Here is my latest creation. It's 62" ntn and 45#@26". The wood is Pacific yew that I harvested in the Oregon Cascades. I traded for the sturgeon skins with a friend. This bow is backed with the light colored underbelly of the fish. I stained the back of the bow black before I glued the skin down. This helped to provide more contrast in the color. I'm happy with how that turned out. The transition painting is done with acrylic. I just didn't like the transition between the skin and the wood no matter how well I cleaned it up so I decided to fancy it up a little. The tip overlays are horn and the handle wrap is leather with calf lace with a Strunk style lacing pattern. The feather is from a crow (not a raven!). The finish is Tru-oil and the string is fastflight with otter fur silencers.
I've been wanting a lighter weight bow to give me a break from my elk hunting bows. It gets old cranking those things back every time I want to shoot at the range. I'm very pleased with how this bow shoots, it's a lot of fun and my accuracy is much better with the lighter weight. It's my new go-to bow. :)

That is an outstanding bow. Yew selfbows all dressed up are so beautiful. If it was mine, however, I'd get the fades working a bit more. It hasn't taken much set mid-limb, but the fades aren't doing much work.
-
Man that thing is a beauty!
Nice curves and skins

A goodlooking piece for sure. How about a smile? ;) Markus

Always enjoy seeing your bows. Well done.

Wow just a wonderful looking bow.

Beautiful finish work! I love the look of the sturgeon skin. It reminds me of the starry sky before the dawn of a big hunt.

Very nice and clean yet again Waylin. Gotta love the PNW bows man. You boys up over there sure know how to make em. Love it.
-
Such attention to detail! I always enjoy looking at your bows.
-
Wow. Everything about that bow shouts top shelf. Those skins are stunning too. I like the little dots you put on the side. Nice touch. Danny
-
Take this the right way, please, but sometimes I wish I were NOT 6'2". I could never get away with that at 62". I could never get away with that without deflexing a bit, and I could never get away with nice big recurves like that, which I prefer, on a bow that long. Add all that to the fact that I see sooooo many little elms, maples, mulberry branches, sycamore branches, yellow locust branches, and a MILLION plums and serviceberries that are ALMOST long enough to cut.
That is a beautiful bow.
-
Wow, you slayed this one!
Gabe
-
Excellent work! Looks like a bow of the month winner to me :)
-
I always look forward to seeing your work posted Weylin. There is nothing about this one not to love. It is so different from the materials that I have access to, and you put it together perfectly. Your finishing work is awesome. When it's time to drag out the big elk bows again, and it looks like you will be neglecting that one, you could send it down to Alabama and I will find a use for it! ::) :)
-
Very nice work, difficult piece to tiller I bet. :)
-
Another beauty Weyin. Top notch a always.
-
Killer recurve, Weylin. Looks even better in person. Shoots alright too ;)
-
Weylin you really out did yourself on this one!certainly one of the finest bows I've ever seen posted on here!a real master piece of art and function.
-
God that's beautiful!
-
Nice bow, youŽll get my vote. Only some minus points from the funny and unnecessary peg inserted as arrow self.
-
errrrrr..... wow
Like wot they all said!
You don't have to be a brain sturgeon to see that's beautiful ::)
Del
-
dude... that bow is beautiful...
-
Beautiful. What is the edging around the backing. Did you do that by hand?
-
Thank you everyone for the kind words! :D
Tillstave, the edging is done with acrylic paint by hand. I felt like this bow needed a little something between the skin and the bow. The transition didn't look quite right without it.
-
Gorgeous bow!
-
Absolutely beautiful!
-
Pure beauty! That is a work of art!
-
What a beauty of a bow, but I think I would have named it " Starfall" since it isn't a raven feather anyway. One day I gotta get me a piece of yes but you don't see it growing in Missouri lol.
-
Fantastic work. One day i hope to make something half as good :o
-
Congratulations on Backed Bow of the Month. That bow is one of the classiest bows I have ever seen. Well deserved and a top candidate for Backed Bow of the Year 12 months from now
