I am looking for new ideas for points you can make yourself. I have a few but am looking for inspiration ???

man i have seen a bunch of ppl post ideas of homemade points on here.

Nugget, you got empty .38 cal cartridge cases. The primer hole can hold a sharp nail or turn it around, the head of a nail to make it stronger and heavier. You also got rectangle, .06 to .090 thick about 3/8 wide by about 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch long, steel saw blades you can cut and slot the shaft. These are absolutely devastating on small game. Length will determine weight. That is an LJ (Kenneth G.) innovation. I've seen copper and steel wire wrapped around the shaft and CA'ed on. There is a whole lot more out there.

Simple cartridge blunts work best for me. Still get stuck in the dirt every once in a while, but they can't get dull and easily replaced. They also tear those evil Cocacola cans to shreds when they charge you ;).

i hate them dang things. nothing more than a nuisance. and you cant turn you back on them either or theyll jump you. yup i try and shoot every one of them cola cans when i see them. ;D

I hate those rampaging stumps. You got to shoot to kill when you draw down on them.
I have some scrap stuff laying around i have been playing around with. Will try and post if they work out

Those sure stick in a target well. I think I remember watching Kenneth nearly get a hernia pulling them suckers out! ;D

I think I saw one Pat had at Hickory. I will try them along with the nail and brazing rod tip.

The arrows Little John shows have obvious pointed tips. I used them squared off and hit a squirrel with one. Looked like a frag grenade went off in his head. Lucky shot.

Kenneth how do your points work for stump shooting?

David, nice to talk to you and really was nice to meet and shoot with you in Tenn. , yea they work just like a field point. They will break if you hit a rock. I made it thru the classic with an intact dozen but now have broken two of them. No falt of the points, was shooting in strong wind and the arrow was flying crooked when it went into a hay bale. If you look close, two of my arrows have serrated saw teeth , square point blunts. Should work well on small game and shoot and stick into a hay bale like a field point. Kenneth

Kenneth, what was the mettle you used for those? Yep, had a blast meeting you at the Classic. You guys were a blast to go out shooting the rounds with. We will have to do that again next year! I dont think I've had that much fun in a long time.

David, I used a giant hack saw blade from a machine shop and cut off pieces about 11/32" each with a welders chop saw. I am out of that material, but have some circular saw blades from a lumber saw mill that I can cut straps about 2" wide and then still cut the 11/32" point blanks with the chop saw. Grind to a point and grind a notch so the sinue wrap is below the arrow surface so it doesn't get sanded off with use. Maybe I can get some more made up before too long and share a few with you. Which do you like better, the nails with soddered cone shaped tips or the sheet metal ones that you slot into the shaft?
Thanks for posting the examples, one of these days I'll have some cane arrows of my own hopefully. ;)

Greg, One type is for cane arrows(nail with brass cone) and the other for hardwood shoots or dowel type arrows. Pat

Yep Pat is exzactly right. I love shooting cane arrows but then there is nothing like a matched set of P.O.C. for consistant shooting. So Just depends on what kind of arrows you are making. Kenneth

Some random points i have tried that all work fine even if they don't look to good include:
Bellamite fossils, but they are too brittle and snap.
Tubing hammered to poinst.
Nutters
Nails in the end,
all work ok but they dont look good.

I have some hardware that came from my work ( that I was just layed off from :( ) I am going to try some of it. It consists of small ball joints, 3\8 headed self tapping screws, copper tubing , and some flat stock of various metals and thicknesses.
Since I have plenty of time before school starts I will try some of it all . Will post as I suceed or fail.
P.S. Anybody know of any good jobs available??????????? ;D

i have an idea i have been wanting to try. Im sure some else has done it.
Take a very straight antler tine and cut off the pointed end then superglue it on the shaft and bind with sinew

just seen this thread if you are using bam boo you can use duplex nails. What you do is grind the first head to a point and then drill the right size hole in the bam boo to get the pith out leave the nail as long as you want the longer it is the haver the point. you also can braze brass on and grind to a point for a heaver point. I have only used this on bam boo as it has a hollow center. Tom

Thanks Cromm. I only made the middle one , I used the other two as a reference to start making my own horn points. I did a tutorial on these points if you want to read it.

Anyone done those horn points out of something like Ipe or some other hard wood? I think a thick dowell put in a drill might work! But I do like the looks of that horn!!! ;D

Would horn points or wood points have adequate weight without making them longer or adding something else for weight in the end of the arrow? They seem like they might be lite to me, but they look really good.

Greg ,the biggest point ,the one I made in the photos above weighs 41 grains .The white one weighs 20 grains ,and the smallest point, the black point weighs 15 grains.
But they still shoot good . You just have to plan around them a bit. I put them in canes ,big end of the cane forward . And make either just a tad longer than heaver pointed shafts or a little under spined . They seem to do pretty good on shafts with more taper toward the nock end . You know the canes you might otherwise cull ,because the nock end is to small without building it up with a tailshaft type nock.
