question; did you say that the osage was cut just a little over 2 months ago? Did you hot box the staves? I only ask because I've experimented with different drying methods/times for osage and don't believe that the traditional drying times are necessary and can be safely shortened. On  the flipside, I have osage staves from 27 years ago to compare with newer ones.

Thanks Tracy

Tracy, Yes, this stave was cut 5/5/08. I didn't use any artificial drying methods but I did heat treat the belly which definitely has a drying effect. Even though this bow and the stave before hand felt dry it seems to be a bit mushy now that it is a bow. After unbracing it has taken a set but will recover over the next hour. I think after it is a year or more old that will change...as it cures more. I am a firm believer in using well cured wood for bows. I have and will continue to use dry, unseasoned(uncured) wood for comparisons but think a well seasoned stave will produce better bow in the end. 27 year old osage should be about perfect! ;)   Pat

wow, it came out beautiful.  love the tiller.

did the belly give you any problems when you put in the recurves?  the reason i'm asking is, because the signature bow cracked on the belly when i tried to flip the tips.  i wonder if i was too impatient.
Title: Re: TEASE!!! Cherry Bark Backed Osage Recurve
Post by: Pat B on July 17, 2008, 05:32:17 pm
Knowing you, I'd say you are too impatient but thats another matter all together.  ;) ::)
Yes, the outside of the curves(belly) did crack a bit but only superficial. I reduce the area to be bent to one ring on the belly side also so I get a good bend but leave enough wood that can and usually is removed, removing the cracks with it. I add super glue to the crack for insurance.  When I heat wood to bend I wait until the weight of the bow begins to pull the heated area then I pull it down slowly until I get to the caul. I also make slight corrections to alignment. More is always needed later too.

That's some good looking stuff man!!!

I wish I had the guts to leave the lichen on; that purple skin looks soooo good against yellow Osage!

I'm so stoked to see some folks building bows with cherry bark!  If you want some more, you know where to get it!

Awesome bow!!!!

Joe, I will do another with the lichens removed but this looked so cool I had to try it. It may peel off this weekend at the powder creek shoot but I had to try. 8) Thanks for the bark. I have been contemplating a few other projects. You might get a PM from me soon. ;)
  Thanks Rick and Don. ;)

Thanks Frank.
I came to the conclusion this weekend that even though she feels dry, she is not ready for the stresses on being strung for a few hours at a time. I was at the Powder Creek shoot this weekend and yesterday I shot 20 3D targets with Tina, Steve(Hillbilly) and Cody Parker and Barry McCall and his daughter Emily. After the round, when I unbraced her she had taken a bit of set. After relaxing for a few hours she was back almost where she started. I decided to set her aside and let her "cure" for a while more. I may or may not hunt with this bow this fall. We'll just have to see. After all, the tree she came from was cut May 8, 2008.     Pat

Hows life in Germany these days?       Pat

i finally got back to shooting a bit.  my wife lets me go to one tournament a month (if i'm good the rest of the time  ;D)  i basically have to relearn everything.  my shooting is worse then last year at the classic (if that's even possible) but it's gradually coming back, thanks to "two deer" who's my permanent companion nowadays, along with the signature bow.  signature has developed a bad habit.  it vibrates very unpleasantly with light arrows.  haven't found a cure yet, other than shooting heavy arrows  ;D

sorry, didn't mean to hijack your thread, but since you asked.... >:D
